Chapter 60 - Chapter 60 — Between Blades and Teacups

Multiple POV

Meiji 39 (1906)

Early Winter Morning

Morning — Training Returns

The cold sharpened everything.

Breath fogged faintly as Kai adjusted his stance beneath the wisteria. Frost still clung to the ground in thin patches, crunching softly beneath careful steps.

"Again," Kanae said gently.

Mitsuri grinned and obeyed—feet planted wider now, shoulders relaxed, blade flowing instead of forcing its way forward. Her strike stretched cleanly through the air, powerful and controlled.

Kai nodded. "Better balance."

She brightened instantly. "Really?"

"Yes."

That was all it took.

Shinobu watched from the side, arms folded, eyes sharp. "You're compensating less with your shoulders," she noted coolly.

Mitsuri puffed up. "That's because I'm amazing."

"You're because you practiced," Shinobu corrected.

Kanae laughed softly. "Both can be true."

Kai stepped forward next—not to demonstrate power, but restraint. His movements were smaller now, quieter, the sun contained rather than blazing.

Kanae felt it immediately.

He's learned how not to burn.

They finished breath-steady, unhurried, no one pushing past their limits.

Training ended not with exhaustion—but clarity.

Midday — Slice of Ordinary

Lunch was simple.

Rice balls. Pickled vegetables. Tea that steamed warmly against cold fingers.

They sat close by habit now—no discussion needed.

Mitsuri leaned in to steal from Kai's plate. He shifted it just out of reach.

"Hey!"

"Eat your own," he said calmly.

Kanae slid one of hers into Mitsuri's bowl. "Share."

Shinobu smirked. "You're enabling her."

"Yes," Kanae replied peacefully.

Kai hid a smile.

😈 The Mothers Strike Again

That was when Mrs. Kanroji entered with a tray.

Mrs. Kocho followed.

Both paused.

Both observed.

Both smiled far too knowingly.

"Well," Mrs. Kanroji said cheerfully, "training's going well, I see."

Mrs. Kocho nodded. "Very disciplined. Very close."

Shinobu froze. "…Mother."

Kanae cleared her throat. "Is something wrong?"

"Oh no," Mrs. Kocho replied smoothly. "Just impressed by teamwork."

Mitsuri squeaked when Mrs. Kanroji added, "Especially the kind that naps together."

Kai bowed instinctively. "We maintain appropriate rest intervals."

Mrs. Kanroji beamed. "So responsible."

Shinobu muttered, "They're enjoying this."

"They deserve joy," Kanae said, resigned but smiling.

Evening — Balance

As dusk settled, Kai stood at the engawa, watching snow threaten but never quite fall.

Kanae joined him. "You're doing well," she said quietly.

"…With training?"

"With life."

He glanced at her. "I learned from you."

She smiled. "And we learned from you."

Behind them, Mitsuri laughed loudly at something Shinobu said—rare and bright.

Kai watched them.

Training had made them strong.

But days like this—

Days of effort, laughter, and teasing mothers—

Those were what made them steady.

He inhaled.

Exhaled.

Balanced.
