Chapter 31 - Chapter 31: The Golden Leash

Abby stared at the gym access card for three days. It lay on her desk, a small, black rectangle that felt less like a perk and more like a moral challenge. Using it meant accepting Liam's control, but not using it meant denying her body the one thing that could truly ease the aches and growing discomfort of her advancing pregnancy: weightlessness.

She was now five months along. The curve of her belly was undeniable, requiring a careful rotation of maternity-friendly but still professional dresses for her rare, essential in-person meetings. Working from home had helped, but her back ached constantly, and the isolation was becoming suffocating.

On the fourth evening, around 11 PM, the desperation won.

She dressed in a simple, one-piece maternity swimsuit a dark, modest piece that offered maximum coverage. She pulled a heavy, oversized coat over it, tying the belt tightly to hide the silhouette, and put on a baseball cap. She felt ridiculous, sneaking out of her own apartment like a thief.

The private entrance to the Sterling Holdings gym was in a discreet service alley three blocks from the main office tower. She slid the access card, and the heavy steel door hissed open, sealing her into a world of polished marble and hushed silence.

The facility was breathtaking. It was vast, yet entirely empty. The main feature was the pool, a long, Olympic-sized expanse of turquoise water, enclosed in its own glass-domed room. The air was warm, humid, and smelled faintly of chlorine and ozone—a comforting, sterile scent that promised escape.

Abby felt a wave of profound gratitude mixed with guilt. This space was truly designed for the private use of a handful of people; Liam had given her a key to his innermost fortress.

She quickly shed her outer clothes and slipped into the water. The moment the buoyancy took over, the relief was instantaneous and overwhelming. The weight of the baby, the strain on her back, the pressure on her ankles it all dissolved. She felt light, graceful, and, for the first time in months, completely unburdened.

She pushed off the wall and began a slow, rhythmic crawl, letting the water support her. She swam for almost an hour, her strokes becoming slower, more meditative. The only sound was the gentle splash of her movement in the otherwise silent room.

She finished her swim and stood in the shallow end, leaning against the edge, letting the water lap around her growing belly. She closed her eyes, utterly exhausted but deeply, physically happy.

A loud, metallic thunk echoed from the entrance to the locker room.

Abby's eyes snapped open. Adrenaline cold and sharp shot through her. She was not alone. Someone else had come down to the private gym. She immediately sank lower in the water, trying to hide her belly, but it was too late. The person was already entering the pool area.

It was Liam Sterling.

He was wearing a pair of simple black swim trunks, his torso bare, wet hair slicked back from his face. He looked different raw, powerfully built, and utterly unexpected. He paused at the edge of the pool, his eyes instantly finding her in the dim, blue light of the water. He hadn't expected to find her here.

Abby froze, trapped, her secret now floating visibly above the water line, exposed by the light and the tightness of her wet suit.
