While Brock was focused on grilling corn, Ash and Misty returned—and they brought with them someone very familiar to Sam.

"Ash, you already have three Badges? That's unbelievable," the newcomer said mockingly, not bothering to spare Ash's pride in the slightest. "I never thought someone like you could actually manage that."

Ash couldn't stand being ridiculed by a friend he'd grown up with. He glared at Gary and snapped back, "Don't get too full of yourself, Gary. You only have one more Badge than me."

"Haha, sorry about that," Gary laughed smugly. "But I do have one more than you."

Watching the two of them start bickering the moment they met, Misty could only sigh helplessly. Maybe this was just how Ash and Gary communicated.

Sam, however, was more curious. He looked at Gary thoughtfully. According to his memory, Gary should have gone to challenge the Saffron Gym, so why was he here in Rampurchi City?

Gary noticed Sam's questioning gaze and immediately understood what he was thinking. Scratching the back of his head awkwardly, he said, "I already challenged the Saffron Gym… and lost badly. It was miserable. I was almost turned into a doll by Sabrina."

Just mentioning the Saffron Gym brought back unpleasant memories for Gary. Sabrina was terrifying. Her Psychic-type abilities were strange and overwhelming, leaving him completely helpless.

"Hahaha! So you failed!" Ash burst out laughing the moment he heard that. "Gary, I never thought you'd have a day like this! Saffron Gym? I'll definitely get the Saffron Badge before you do!"

Gary didn't argue. Instead, he gave Ash a look full of ridicule.

He didn't believe for a second that Ash could defeat Sabrina. After experiencing her strength firsthand, Gary knew better than anyone how terrifying she was.

If Ash challenged her recklessly, there was only one possible outcome—getting turned into a doll.

Sam wasn't too worried, though. There was a saying: when strength isn't enough, the protagonist's luck makes up for it. Ash, with his main-character aura, would always find a way to get the Saffron Badge eventually.

"Sabrina's strength should be close to Elite four level by now, right?" Sam asked curiously.

Gary shook his head. "I don't know for sure, but she's far stronger than any Gym Leader I've challenged before."

The Kanto Region was different from other regions. The gap between strong and weak Gyms was enormous.

Weaker Gyms—like the Pewter Gym and Cerulean Gym—were places where beginner Trainers could succeed without much difficulty.

But the stronger Gyms were a completely different story: Viridian Gym, Fuchsia Gym, Cinnabar Gym, and Saffron Gym.

Giovanni of the Viridian Gym could hold his own even against regional Champions.

Koga of the Fuchsia Gym was an Elite four-level Trainer.

Blaine of the Cinnabar Gym was a close friend of Professor Oak and Agatha, and his strength was unquestionable.

As for Sabrina, she was a rare Psychic prodigy—Sam estimated she was only one step away from reaching Elite four level herself.

"Elite four?" Misty and Brock both stiffened when they heard that word. They exchanged uneasy glances.

According to their original plan, they were supposed to challenge the Saffron Gym next.

Should they… reconsider?

After all, Saffron City was the largest city in Kanto, and it had more than one Gym. Maybe choosing a different one would be safer.

"Awesome! Elite four sounds amazing!" Ash said excitedly. "I've decided—I'll challenge Sabrina after I finish my part-time job!!!"

Misty and Brock smiled bitterly.

They were fairly certain that Ash didn't actually understand what "Elite four" really meant.

Forget it. Let him try. They just hoped he wouldn't get crushed too badly this time.

Suddenly, Sam smelled something burning.

"Brock… is your corn burnt?"

"Huh?! Oh no—!"

Only then did Brock react. He'd been so absorbed in the conversation between Sam and Gary that he completely forgot about the grill.

He hurriedly turned the corn over, but it was already too late.

The corn was completely burnt.

Brock looked like he was about to cry. That corn had been grilling for a long time, and throwing it away meant the cost might be deducted from their pay—an even bigger blow for a family that wasn't well-off to begin with.

"(╯▽╰) It smells sooo good~."

Holding a freshly grilled corn cob, Sam took a big bite without hesitation.

"Hot—hot—hot!!!"

He'd eaten too quickly, nearly burning his tongue.

"How is it, Sam?" Brock asked anxiously.

Sam didn't answer.

His actions said everything.

Ignoring the heat, he continued chewing the corn happily, a satisfied expression appearing on his face again and again.
