Chapter 24 - Fallen Comrades

"Do you think these walls are thick enough to bury your sins, Fabio?" The voice haunted Leah's mind as she stood in the darkness of the corridor. The words belonged to no one. They were merely the echoes of her own soul beginning to revolt.

The hallway felt far more silent than usual tonight. Leah stepped forward with caution. Her thin silk nightgown brushed against the marble floor without a sound. She recalled the brief conversation in the garden that afternoon. Emma had stood beside her with a flat expression, yet her eyes had scanned the surroundings with sharp vigilance.

"Mr. Fabio does not like to be disturbed when he is in there," Emma had said then. Her index finger had pointed briefly toward the double doors, the entrance to an office that felt more like a tomb.
