Chapter 189 - Chapter 189: A Moment of Warmth

The tranquil spring water shimmered under the soft light. Xiao Yan trailed his fingers through the cool liquid, sending ripples across the surface, before lying back comfortably on the broad lotus leaf.

"How do you find living here?" he asked casually, eyes half-lidded.

Medusa, seated beside him, glanced at his relaxed form. A faint, almost imperceptible fluctuation passed through her amethyst eyes.

"Acceptable," she replied, her voice cool as always. "The energy here is dense, beneficial for cultivation. Occasionally, I challenge the Trial Tower."

But in her heart, she added silently: Here, I have encountered many things I never had before. Conversation. Companionship. Even… concern. Most importantly, a certain peace she had never known.

"Good. If you like it, stay. There will always be a place for you here," Xiao Yan said, his tone carrying a weight of unspoken promise.

They talked idly after that. Xiao Yan described the workings of the Inner Academy, while Medusa, prompted by the serene atmosphere, shared fragments of her past—cold battles, lonely vigils, the heavy mantle of protecting her tribe. The conversation was quiet, effortless, wrapping them in a rare, gentle warmth.

Lulled by the peace, Xiao Yan's consciousness gradually drifted into sleep.

Noticing his even breathing, Medusa turned. In slumber, his sharp, often teasing features softened into an unguarded tranquility.

A tender light, one she herself did not recognize, gentled her gaze. She waved a hand subtly, and the ambient temperature adjusted perfectly for rest.

Her mind wandered. She had believed her destiny was carved from ice and solitude, until this infuriating, unpredictable man had crashed into her world. He brought color, annoying concern, and a confusing sense of belonging. At times, it felt like a fragile dream—something she scarcely dared to believe.

Her eyes lingered on his face. Then, as if drawn by a ghost, her slender, jade-like finger lifted, hovering just inches from his cheek.

Her heart hammered against her ribs, a silent war raging within. Pride warred with a yearning she refused to name. Her finger remained suspended, trembling slightly.

'Don't hesitate. Hesitation breeds eternal regret.' Unbeknownst to her, from the balcony of her distant palace, Yun Yun watched with an 'auntie's smile,' mentally urging her on. The irony that she had once been the same was lost in the moment.

Finally, throwing caution to the wind, Medusa's fingertip lightly brushed his skin.

Warmth. A delicate, living warmth transmitted from that single point of contact, shooting straight to her core and making it clench. Her eyes widened slightly, captivated by the simple, profound sensation.

Just then, the sleeping Xiao Yan shifted his head a fraction.

Medusa snatched her hand back as if scalded, her regal composure shattered into nervous alarm. She watched him, barely breathing, fearing discovery.

Seeing him settle again, she exhaled softly. The phantom feeling on her fingertip remained, and a blush, faint as dawn, crept up her neck. She turned away, striving to calm the storm in her chest.

The moment she looked away, the ghost of a smile touched Xiao Yan's sleeping lips, vanishing as quickly as it appeared.

Time flowed like the quiet spring. When Xiao Yan's eyelids eventually fluttered, Medusa quickly straightened, assuming a perfect meditation pose, her expression once again a mask of cool detachment.

Xiao Yan awoke, stretched with a series of satisfying pops, and smiled at her. "How long was I out?"

"Two hours, perhaps. I was in deep cultivation," Medusa replied without looking at him, her tone meticulously even.

"That long? I feel completely refreshed." He sat up, grinning. "Thanks, Queen Medusa. The temperature was perfect. I slept wonderfully."

"Consider it the price for your future demise by a thousand cuts," she snorted, turning her face further away, a complex gloom in her eyes. Sharing a man… her pride as a queen still revolted at the thought. It was the chains that kept her heart locked.

"I am a man of profound and singular devotion," Xiao Yan declared, standing up.

"Devotion?" Medusa finally looked at him, her gaze scathing. "Shall I list the objects of your 'devotion,' one by one? Have you added any new young misses from the academy to your collection?"

"But of course," Xiao Yan's grin turned roguish. "My devotion is eternally pledged to all peerless beauties capable of toppling kingdoms and cities."

Medusa's eyes flashed with purple light. "Shameless scoundrel!" Her foot lashed out in a swift kick.

"A queen should be graceful!" Xiao Yan laughed, catching her ankle. Before she could react, he gave her instep a quick, deliberate rub before releasing it and stepping back, his figure already beginning to blur. "Quite smooth!"

He vanished entirely, leaving only his teasing laughter hanging in the air.

Medusa stood frozen, the sensation on her ankle burning. After a long moment, she stomped lightly on the water's surface.

"You absolute… rogue!" she whispered fiercely. But as the curse left her lips, a smile—brilliant, unstoppable, enough to put all blossoms to shame—broke through her icy facade, transforming her utterly.

Reappearing in the forest of the Inner Academy, Xiao Yan's mood was exceedingly bright. The Earth Core Body Tempering Liquid was secured, along with a haul of herbs. Refining a sixth-grade pill here would cause too big a stir; he'd need a quieter place.

'Next time, I'll bring that human-shaped treasure detector along,' he thought with an inward chuckle, already planning his next resource-gathering trip with Zi Yan.

Satisfied, he shot into the air, flying unrestrained back towards the residential quarters—one of the perks of the Inner Academy, no flight restrictions.

He landed lightly in the courtyard of his own pavilion.

"Tiger Girl," he called out, looking around. "Where's Xun'er?"
