The staircase waited beneath us.
I stood at its entrance, unable to move.
My brother.
The word kept repeating inside my head.
My brother.
I looked at Rowan again.
No.
Not Rowan.
The person I had known as Rowan.
The person who had watched me from shadows.
The person who had appeared whenever danger came close.
The person who had somehow always known things about me that I couldn't remember.
My brother.
"You knew," I whispered.
He nodded.
"You knew all this time."
"Yes."
"You knew who I was."
"Yes."
"And you let me believe you were a stranger."
"I had no choice."
I laughed bitterly.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
His face tightened.
"I was eight when they took me."
I stopped.
"What?"
"The Architects."
He looked toward my mother.
"They took me because they discovered I carried the other half of the bloodline."
My mother's eyes filled with tears.
"I tried to stop them."
"But you couldn't."
She shook her head.
"No."
Rowan looked back at me.
"They trained me. Studied me. Tried to make me compatible with the Design."
"And you escaped?"
"Eventually."
"How?"
He looked at the staircase.
"The First Heir helped me."
My heart tightened.
"She was already gone."
"Not completely."
He touched his chest.
"She left part of herself inside me."
I stared at him.
"The Keeper?"
He nodded.
"That is why I survived."
A deep vibration moved through the staircase.
The Source spoke again.
"Open the First Door."
Everyone turned toward me.
I looked down at the silver key.
It was warm in my hand.
"What happens if I open it?"
Rowan answered quietly.
"We find out why the First Civilization disappeared."
Adrian stepped forward.
"Or we unleash whatever destroyed it."
The older Architect immediately agreed.
"Exactly."
I looked at him.
"You're afraid."
"Yes."
The answer surprised me.
He didn't deny it.
He stepped closer.
"You should be afraid too."
"Why?"
"Because everything you've learned so far is only the surface."
The First Generation began whispering among themselves.
The silver-haired woman walked toward the staircase.
"We should seal this place again."
I looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because the First Door was never meant to be opened."
"Then why was the key given to me?"
She didn't answer.
I looked at Rowan.
"Why?"
He stared at the door.
"Because the first Heir believed someone would eventually have to open it."
"Who?"
He looked directly at me.
"You."
I took a deep breath.
Then I stepped onto the first stair.
The entire sanctuary went silent.
I descended.
One step.
Then another.
Lena followed immediately.
"Ariana."
I looked back.
"You don't have to come."
She rolled her eyes.
"You really think I'm letting you go down there alone?"
A small smile escaped me.
"Thank you."
Adrian followed.
Then my mother.
Elara remained at the top.
I looked at her.
"Aren't you coming?"
She shook her head.
"Some doors are not meant for me."
"Why?"
Her eyes moved toward the silver key.
"Because I opened one once."
She looked away.
"And I regret what came through."
I wanted to ask what she meant.
But the staircase began moving.
The walls shifted.
The entrance above us disappeared.
We were trapped below.
Lena grabbed my hand.
"That's comforting."
I almost laughed.
The deeper we went, the colder it became.
The walls were covered with writing.
Some of it looked familiar.
Others didn't.
I touched one of the symbols.
A memory flashed.
The first Heir stood here.
She was holding the same silver key.
But she wasn't alone.
A man stood beside her.
His eyes were blue.
Not Rowan.
Someone else.
He looked angry.
"You can't do this."
The first Heir shook her head.
"Someone has to."
"You'll destroy everything."
"No."
She held the key tightly.
"I'll give them a choice."
The man grabbed her arm.
"You don't understand what choice will cost."
She pulled away.
"Then let humanity decide whether the cost is worth paying."
The memory disappeared.
I opened my eyes.
"There's another person."
Rowan looked at me.
"Who?"
"The man with the blue eyes."
His face changed.
"Where?"
"In the memory."
"Was he young?"
"Yes."
Rowan stopped walking.
"Did you see his face?"
"Yes."
"Who was he?"
Rowan looked toward the darkness.
"The first Architect."
My stomach dropped.
"The first?"
"Yes."
Adrian frowned.
"But the Architects claim their organization began after the collapse."
"They lied."
Rowan continued down the stairs.
"They existed before the collapse."
I followed.
"Then why?"
"To control the Source."
We finally reached the bottom.
A massive circular chamber opened before us.
At its center stood a door.
It was unlike anything I'd ever seen.
No handle.
No lock.
Just a smooth black surface covered in golden symbols.
I stepped toward it.
The silver key began glowing.
But it didn't move.
I looked at Rowan.
"What do I do?"
"Place it against the door."
I did.
Nothing happened.
Then I heard a voice.
Not the Source.
Not the First Hunger.
A woman's voice.
My mother's.
But younger.
If you're hearing this, Ariana, then they failed to stop you.
I froze.
My mother stepped forward.
"That recording…"
The voice continued.
I know you will have questions.
I looked at my mother.
She was crying.
I couldn't tell you the truth because they were watching every memory I created.
My mother's voice sounded weak and frightened.
They believed I was protecting the Source.
The door began glowing.
But I was protecting you.
I swallowed.
There is something you must understand before you open this door.
The chamber shook.
The Source is not the greatest power beneath this world.
Everyone went silent.
It is the lock.
My heart stopped.
The recording continued.
And something has been trapped behind it since before the First Civilization.
The door suddenly opened a fraction.
Blackness appeared beyond it.
Not darkness.
Something deeper.
Something that seemed to swallow the light around it.
The Source inside me reacted violently.
I stumbled backward.
Lena caught me.
"What is that?"
I couldn't answer.
A whisper came from beyond the door.
Not one voice.
Thousands.
We remember you.
The golden symbols across the walls changed.
A new message appeared.
THE HEIR HAS RETURNED.
Then another.
THE KEEPER HAS RETURNED.
Rowan stepped beside me.
His eyes began glowing blue.
And finally, a third message appeared.
THE BETRAYER HAS RETURNED.
I looked at Rowan.
He stared at the door.
"No," he whispered.
"What?"
He shook his head.
"I didn't betray the Source."
The door opened wider.
A figure stood beyond it.
Tall.
Motionless.
Blue eyes glowing in the darkness.
I recognized him immediately.
The man from my memory.
The first Architect.
But he shouldn't have been alive.
His face was exactly as it had been thousands of years ago.
He looked at me.
Then he smiled.
"My daughter."
I stopped breathing.
Rowan stepped in front of me.
The man's eyes moved to him.
"Still protecting her?"
Rowan raised his hand.
Blue light filled the chamber.
The stranger smiled.
"You never learned."
The golden light inside me surged.
"What don't I know?"
The stranger looked directly at me.
"The reason you were born wasn't to save the Source."
He stepped forward.
"It was to replace it."
The chamber exploded with light.
And the First Door opened completely.
