Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: Ritualists and the Secrets of Levels

"Is there anything else?"

Sen Getsusa toyed with the steak knife in her hand. The blade danced leisurely on the girl's fingers.

In the man's eyes, this was a dangerous signal.

"Of course there is, but..." His voice gradually lowered, bit by bit, making Sen Getsusa lean in closer.

Hmm?

"Die!!! Hahahahahahaha!"

The female monster that had been killed earlier—the head of Yuno Gasai's mother—suddenly jumped up!

It opened its mouth full of sharp teeth and bit toward the unsuspecting Sen Getsusa's neck!

"The era of reason is over!! Hahahaha!!"

Clang!

The female monster's long neck drove its head, rapidly approaching Sen Getsusa; the girl instead turned her head expressionlessly—the monster's gaze stared fixedly at the target.

Then it gradually veered off course.

Finally, it flew past the girl's ear.

How? How did it miss?

The monster's head showed a very human-like confusion; she tried her best to look back—she was like a tadpole that had lost its mother.

The neck behind the head twitched briefly.

The side connected to the body had long since been severed.

Impossible! Using this tactic, they had already killed several people!

The head rolled its eyes with effort, and she caught sight of a familiar figure.

Her adoptive daughter—Yuno Gasai, who had disappeared for a while—was standing beside the female monster's body, holding a huge... fire axe with a beaming smile.

It seemed she had just swung with too much force, even the floor had cracked, and wood chips were scattered all around her feet.

"Heehee, Mama? Does it hurt?" Yuno Gasai smiled and covered her face, reaching out to barely lift the axe, then swung it down forcefully and repeatedly at the monster's body!

Clang! Splat!

The sharp blade cut into the flesh, and blood splattered everywhere.

Yuno Gasai didn't want to just crush the heart directly.

She started from the legs, hacking upwards bit by bit, to the waist, then to the arms.

Muffled thuds and the monster's screams mingled; Sen Getsusa watched the girl who was on the verge of madness and sighed with some pity.

Then, with a squelch, she stepped on and crushed the female head that was trying to escape.

Yuno Gasai was still laughing loudly as she hacked at the twitching corpse. Sen Getsusa looked up at the man who had been gloating just a few seconds ago.

"What did you say just now? Your wife's head flew off too fast, I didn't hear you."

The man:...Do you think I still have a chance?

"So, you wanted Yuno because of a ritual?"

Seeing that she couldn't extract any more hidden information, Sen Getsusa turned the topic to the ritual.

Regarding rituals, she had always been very confused. According to the man, whether it was order or Chaos, anyone who wanted to become a Ritualist had to possess a ritual object and then perform the corresponding ritual.

How interesting, is this the recovery of the mystery?

"A ritual object is a great gift."

The man glanced at Yuno Gasai, who was picking up an axe and looking eager to try it on him, and his words spilled out rapidly: "After performing the ritual, you gain an Ability. Besides that, with every promotion, you gain an extra Ability, and your body strengthens as your level rises."

"Of course, becoming a Ritualist comes with a corresponding 'price,' which is a secret that no Ritualist wants to reveal."

Sen Getsusa asked curiously: "Just performing the ritual is enough?"

The man had a complex expression: "As long as you don't die or go insane... it's fine. If you are a 'Contactee' who has perceived the 'mystery' before, the success rate will be higher."

"Contactee?"

The man pointed at Yuno Gasai: "It's a human who has come into contact with order or Chaos and can still maintain their sanity. Such people are Contactees."

Sen Getsusa roughly understood: "So, the strongest 'Judgment' you mentioned is, logically speaking, Lv3. Does he only have three Abilities?"

Seeing that Yuno Gasai hadn't moved, the man finally settled down: "It can't be calculated that way. With every level of mystery increase, physical fitness takes a leap forward."

"Just like how your physical fitness alone, excluding the 'Teleportation' Ability, already surpasses us. The gap between 'Super-Sequence' and 'Origin Point' is just that large."

"It's imaginable. Someone at the Judgment level could also kill you with ease." At this point, the man showed a look of resentment.

Sen Getsusa remained noncommittal, but she didn't think so in her heart.

"And there are other ways to obtain more Abilities. However, I won't tell you."

Yuno Gasai raised her axe with a smile.

Sen Getsusa waved her hand to stop Yuno: "I don't want to know either. Now, tell me, what did you want to do to Yuno?"

The man hesitated, seemingly unwilling to speak, but the next second, he began to scream miserably.

"Aaaaaah! My leg!!!"

Yuno Gasai chopped off his leg with one swing of the axe; the thigh was severed at the root, the artery ruptured, and blood gushed out: "After saying so much, it turns out Papa is still just an ordinary person."

Yuno Gasai tilted her head, seemingly very disdainful of the man under her axe.

His white bone fragments were exposed, and blood mixed with muscle tissue fluid, gradually staining a large area of the floor.

"What do you know! You little bitch! You... if it hadn't been for being one step late, your mother and I would have already promoted to Super-Sequence!! It's all because of you; if we had adopted someone else back then, we wouldn't be dying here today!! Yuno Gasai!! Mr. Hikama will avenge me!! I curse you! The great Chaos will also for me—"

The man was losing blood very quickly, and he gradually began to lose consciousness. His eyes were bloodshot as he stared fixedly at Yuno Gasai standing before him, his mouth roaring vicious words.

"Who is Mr. Hikama?" Sen Getsusa asked.

The man ignored her and continued to curse frantically.

"Whether that Mr. Hikama and your great Chaos will avenge you, I don't know. But they certainly aren't good at healing."

Sen Getsusa pulled a tissue from her pocket and raised her hand to help Yuno wipe away the blood splattered on her face.

Under the other's gentle gaze, she turned her head to look at the man on the ground: "You're about to die, do you want me to save you?"

Hope emerged in the man's disdainful expression; he looked at Sen Getsusa, wanting to believe but not quite daring to: "Can you, really... do you know how?"

Sen Getsusa said directly: "No, I was just teasing you."

(.???. )

"Pfft, hahahahaha!"

Hearing the conversation, Yuno Gasai doubled over with laughter, her right hand holding the axe, dragging it across the floor with a screeching sound.

"Papa, Mama is already dead, you can go die too. I will inherit your property and resentment and live on well."

"You...!!" Unwilling to give up, the man wanted to say something more, but found he no longer had the strength to open his mouth.

His vision began to blur, and he couldn't even see the expressions of the two girls in front of him clearly.

The man wanted to move his body, and a cold, distant call rang in his ears.

He smiled as he heard the whispers.

That great existence had come to rescue him.

He would restore his missing limb, then stand up, empowered by the great strength, and kill the two women before him.

But in Sen Getsusa's view, the man's final spark of life was frozen in his strange smile.

Then, from the feet up, he gradually turned into ash, and the bloodstains scattered on the surrounding floor also slowly disappeared.

All the mess from the battle remained in the room, but the traces of the two monsters' existence vanished without a trace.

Sen Getsusa gently hugged Yuno Gasai, carefully took the axe from her hand and threw it aside, then patted her back to comfort her.

"It's okay, it's over. Yuno Gasai."
