Chapter 18 - CP:18 Heading For Temple Heist

ONE HOUR LATER:

Alex finally managed to extract himself from the Cuddle Trap of Doom (trademark pending) by threatening to pee on both of them if they didn't let him up.

It worked.

Barely.

Now he was sitting by the fire pit, wrapped in a fur blanket because apparently going through heat twice in four days meant his body didn't know how to regulate temperature anymore, studying Leo's temple sketches with intense focus.

"Okay," he said, pointing at the carved stone map. "Walk me through this one more time. Entry point?"

Leo padded over, settling beside him. His white fur was still mussed from sleep, making him look almost... soft. Domestic. It was weird on a nine-foot apex predator.

"Here," Leo indicated with a claw. "The eastern wall has a service entrance used for deliveries. It's small, hidden behind decorative vines, and rarely guarded even during normal times. During the ceremony, it will be completely abandoned."

"And it leads directly to the main level?"

"Yes. We'll enter here, move through the public worship space—this large chamber—and locate the tapestry depicting the First Hunt." Leo traced the path. "Behind it is the servant staircase. Narrow, dark, perfect for stealth."

Naga slithered over, having returned from a "perimeter check" that Alex suspected was actually just him sulking because the cuddle session ended. "What about patrol patterns? Even during the ceremony, there may be stragglers."

"The ceremony requires EVERY member of the tribe to attend," Leo said firmly. "It's sacred law. To miss it is to invite dishonor. Even the elders who can barely walk make the journey to the sacred grove."

"And Raqasha?" Alex asked. "She'll be leading it, right?"

"From start to finish. The ritual takes approximately four hours—beginning at sunset, ending at moonhigh. She cannot leave early without breaking the ceremony, which would be..." Leo's nose wrinkled, "...spiritually catastrophic for the tribe."

[System: Translation: Psychic Priestess will be BUSY. Estimated window of opportunity: 4 hours. Estimated time needed for heist: 1.5 hours. Margin for error: 2.5 hours. Not terrible odds!]

"Okay, so we have a window," Alex said, feeling slightly more confident. "We get in, find the ugly tapestry—"

"It is VERY ugly," Leo confirmed. "Gold thread on purple fabric. Depicts a lion strangling a serpent."

Naga's eye twitched. "Of course it does."

"—find the ugly anti-snake tapestry, take the servant stairs to level three, Leo uses his blood to open the door, I grab the stone with my 'righteous intentions,' and we run like hell. Simple."

"Nothing about this is simple," Naga muttered.

"It's RELATIVELY simple," Alex amended. "Compared to, say, fighting a dragon. Which we'll have to do eventually for stone."

"Let's survive stone number two first," Leo suggested.

"Fair point."

They spent the next hour going over every detail. Backup plans for the backup plans. What to do if they encountered unexpected guards (Naga: "Eat them." Alex: "NO." Leo: "Maybe just knock them unconscious?"). What to do if the stone guardians activated ?(Run. Just run. There was no other option).

What to do if Alex went into heat mid-heist?

That one was harder to plan for.

"If I start showing symptoms," Alex said, trying to sound clinical about it, "we abort immediately. No heroics, no 'just one more minute,' we leave. Agreed?"

"Agreed," both beastmen said, though neither looked happy about it.

"And if we DO get the stone," Alex continued, "we head straight back here, grab our supplies, and move to a new location. Because once Raqasha realizes the stone is gone and that Leo was involved, she's going to come after us with everything she has."

"Let her try," Naga said darkly. "She'll find that serpents are far more dangerous than she anticipated."

"No eating the holy lady!" Alex said automatically.

"You take all the fun out of problem-solving."

By midday, they'd planned everything they could possibly plan. Now it was just a matter of waiting.

And waiting was the worst part.

Alex tried to distract himself by organizing supplies, checking his system mall inventory (60 SP remaining), and absolutely NOT thinking about the fact that his body felt... warmer than it should.

[System: Heat Status: 25% and rising steadily. Estimated time until critical: 5-6 hours. Which coincidentally is RIGHT when you'll be inside the temple! What are the odds? :D]

"Stop smiling at my suffering," Alex hissed at the glowing cat.

[System: Never! Your suffering is my entertainment! Also, pro tip: maybe buy some Heat Suppressants from the mall? They won't stop the heat completely, but they'll delay the worst symptoms for about 2 hours. Cost: 150 SP.]

Alex pulled up the system mall interface immediately.

