Chapter 7 - The Lawyer's Office

The phone rang several times before a receptionist answered, her voice crisp and professional. "O'Connell & Associates, how may I direct your call?"

Elara's palms were sweating. "Yes, I'm trying to reach Michael O'Connell," she said, her voice trembling slightly. "My name is Elara, and it's a personal matter."

The receptionist paused. "Mr. O'Connell is a very busy man," she said. "May I ask what this is regarding?"

Elara hesitated. How much should she reveal? Should she mention Liam? Should she explain her connection to the family?

"It's about his son, Liam," she said, finally. "It's important."

There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line. Then, the receptionist said, "Please hold."

Elara waited anxiously, her heart pounding in her chest. She could hear the muffled sounds of office chatter in the background, the clicking of keyboards, and the ringing of phones.

Finally, the receptionist came back on the line. "Mr. O'Connell will see you," she said. "Can you come in tomorrow at 10:00 AM?"

Elara could barely contain her excitement. "Yes, of course," she said. "Thank you so much."

The next morning, Elara dressed carefully, choosing a simple but professional outfit. She wanted to make a good impression, to show Michael O'Connell that she was serious about finding Liam.

As she approached the O'Connell & Associates building, she couldn't help but feel a sense of trepidation. The building was imposing, a towering skyscraper that seemed to reach for the sky.

She took a deep breath and walked inside, her heels clicking on the polished marble floor. The receptionist greeted her with a polite smile and directed her to a waiting area.

The waiting area was decorated in a minimalist style, with sleek leather furniture and abstract artwork. Elara sat down and waited, her nerves on edge.

Elara stood up and followed the receptionist down a long hallway to a large, imposing office. The office was filled with expensive furniture, leather-bound books, and framed diplomas. Behind a large mahogany desk sat a man who looked to be in his late fifties, with graying hair and a stern expression.

This was Michael O'Connell.

He stood up as Elara entered the room and extended a hand. "Ms. Elara," he said, his voice formal and reserved. "Please, have a seat."

Elara sat down in the chair opposite his desk, her heart pounding in her chest. She took a deep breath and began to speak.

"Mr. O'Connell," she said, "I'm here because I'm looking for your son, Liam. I haven't seen him in a few weeks, and I'm worried about him."

Michael O'Connell's expression didn't change. "I haven't seen Liam in a long time," he said, his voice cold. "He doesn't contact me."

Elara hesitated. "I know about your family's past," she said. "About the business, and the legal troubles."

Michael O'Connell's eyes narrowed. "That's none of your business," he said, his voice hardening.

"I'm sorry," Elara said. "But I care about Liam, and I think his past might have something to do with his disappearance. I just want to help him."

Michael O'Connell sighed and leaned back in his chair. "Liam is a grown man," he said. "He makes his own choices. I can't control him, and I don't want to."

Elara was taken aback by his coldness. "Don't you care about him?" she asked.

Michael O'Connell hesitated. "Of course I care about him," he said, his voice softening slightly. "But our relationship is… complicated. He blames me for what happened to our family. He thinks I ruined everything."

Elara felt a pang of sympathy for both Liam and his father. It was clear that there was a deep rift between them, a wound that had never healed.

"Do you know where he is?" she asked.

Michael O'Connell shook his head. "No, I don't," he said. "But I know that he's been struggling. He's been trying to make a new life for himself, but it hasn't been easy."

Elara felt a glimmer of hope. Maybe Michael O'Connell could help her find Liam, even if he didn't want to admit it.

"Can you give me any information that might help me find him?" she asked. "Any contacts, any friends, anything at all?"

Michael O'Connell hesitated, his expression thoughtful. Finally, he reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a small card.

"This is the name of a friend of Liam's from high school," he said. "I don't know if he's still in contact with him, but it's worth a try. His name is Daniel."

Elara took the card, her heart filled with gratitude. "Thank you," she said. "Thank you so much."

As she left Michael O'Connell's office, Elara felt a renewed sense of hope. She was one step closer to finding Liam, and she wasn't going to give up until she had found him.
