Chapter 61 - Chapter 57: The Dinner and the Question

Jujutsu High. Mirai's Cabin.

Dusk.

The Zenin servants cleared the table and left immediately. They were not staff; they were Zenin shadows.

Mirai, White Zetsu, Maki, and Mai sat together.

A reunion after two years.

Zetsu picked at his food like a child.

"You sisters are really dishonest," he complained.

He tossed a piece of beef into his Caterpillar's mouth.

"Maki is too strong-willed. You care so much about proving yourself to the clan idiots that you overlook how much Mai depends on you."

"And Mai," Zetsu pointed his chopsticks at her. "You're overly sensitive. Just because Maki left without you, you thought you were abandoned and ran to Kyoto out of spite."

"You clearly care about each other, but you insist on acting like enemies."

"WHITE ZETSU!!" Mai slammed the table, her face flushing red with shame and anger.

If Mirai wasn't there, she would have pulled her gun.

Maki frowned. "Eat your food. Stop talking nonsense."

"I'm a Curse," Zetsu shrugged. "Why would I eat?"

"Knowing you're a Curse," Mai gritted her teeth. "How dare you judge human emotions!"

"I don't understand human emotions," Zetsu laughed.

"But these aren't my words."

He pointed a thumb at Mirai.

"Mirai-boy told me all this."

Silence.

Maki and Mai froze. They looked at Mirai.

They could argue with Zetsu. But if Brother Mirai said it... it was the truth. They didn't have the courage to refute him.

"Eat," Mirai said softly. The gentle smile from the training grounds was gone. He was just calm.

The sisters ate in silence, stealing glances at each other.

...

After the Meal.

"I'm going to train with Panda," Maki stood up, nodding to Mirai. She glanced at Mai, then left.

"I have to go too," Mai said softly. "Kyoto has a meeting."

"Mai," Zetsu suddenly asked. "Why don't you drop out of Kyoto and come back to the Zenin Clan?"

Mai stopped at the door. She looked at Zetsu, then at Mirai reading on the sofa.

"Is that... his order? Or yours?"

Zetsu pointed to himself. "Mine."

"Nerve," Mai scoffed, but her voice was soft. "Call me if you miss me. Or I'll come see you."

She walked out, breathing a sigh of relief.

Thank god it wasn't Brother Mirai asking.

If Mirai asked, she couldn't refuse. But she didn't want to abandon her Kyoto friends.

...

"Looks like you care about that girl more than I do," Mirai commented without looking up from his book.

"Is that not allowed?" Zetsu flopped onto the sofa. "I watched them grow up. Can't a Curse have feelings?"

"Get this straight," Mirai turned a page. "It should be: they watched you grow up."

"Same difference," Zetsu grinned. "By the way, why were you late today? Todo almost killed me."

"Don't forget your Miracle technique," Mirai said. "You're not that easy to kill."

Mirai pulled a box from his Kamui Dimension and tossed it to Zetsu.

Inside was a long nail wrapped in a talisman.

A high-grade Cursed Object made by Juzo Kumiya.

"The Exchange Event starts in a few days," Mirai said. "When the chaos starts, plant this."

"It contains a barrier key. It will let Kenjaku's forces in."

"Won't I get caught?" Zetsu asked, worried. "If they find my residuals, Gojo will suspect me immediately."

"Don't worry," Mirai said calmly. "There is already a Traitor among the students working for Kenjaku."

"By the time they suspect you, everything will be settled."

"Plus," Mirai smiled. "I will destroy your residuals before Gojo sees them."

"Hehe," Zetsu grinned, pocketing the nail. "Grandpa never fails."

...

The Next Morning.

Sunlight filtered through the curtains.

Gojo Satoru sat on a sofa, legs crossed.

Nanami Kento read a newspaper opposite him.

"Nanami," Gojo muttered. "Do you think... I should just kill that Fake Smiley Guy?"

Nanami paused. He lowered his newspaper.

"By Fake Smiley... do you mean Zenin Mirai?"

"Yeah."

"Please don't joke about such terrifying things," Nanami adjusted his glasses. "I just got back. I don't want to be unemployed again."

"I'm not joking," Gojo's voice dropped. It was heavy. Serious.

"If I killed him... what would happen?"

Nanami frowned. He thought about the Zenin Clan. The political balance. Mirai's power.

"The Jujutsu World..."

"Would fall into total chaos."
