Chapter 1 - chapter 1 - Beginning

A dimly lit, square room.

A worn-out laptop rested on the table beside an empty coffee mug. A lone figure sat in front of the screen, fingers moving mechanically as lines of text filled the file.

"Ahhh…"

Kaal stretched and leaned back.

"At last, finished. Give me a break… When will I ever be able to enjoy my life?"

He stared at the ceiling.

"What can I even do? Quit? Then what will I eat?"

A bitter laugh escaped his lips. "Life is unfair. Some people never know what work is, while others drown in it."

...

Far beyond the known universe, a cluster of light drifted aimlessly through the void. Without warning, it came to a sudden halt—then shot forward at impossible speed.

Its destination: Earth.

By sheer coincidence, it hovered for a brief moment above Kaal's apartment… and then plunged straight into him.

...

Kaal's POV

"What… is this?"

A massive surge of electricity tore through his body. His vision blurred. His limbs went numb.

"Is this the end of my life?"

A weak smile appeared on his face. "God… if there is a next life, please don't let me be born just to work again."

...

Unknown to him, as his consciousness faded, space itself wrapped around his body.

And he vanished.

Far away—beyond familiar reality, in an unknown universe, within a distant galaxy similar to the Milky Way—life thrived beneath a blue star.

People went about their daily routines.

Vendors shouted their prices.

Children tugged at their mothers' sleeves, begging for ice cream.

Students walked along narrow side roads.

Car horns blared endlessly. Dogs barked.

None of them knew that this fragile moment of peace was only for a few seconds more.

It was about to be destroyed forever.

...

Kaal suddenly snapped his eyes open.

"Where the hell am I?"

He was lying on the grass inside a park.

"Was I kidnapped?"

He jumped to his feet and looked around. People were pointing at him, whispering. Panic surged through his chest. He ran blindly until he reached a bench and collapsed onto it.

Ding.

Congratulations for crossing over.

"Who?"

Kaal turned his head left and right. "Who's talking?"

A translucent blue panel materialized in front of him, glowing softly. Along with it came a flood of information—what had happened to him, and why.

An unknown power had fused with his body. His original universe could not contain it, so he had been transported randomly to a world standing on the brink of awakening.

"So… the power manifested as a system?" Kaal muttered.

He had read countless novels in his free time. Systems. Transmigrators. World-crossers. He knew all of it.

He just never expected it to actually happen to him.

"But… awakening?"

"What does that even mean?"

"Show my status," he said instinctively.

...

Across the world, the sea floor split open with massive cracks of unknown depth. From within surged an overwhelming tide of evolutionary energy. It flooded the oceans, affecting every living being.

Fish turned into bloodthirsty monsters.

Some evolved into things no one could comprehend.

At the same time, the sky and land erupted with the same energy. It poured into everything—animals, plants, humans—triggering unknown changes across the globe.

In zoos, animals mutated violently.

In forests, plants twisted and evolved.

Every corner of the world changed.

Among humans, only a small fraction adapted and evolved.

Most could not.

Some resisted.

Others transformed into mindless, zombie-like beings.

Kaal was baptized by the energy as well.

Before he could process everything, screams erupted across the park.

A man was biting into a woman's neck.

Blood splattered.

Chaos exploded everywhere. People began attacking each other, while the uninfected ran desperately toward the exits.

Kaal sprinted out of the park—only to find the same nightmare everywhere.

Then he saw them.

A young mother and her daughter fell in the middle of the road. An out-of-control car sped straight toward them.

"Shit!"

Kaal ran.

To his shock, his body moved like lightning. He crossed the distance in an instant, lifted both of them as if they weighed nothing, and hurled them safely toward the entrance of a shopping mall.

"Brother… are you a superhero?"

The four-year-old girl stared at him in awe.

The mother could only stare, stunned, before bowing repeatedly. "Thank you! I will repay you someday, I swear!"

"Hide somewhere safe," Kaal said quickly. "Until this ends."

"Brother, don't go…"

The little girl tugged at his pants, tears in her eyes.

Kaal hesitated.

Then he picked up the girl, grabbed the woman's hand, and rushed them inside the mall. He led them straight to the dry food section.

"Take everything you can," he ordered.

They gathered biscuits, dried meat, canned food, water bottles, oil—anything that would last.

An hour later, they stood at the front with supplies worth months.

Then came the problem.

This place wouldn't stay peaceful.

Zombies suddenly rushed into the section.

Kaal shoved the two behind the counter and grabbed a fire extinguisher.

The first zombie leapt at him. He swung hard—its body flew across the aisle, smashing into another shop.

It still crawled toward him.

"They don't die like this?"

This time, he aimed for the head.

The skull burst.

Ding.

Zombie killed. Essence gained: 1.

More came.

After killing ten zombies, Kaal shut the section door and collapsed onto a chair behind the counter.

The little girl slipped from her mother's arms, ran up to him, and handed him a water bottle.

"Haha… thanks, little sister."

"You're welcome," she said seriously. "My mommy says we should help people who help us."

"You have a good mother," Kaal said, nodding toward the woman.

She looked at him, full of questions.

The three of them rested in silence—for now.
