Prologue.

Mizuhara Hashibira.

"My name is Mizuhara Hashibira. And I am 19 years old. I'm a freshman at the Sunside University, New York.

As you've probably already guessed from my name, I'm actually from Japan, Tokyo. I was born and raised there, but had to come move because my mother died and my father got imprisoned for her death when I was 14.

I live with my older brother now, Tanaka Hashibira, a 32 year old doctor. He's single and a bit of a doochébag, but he's a decent guy.

I'm not fully human either. I'm a Hybrid. That means that I'm a mixture between a human being (my mother) and an Essential (my father)—beings with the ability to manipulate and control energy.

Us Hybrids are easy to identify because of our abnormalities, that mainly being height (too short or too tall), weirdly shaped pupils and other various things like glowing eyes and fragility to normal weathers.

Because of our rarity, human beings often misuse our abilities for their own causes, which led to a massive war that reshaped laws and governments around the world to better aide both existing races. However, unfortunately for us Hybrids, we're shunned for our nature, and we're often called "Demons" because of the fear of our abilities and history.

Throughout time, over 300 000 years after Essentials first appeared, mankind has recorded multiple cases of Hybrids going on unexplained killing sprees. No one knows why though.

And it is because of both our potential and unexplained history, that Hybrids are seen as "lesser" beings. Some unlucky one have even become slaves, and even though it is illegal, it doesn't seem to stop.

Fortunately, fate was kind enough to let me be born in Japan, which has a strict law against Hybrid slavery and is home to the single, largest "Anti-Hybrid Slavery" Association in the world: AHS.

Growing up, I never really had close friends because I'm a Hybrid and when I moved here for Highschool I had hopes that would change.

However I was...used.

I'm no longer a virgin.

My brother nearly lost his job because of the extreme measures and lengths he went to find the culprit, but unfortunately under the Humanitarian Government Law, Humans are the only ones capable of punishing other human beings. The man got sentenced to life in prison, but got discharged when I graduated from Highschool for good behavior.

I don't want that to get to me though.

I have my own life ahead of me.

And so, with a traumatic past that I don't intend to let anyone know of, goals to become an Engineer and sheer willpower, I'm determined to change my life around.

Trauma be damned.

Hybrid stigmatism be damned.

I'm Mizuhara Hashibira.

And this is my life."
