Chapter 37 - Being Underestimated

Elion shook his head as he looked at the chief surgeon slumped on the floor, looking dejected.

He looked at the second assistant, who was still relatively calm, then pointed at Wendy, who seemed to be the most rational one in this ball of shit they were in.

"Can you be my assistant? Now that things have reached this point, I think you have no choice but to trust me." Although Elion truly knew that Wendy would trust him, he wanted to make it clear that he needed her help.

Wendy looked at Elion, then silently walked to the position where Elion had been standing as Sebastian's assistant, which was taken as her acceptance of Elion's suggestion.

Elion let out a soft sigh, picked up the fallen curved scissors, and after disinfecting them, began to carefully remove the remaining adhesions.

In fact, Sebastian had already completed most of the dissection over the past two hours.

The part left to Elion now was not too difficult.

Elion only needed to keep his hands steady and carefully peel it away.

Wendy, who had gone from second assistant to first assistant, gradually entered the zone under the influence of Elion's steady presence. Watching the two people working diligently at the operating table and Albert's stable heart rate, the chief surgeon, Sebastian, who was sitting on the floor, felt somewhat amazed.

Am I dreaming?

Has the doctor he had set aside to do simple tasks now become his savior?

When Elion took control, he thought everything would end in disaster and that they, along with the fate of their families, had reached a grim end. But now, it seemed as if Elion was firmly in control.

If he hadn't witnessed it with his own eyes, who would believe that this feeling of rebirth came from a doctor who was not that experienced performing such a complex leiomyosarcoma removal surgery?

César, who was far from the scene, also witnessed the development of events.

He was already surprised that the surgery had remained stable for so long without any mistakes. He even felt a sense of vengeful pleasure when he saw the surgeon give up.

This is the consequence of listening to the advice of a doctor who came from who knows where at the last moment of the surgery!

Especially when the doctor nobody knew took the position of the lead surgeon, César felt a mix of anticipation and fear that Albert's heart would stop beating.

But as time passed, Albert's heart rate did not change at all! He watched with increasing astonishment as the doctor removed the tumor without making a single mistake.

Next, the abdominal cavity was rinsed with warm saline solution and the abdomen was closed, all in one go. Even after the surgery was completed, César was still in shock.

The tumor surrounding the abdominal aorta was simply removed like that?

That is absolutely incredible!

How did Elion manage to save a surgery that was almost a failure?

Everyone looked at the surgeon they knew so little about with surprise. No one had any expectations about the outcome before the surgery ended. Yet Elion almost single-handedly completed the second half of the operation!

Seeing Elion's incredibly calm expression, even César, who had witnessed the entire process, couldn't help but ask, "How exactly did you do that?"

With complete confidence, Elion pointed at the bodyguards who were still blocking the door and said, "I never fail at my job, especially in cases like this. But actually, it doesn't matter whether we did a good job or not—what matters is what they decide."

"They? Don't worry, they can't kill us while we're still in the hotel, although I don't doubt they'd break the rules on our patient's orders."

Elion shook his head and looked at Albert, who was still unconscious, with a faint mocking smile on his lips. "Hey, the one on the operating table is the one who makes the rules."

The rules are like a sword of Damocles hanging over the heads of those who dwell in this hotel, but to them, they are merely a friendly reminder, since they could very well be deranged killers.

"We won't be safe until Albert is fully awake and declares success."

After hearing what Elion had to say, César fell silent.

That was precisely why he was unwilling to perform surgeries on important figures.

God knows how Albert will react when he wakes up and finds out he's missing a kidney. But it's not him who underwent the surgery, so it should be… fine, right?

After a somewhat anxious wait, Albert, who was in a coma, frowned and slowly opened his eyes.

When Albert saw the bright incandescent light above him, a look of joy immediately crossed his face. The fact that he could see this familiar incandescent bulb meant that he had survived!

This was a successful surgery!

He had successfully preserved his wealth and status!

These doctors deserved a reward!

But when he sat up, he suddenly realized something was wrong.

Why are there two lumps of flesh on the surgical tray when he only had one tumor?

Somewhat surprised, he looked at the surgeon.

"Hey, old man, did I really have two tumors in my body?"

Sebastian opened his mouth, not knowing how to explain the situation. Seeing that the chief surgeon didn't speak, Albert sensed that something was wrong. He looked at the second assistant, Wendy, who lowered her head and didn't dare meet his eyes.

Albert instantly flew into a rage. "What? You dare to make the cut, but no one dares to tell me what really happened?"

While everyone remained silent, Elion suddenly stood up.

"Let me explain this simply. We removed one of your kidneys because it was preventing the removal of the tumor."

"What did you say?!" Albert's voice instantly turned cold. "You dared to remove a perfectly healthy kidney! Such audacity!"

Elion, seemingly oblivious to Albert's murderous gaze, calmly said, "At that moment, the best option was to remove a kidney, because otherwise you would have died."

At that moment, César seized the opportunity to intervene and immediately shifted the blame. "This guy proposed the plan! He was the one who performed the surgery!"

Albert's gaze followed the sound to César. "So, you were not involved in the surgery?"

Feeling the pressure of Albert's gaze, César swallowed hard and said:

"No, it was all done by this guy."

Hearing César's answer, Albert's pale face—already made even paler by the surgery—suddenly broke into a smile. "Ah, very good, very good."

The tense muscles in César's body immediately relaxed. But what followed was a deafening gunshot!

Bang!

Everyone looked at Albert in shock.

Albert pulled a Glock from under his pillow and killed César!

Watching the smoke rise from the barrel of the gun, Albert revealed a cruel smile.

"I called you here to operate, not to stand around watching. Useless cowards who do nothing should go to hell! As for you…"

Albert looked at Elion, as if considering something.

After witnessing Albert's ruthless murder, Elion realized that those at the High Table were never benevolent people.

They are a murderous organization that kills without hesitation!

There is no nuclear peace crisis in this world, but there is a well-balanced criminal system in the world! A dark organization hidden beneath the surface of a benevolent society! Every day, countless people from all walks of life die because of the High Table!

He had started by working in the wrong direction! If he wanted to solve the problem of his insufficient lifespan, he would have to save an enormous number of people.

Removing the High Table would guarantee him an almost infinite lifespan!

Instead of working hard every day to save people, fearing that the system would collapse if he saved one person less, it would be better to eliminate this evil platform and solve the problem once and for all!

[Feeling the host's great ambition to save the world, the system is upgrading…]