There they were: Heat Suppressants (Emergency Use) - Delays full heat onset by 120 minutes. Side effects may include dizziness, mild nausea, and intensified symptoms when suppression wears off. NOT recommended for regular use.

150 SP.

But he only got 60 SP total.

[ Don't worry Host, you got bunch of other points like entertainment points, confidence points, panic points, etc.etc. I can transfer those points into SP for you. ]

[ 1 SP = 3 miscellaneous points]

[ Plus you got 50 SP from your side quest of healing the lion. ]

[ 60+ 50 SP=110 SP]

Alex stared at the floating holographic panel like it had personally insulted his entire bloodline.

"1 SP costs THREE miscellaneous points?" he repeated, voice climbing into a register usually reserved for cartoon characters stepping on Lego bricks. "That's highway robbery! That's interdimensional loan-shark pricing!"

[System: Supply and demand, baby! Your miscellaneous points are basically the loose change of the multiverse. SP is the premium currency. You want premium results? Pay premium prices.]

[System: Converting…

Entertainment: 87 → 29 SP (thank you, endless apex predator drama)

Confidence: 42 → 14 SP

Panic: 119 → 39 SP (mostly from the last 72 hours)

Comedy: 15 → 5 SP

Domestic Fluff: 38 → 12 SP(very recent addition)

Sass: 22 → 7 SP

"Why Is My Life Like This": 67 → 22 SP]

[Total converted: 128 SP

New SP balance: 110 + 128 = 238 SP]

"Convert everything except 30 miscellaneous points," Alex said through gritted teeth. "I want to keep a tiny emergency buffer in case I unlock 'Existential Crisis Points' later and need something to spend them on."

[System: Wise. Converting… Done!

New SP balance: 60 + 90 = 150

Remaining miscellaneous points: 30 (mostly leftover Panic, because of course)]

Alex exhaled like he'd been holding his breath for three days.

"Purchase the Heat Suppressants. Both doses. And throw in another Scent-Masking Cloak while you're at it—28 SP, right? I want backup."

Two small glass vials and a second gossamer cloak materialized in his lap.

The vials went into the magic backpack for emergency use.

"What is that?" Naga asked, having noticed the sudden appearance of mysterious glowing fluid.

"Insurance," Alex said, tucking it carefully into his magic backpack. "If my heat starts hitting during the heist, it will buy us two more hours."

"And after two hours?"

"Then it hits HARDER, apparently. But by then we'll hopefully be out of the temple and somewhere safe."

Leo's tail swished nervously. "I don't like the sound of 'hits harder.'"

"I don't either, but it's better than the alternative." Alex looked between them. "We're really doing this, aren't we? Tonight. For real."

"Yes," they said together.

Alex took a deep breath. "Okay. Then let's make sure we're ready."

The rest of the afternoon passed in a blur of preparation.

Naga checked and rechecked their escape routes.

Leo went over the temple layout one final time, making sure Alex had memorized every turn, every landmark.

Alex practiced moving quietly (he was NOT naturally stealthy, it turned out), tested the cooling salves and healing potions in his backpack, and tried very hard not to think about the growing warmth in his body.

As the sun began its descent toward the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange and gold and deep purple, the three of them stood at the cave entrance.

Alex wore his simple linen clothes—comfortable, easy to move in. The magic backpack was secured across his shoulders, holding the black crystal (Naga had insisted Alex carry it for "emotional support"), the heat suppressant, healing supplies, and emergency rations.

Naga had shifted to his full serpent form—twenty feet of pure muscle and scales, intimidating and beautiful in equal measure.

Leo looked every inch the warrior he was—muscles coiled and ready, eyes sharp and focused.

"Ready?" Naga asked quietly.

Alex's heart was pounding. His hands were shaking slightly. Every instinct screamed that this was dangerous, that they should turn back, that—

"Ready," Alex said, and meant it.

Leo pressed his forehead to Alex's briefly. "Stay close to us. Don't take unnecessary risks. And if anything goes wrong—"

"Run like hell. I know." Alex managed a shaky smile. "Let's go steal a sacred artifact."

[System: QUEST ACTIVATED! "The Great Lion Temple Heist" - FINAL PHASE! Objectives: Infiltrate temple (0/1), Locate golden stone (0/1), Escape without dying (0/1), Don't go into heat at the worst possible moment (0/1). GOOD LUCK, HOST! YOU'RE GONNA NEED IT! :D]

And with the setting sun at their backs and danger ahead, the three of them set out toward the Lion Tribe territory.

Toward the temple.
