Chapter 27 - Whispers Beyond the Silent Forest

In a place with no known boundaries, whose distance from the world could not be measured, a single throne rose amid a quiet void.

The figure seated upon it did not fully appear; half of his body was shrouded in shadow, while the other half reclined lazily on the throne's arm, as if existence itself did not deserve his full attention.

Long silver hair fell untamed, and he wore dark purple Hanfu-style robes, wide and elegant, carrying an ancient dignity that did not belong to this era.

A smug smile played on his lips, a smile of someone who knows more than they should.

He spoke in a lazy tone, as if it were mere amusement:

"The aura… just now.

It came from that cursed place, didn't it?"

He laughed—a short, quiet laugh, yet full of disdain.

"Hahaha… will the fun begin again?

This world has grown dull lately."

He tilted his head slightly, as if pondering.

"I wonder… will the other six move?

Or is it still too early?"

He sighed, then his smile widened.

"Hmph… very well.

I will wait.

I only want to watch… from afar."

And then the scene vanished as it had appeared, leaving no trace.

The world returned to its reality.

Rai and Arin's footsteps echoed on the dirt road; the Silent Forest was now behind them, a mass of shadows and memories.

The air had changed—it was no longer stifling, but carried something new… a possibility.

A brief silence fell, which Arin broke as he looked toward the horizon:

"Rai… when we enter the borders of Khazad, where do we head first?

Is there a village or city nearby?"

She replied without slowing her pace:

"Yes.

There's a city very close to the border, considered a fortress of Khazad."

He looked at her with interest.

"A fortress?"

She nodded.

"It's a city, but at the same time, it serves as the first line of defense.

Khazad, like the other kingdoms in this empire, builds cities along its borders.

Each one is a place where people live… and a fortress that repels enemies."

Then she added:

"The nearest one to us now is called Rotana."

Arin gradually understood, saying:

"So according to you… every kingdom in this empire has border cities that act as fortresses?"

Rai smiled.

"Exactly."

He paused for a moment, then asked:

"And when we reach Rotana… what do we do first?"

She laughed softly.

"You really ask a lot of questions, Arin.

Can't you wait until we get there?"

He laughed as well, shrugging at himself with mockery.

"You're right…

Since I arrived in this world, since I met you, I haven't stopped asking questions."

Then he lowered his head slightly, his voice softened.

"And even before I met you…"

She glanced at him for a moment, noticing the change, but didn't press him.

After a pause, she said:

"When we reach Rotana, the first thing we'll do is rent a house.

We'll stay temporarily until we decide whether to remain there or continue our journey."

Then she added, with a more serious tone:

"But before that…

When we enter Khazad's borders, we'll change our clothes."

Arin looked puzzled.

"Our clothes?"

"Yes.

This empire has its own culture and traditions.

From now on, you must follow them if you wish to remain within the path of this world, not outside it."

He nodded quietly.

"Alright… as you wish, Rai."

He hesitated for a moment, then asked:

"But after renting the house… what next?"

Rai smiled with a hint of cunning.

"As I told you before,

We'll explore what's happening inside the empire and verify the rumors about the sects."

Then she continued, looking at the road ahead:

"And only then…

will we know which path we must take."

Arin paused, then said:

"It's as if we don't choose the path… we just go with its current."

Rai smiled without looking at him.

"Exactly.

We must flow with the course of this empire."

They continued walking. The city hadn't appeared yet, but its presence was palpable.

It was clear that Rotana… would not be just another stop.

A brief silence fell between Arin and Rai—not heavy this time, but hesitant, as if giving the place a chance to familiarize itself with them.

Arin looked around with evident curiosity.

For the first time, he truly stepped out of the Silent Forest.

The sky seemed wider than he imagined, a clear open blue unobstructed by branches, and the ground stretched flat without limits, as if the world had finally decided to reveal its chest.

Yet…

that strange sense had not completely vanished.

The lingering shadow he had felt in the forest flowed behind him like a stubborn shade, not attacking… just reminding him it had been there.

Rai, on the other hand, walked steadily, her eyes fixed on the road ahead, as if she knew it by heart or simply refused to look back more than she already had.

Arin lowered his head slightly, thoughts crowding his mind.

"Is this new life… a blessing or a curse?

Nothing happens by chance," Rai had repeated.

"But can I truly change my life here?

Or will I just repeat the same mistakes… in a different world?"

He breathed deeply.

"I must change myself first."

From another perspective, it seemed like a crossroads.

A path that could lead to a better life…

And another that resembled his previous life, with the same weight, the same cycles.

Even the Silent Forest, despite his long stay there with Rai, was only a small part of this world.

A slice of a massive cake, as she had said.

Responsibility for oneself…

Truly exhausting.

Why is life so complicated?

Why don't things just flow as they should?

Arin exhaled a long sigh, as if expelling some of the overthinking, then broke the silence:

"Rai… when will we reach Khazad's border?"

She glanced at him slightly, then smiled.

"Ah, yes.

We are close now, don't worry.

When we arrive… you'll feel it for yourself."

He nodded quietly, but did not stop looking at her.

This time, he wasn't looking at the road… but at her.

He thought to himself, unintentionally:

"By the way… I think Rai is really beautiful.

Her long red hair…

Her eyes when she smiles."

A soft smile slipped onto his face unconsciously, and he found himself watching the way her hair moved with each step, enchanted by this simple scene.

And suddenly…

without warning, without realizing what he was doing, his voice came out aloud:

"Rai… you look like you inhale roses and exhale fragrance.

Are you breathing beauty?"

Rai stopped walking.

She looked at him slowly, her eyes slightly widened, as if her mind was trying to process what she had heard.

And in that moment…

Arin froze.

His eyes widened, and his face flushed instantly.

"S-sorry!

Sorry, Rai!

I didn't mean… I was just thinking… I mean… it was a slip of the tongue!

I really wasn't aware of what I was saying!"

And without warning…

Rai burst into laughter.

Short, genuine laughs made him feel even more embarrassed.

He quickly asked:

"Are… are you laughing at me?

I really didn't mean what I said!"

Rai wiped a small tear from the corner of her eye, still smiling, then looked at him with a slightly different gaze, one tinged with subtle admiration, and said:

"It's alright, Arin.

But next time…

you need to be mindful of what you say to me,

even if it's something like this."

She turned and continued walking, her smile unbroken.

Arin stayed for a moment, then followed her, his heart beating unusually fast.

He thought to himself, embarrassed:

"Rai is older than me, I suppose…

But…

that doesn't make her any less beautiful."

He sighed lightly, lowering his head.

"Ah… if only I were older."

And despite the embarrassment, despite the awkwardness…

Arin felt, for the first time in a long while,

a genuine lightness in his chest.

As if the road, with all its unknowns,

had smiled at him… even if just a little.
