Chapter 2 - Infected

No doubt she wouldn't mind giving them her food, which would shorten her supplies and eventually shorten her days of survivability, but Lukas couldn't take it.

They might survive one or two more days, but then what? He needed at least a week's supply so that just in case some evolved people saved them.

As Elena went inside, he looked towards the moving zombies and was surprised to see one of them going to another street..'Now or never.'

He calmly opened his gate before closing it and walked slowly towards the convenience store. The zombies were looking in different directions. One thing was very obvious — their sense of smell wasn't as good as he thought.

Well, good thing for him. He walked as quietly as possible. If he could take down even one of them by surprise and run for the convenience store, then he might be able to collect something before the other zombies grouped on him due to the noise the others would make.

Dodging one zombie would be much safer than entangling in a mess with two or three.

He reached almost 5 meters distance when one of them began turning around. Lukas steeled his resolve and tightened his grip around the iron rod he was carrying before dashing and immediately swinging it towards the neck.

Killing these zombies was much harder. Stabbing their heart and head wouldn't work, but it wasn't that they didn't have a weak point — it was their neck. Their neck consisted of a special crystal which was known as the evolution crystal.

This crystal gave those who had survived the virus strength to increase their strength further. Currently he couldn't use it, so he would just smash it.

THACKKKK!

A blunt sound echoed as the rod met with the rotting flesh and the neck of the zombie got broken instantly, making its head tilt without support.

The zombie was dead, and before it could fall down, Lukas heard a low-pitched shrill, "Screeeee—"

Lukas immediately dodged the hand coming towards him and ran for the market while dropping the rod. He didn't have time to kill it. He just wanted to grab some food before coming out.

He could already see the convenience store, and to his relief its entrance was already broken.

"Screeeee…" The zombie was coming towards him, but since it was slower than an actual human due to being mindless, he could work around it.

The only thing he feared was hordes of them gathering around the store before he could leave it.

He entered the store, grabbed a trolley and only went for sweets and breads which could give more calories. As he began picking, the zombie entered inside too.

Lukas pulled the racks in its way as he kept going deeper, filling the trolley. When he felt it was enough, he made his way out from the other portion while the zombie was always following him.

As he reached the entrance though, he saw the two zombies which had left earlier coming towards him, but what made his skin crawl was the horde of zombies coming from the other street, and they weren't much further.

"Dammit…" He immediately sped up and decided to ram through the zombie coming from the front.

His thoughts were perfect, but alas, the moment he came out, one of the wheels of the trolley hit a small pebble and since his speed was too much, the trolley instead of hitting the zombie straight in the middle, hit its left leg only before tilting and disbalancing.

This made Lukas disbalance too, and before he could let go of the trolley and balance himself, he saw the other hand of the zombie coming towards him while it was still falling down. "Fuck."

He tried to move away by making himself fall, but one of its fingers still grazed his right thigh and he felt it… "FUCCKKK."

He cursed out loud as he fell to the ground. He looked at the spot on his thigh which was bleeding with indignance. He gritted his teeth and stood up immediately before grabbing as much bread and chocolate bars as he could and making a run towards his villa.

These zombies ate those who weren't infected, and right now even if he was scratched, it took one day for the infection to spread throughout the body. So in their eyes he was fresh juicy meat, and he didn't want to die being eaten alive.

Thankfully his house wasn't far and he made it. He looked towards Miss Elena who had come back with a few packets of bread and was standing on the balcony with her eyes wide open.

He didn't know if with her vantage point she saw him getting infected or not… 'whatever.'

He used his one hand to open his gate and after entering he closed it shut. His wound was a single scratch and wasn't much visible, and he really didn't want Hannah and Grace to find it out.

In past years they had become a little less interactive because of only one reason — his lustful hormones. He had developed feelings for them even though they were his sisters, especially his biggest sister Hannah.

It wasn't his fault though. His sisters were the most beautiful among all the women he had seen in his life. Nonetheless it was awkward to think like that.

Even though they were not blood related, it didn't make it less awkward. His sisters definitely were aware of it but they never confronted him for it.

They still took care of all his basic needs and talked whenever he wanted to talk. Maybe it was him who had put the distance himself first. After all, he wasn't utterly handsome to match their beauty and felt a little self-conscious about himself.

He wasn't ugly either, somewhat above average but not even close to them.

'What the hell am I even thinking?'

He was about to die and given the fact that only 1% survived, he was sure that he wouldn't be that lucky.
