Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: Retreat

"Hyūga Akira! Step forward onto the ring!"

The examiner's amplified voice boomed across the arena, shattering Akira's momentary paralysis. Hundreds of eyes—ranging from curious students to sharp Jonin commanders—were now locked onto him.

Walking down the concrete steps toward the arena floor, Akira's mind worked in overdrive.

"Should I just surrender immediately and play the weakling? Or should I beat this Uchiha brat within an inch of his life for dragging me into the spotlight?"

He weighed his options coldly. Showing too much strength would ruin his low-profile strategy and draw unwanted eyes from Danzō and the elders. But surrendering instantly without throwing a single punch would look too suspicious for a Hyūga. He needed a middle path: a respectable, believable loss.

As Akira stepped onto the cold stone ring, the high VIP balcony buzzed with quiet murmurs. The Hokage, Danzō, and the senior advisors leaned forward with mild curiosity. However, the moment Akira's dark bangs shifted in the wind—revealing the intricate, green Bird Cage curse mark etched onto his forehead—most of the top officials lost interest. To them, he was merely a Branch House servant, bound by the seals of his lineage.

Down in the stands, the fan club of young girls cheered wildly for Itachi. While Akira possessed a sharp, handsome face that could easily rival the Uchiha prodigy, the unhidden, ominous curse mark on his forehead acted as a barrier, keeping most of his peers at a distant, uncomfortable length. Akira had never bothered to cover it up like other branch members; he simply didn't care.

In the center of the ring, the proctor stepped between them. "Form the Sign of Confrontation!"

Both boys raised their hands, forming the traditional half-ram seal. Akira remained utterly silent, his expression an unreadable mask of total apathy.

Itachi's dark eyes narrowed slightly. "You aren't going to ask why I challenged you?"

Akira didn't answer. He simply dropped his sign, slid his left foot back, and sank into the classic Gentle Fist stance, pulling a standard kunai from his holster.

"Begin!" the proctor shouted.

Instantly, Itachi's crimson single-tomoe Sharingan flared to life. A subtle ripple of subtle Genjutsu washed over Akira's sensory network, attempting to warp his perception.

Without missing a beat, Akira flared his internal chakra flow, instantly shaking off the illusion before it could take root. Moving at a completely normal, average Academy pace, he surged forward, thrusting his kunai toward Itachi's chest.

Clang!

Itachi blocked the blade effortlessly with his own kunai, using the momentum to deliver a swift kick that forced Akira back. Flipping into the air, Itachi mid-flight completed a lightning-fast sequence of hand signs.

"Fire Style: Fireball Technique!"

A roaring sphere of flame burst from Itachi's mouth, sweeping across the stone floor toward Akira.

Rather than revealing the Hyūga's high-level Eight Trigrams Palms Revolving Heaven, Akira quickly formed two basic hand seals. "Wind Style: Wind Breakthrough!"

A heavy gust of compressed wind erupted from Akira's mouth, slamming directly into the advancing inferno. The elements clashed in a loud hissed explosion, creating a thick wall of white smoke that blanketed the center of the ring.

Thwack! Thwack! Thwack!

Through the mist, a volley of shuriken and kunai whistled toward Akira.

He dodged most of them with standard maneuvers, but deliberately miscalculated the trajectory of a final incoming blade. The metal tip grazed past his upper left shoulder, slicing through his black shirt and leaving a faint, bleeding flesh wound.

Closing the distance through the smoke, Akira lunged at Itachi's frame, driving two swift Gentle Fist strikes into the boy's chest chakra points.

POOF!

The figure dissolved into a cloud of white smoke—a Shadow Clone.

"Byakugan!" Akira muttered softly.

Veins bulged sharply around his eyes as his vision expanded three hundred sixty degrees. He immediately spotted the real Itachi standing several meters away on a raised stone pillar, already drawing another set of shuriken.

Akira raised his wounded left arm, using his kunai to block the incoming steel with a series of dull clangs. He then pressed his right hand firmly over the bleeding cut on his shoulder, dodging the remaining projectiles with deliberate, sluggish movements.

Creating a wide gap between them, Akira came to a sudden halt. He looked at his blood-stained fingers, then raised his uninjured right hand high in the air.

"I surrender," Akira stated plainly.

A stunned silence fell over the entire arena.

Itachi froze, his Sharingan deactivating as he stared at Akira in genuine surprise. He opened his mouth as if to ask why Akira was giving up so easily when he still had plenty of chakra left, but Akira didn't even grant him eye contact. Akira's pale eyes remained fixed entirely on the referee.

Recovering from his shock, the proctor raised his hand. "Winner by forfeiture: Uchiha Itachi!"

Without waiting for the cheers or the formal presentation of Itachi's headband, Akira turned around, tucked his hands back into his pockets, and casually walked off the ring. His face remained completely expressionless, totally unbothered by the loss.

Returning to his section in the stands, his classmates stared at him with strange, distant expressions—as if looking at a complete stranger who had somehow survived a monster.

"Akira!"

Izumi and his classmate friend rushed over to his side, both looking anxiously at the blood seeping through his torn sleeve.

"You're bleeding! We need to take you to the infirmary right now!" Izumi urged, her voice laced with panic.

"I'm fine," Akira said flatly, though he didn't refuse. Turning toward his class instructor, Chunin Daikoku, Akira asked in his usual calm tone, "Sensei, may I have permission to visit the medical room to get this dressed?"

Daikoku looked at his student with a deeply complicated, unreadable gaze. He had seen Akira block a high-level Fireball and break a Sharingan Genjutsu—skills far beyond a standard six-year-old—yet the boy had given up the moment he took a minor scratch.

"Granted," Daikoku said softly, waving his hand. "Go get it cleaned up."

"Thank you, Sensei," Akira replied quietly. With Izumi and his classmate hovering nervously beside him, he turned his back on the roaring crowd and walked toward the quiet hallways of the Academy.
