Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: The Diary

[Studied tea ceremony today, it's really troublesome. Can I do it? Mama says this is something everyone knows, and if I can't learn it, it proves I'm a fool. I'm not!]

[As expected, I'm not a fool, it's quite simple! Putting on an act is really interesting, hee hee. Also, why didn't Papa praise me?]

There were very few words on the first few pages; it was a diary after all, and children never focus on writing them.

[The family bought a piano. Neither Papa nor Mama can play, but they hope I can learn. With the previous experience of learning tea ceremony, I'm full of confidence now. Piano isn't hard, right?]

[I might be wrong, Yuno Gasai really is a fool.]

[Exhausted.]

[I can play a piece now! Richard Clayderman banzai! Yahoo!]

[Liszt... die die die die die multi-armed monster!]

Up to this point, the notebook still retained a cheerful and pleasant tone, with not only crooked black handwriting but also some cartoon figures drawn with pink thick markers.

On some pages, there were even stickers cut out and pasted.

Flipping further back, the cartoons gradually disappeared, and the handwriting became neater and neater.

[Piano and tea ceremony have become my daily practice items. Mama says it's to train me to become a great person.]

[A great person, huh... But can't great people control their own lives?]

[I can't record the things I started learning today, it's so troublesome. What are 'conversation techniques' and 'comprehensive emotional training'?]

[Learning to cook isn't that stressful because Mother teaches me personally. But she makes mistakes herself, forgetting to add seasoning, yet she loses her temper with me. Why?]

[It's snowing today. Mama hit me.]

[Fujita and a few classmates always clamor that I'm a Child without parents. I know, I'm just adopted, right? But so what. Tsk, kids are so boring.]

[I'm gradually falling behind in my studies because most of my time is spent in other training places.]

There were a few blank pages here.

[Back in the top three.]

[Argued with a classmate, Mama hit me again. Why?]

[Papa's gaze at me is ice-cold. Where is my teddy bear?]

[Even though I'm not their biological Child, they give me the best education and training. I'm very grateful.]

[But Mama, my fingers hurt, why do you prick me with needles?]

[Sen Getsusa, is that the name? Thank you for the band-aid.]

A few blank pages.

[The wound is healed. It seems recovery Ability is also my specialty! Great! Yuno Gasai.]

Sen Getsusa paused.

She remembered that a year ago, she had indeed handed a band-aid to a girl named Yuno Gasai.

In the washroom, she had her back to the door cleaning her finger—at the time, she hadn't thought much of it, thinking she had accidentally pricked it with a nail.

So, that's how it was?

[I discovered something big by eavesdropping!]

[Father said: 'It's about time, isn't it? Isn't that councilman just right for our family? We agreed when we adopted her. We've put in so much, it's time for her to give us some return.']

[Mother didn't agree with Father: 'It's a waste to use her like this. I can still train her a bit more, maybe in two years.' As a result, Father cursed Mother. 'Don't you just want to play with her like a doll? What about my career? You enjoy showing her off in front of those wealthy ladies, don't you? But if we don't get the project this time... if things are exposed, can you run?']

[Mama and Papa seemed to have reached a consensus, although they didn't look very happy. Today, they took me to a man's house.]

[He touched my hand, so I bit him hard. I probably didn't bite his finger off, but he screamed miserably. Tsk, so weak.]

[Papa also hit me. He almost blinded my eye with an awl. But I dodged. Next time, be careful next time; if you go blind, you're finished, Yuno Gasai.]

[People without value have no reason to exist.]

[I cursed Mother and Father for the first time.]

[Mother said that councilman is very powerful. Compared to what I've learned, serving him well would make my future even brighter.]

[She told me to be more tolerant of Father.]

[Tolerance? The word tolerance itself carries the implication of an open conspiracy.]

Sen Getsusa had unknowingly sat down on the chair. She continued flipping through this diary expressionlessly, not remembering how much time had passed.

And here, it was already the last few pages.

[I went to work at a convenience store.]

Page turn.

[Since making the decision to gradually break away from them, I have already taken the first step. Aoyama Nanami is a friend I work with; she dreams of debuting as a voice actress. Seeing her work so hard and diligently, I must also do my best.]

[Big surprise! She also knows Sen Getsusa! What a wonderful fate! She said she wants to be friends with me...]

Below, a long blank.

[Hahahaha is she a baka who hasn't grown up? Would I need a friend like this?]

[But for the sake of her knowing Sen Getsusa, I'll reluctantly respond with a few smiles. Annoying girl.]

[I heard Sen Getsusa was also adopted.]

[As expected, we are the same kind of people. Aoyama Nanami is so annoying, always looking at me with concerned eyes.]

[I want to gouge her eyes out.]

[Hee hee, just kidding.]

Page turn.

[Mother found where I work.]

[She threatened me that if I didn't quit, she would cause trouble for Aoyama Nanami.]

[Strange...? What does that girl's life or death have to do with me?]

[Mother says a woman's body is the greatest weapon. 'Don't you know how many people will like you after being trained? How much profit and power can you get?' Those words really make me sick.]

[Mother says I haven't grown up yet.]

[Is this growth, or destruction?]

A few pages were blank.

[Today, Sen Getsusa came to find me. I heard she was asked by Nanami. It's okay. The Savior won't remember every person she has saved—it's enough that those who were saved remember.]

The handwriting on the last few pages was a bit blurry. Sen Getsusa stood up and could only see clearly with the help of the light.

But what was described inside was another matter entirely.

[Father and Mother are very strange today, looking at me like I'm a stranger.]

[They said they won't give me away anymore, but will instead dedicate me to the great... who? I can't hear the name they are chanting clearly, but I have a bad feeling. Am I hallucinating?]

[I always feel like there's something strange in the air wrapping around me.]

[This might be the last time I write. It would be nice if I could live cleanly until summer. Because in that summer, I can meet that simple and sincere girl again.]

The diary ended here.

Sen Getsusa gently closed it.
