Meiji 40 (1907) — Early Autumn
Kai — 15 years old
Location: Azabu outskirts, riverside path
The river hadn't changed.
It still flowed slow and steady, catching the afternoon light in soft silver ripples. Children still skipped stones farther downstream. Cicadas still sang, thinner now, as summer loosened its grip.
But the four of them had changed.
They walked together along the bank, steps unhurried, presence unmistakable.
People noticed.
They always did now.

Quiet Strength — Observed
Mitsuri walked ahead, hands clasped behind her back, posture relaxed—but her balance was perfect, center never wavering. Her breathing flowed even when she laughed, even when she turned suddenly to say something bright and careless.
Kanae walked beside Kai, calm as ever, eyes taking in everything. The world seemed to slow slightly around her, as if it respected her rhythm.
Shinobu trailed half a step behind, gaze sharp, expression mild—but every movement precise, economical. Power folded neatly into grace.
And Kai—
Kai moved like the sun restrained.
Not blazing.
Contained.
Every step measured. Every breath exact. The air around him felt… clear.
If someone had the eyes to see it, they would've known.
Hashira-level. All of them.
And Kai—standing just short of something greater.
A door not yet opened.
---
Sitting by the River
They settled beneath a willow, roots curling near the water's edge.
Mitsuri kicked off her sandals and dipped her feet into the river with a delighted hum. Kanae sat gracefully, hands folded in her lap. Shinobu leaned against the trunk, arms crossed loosely.
Kai sat last.
Too stiff.
Too quiet.
Kanae noticed first.
"…Kai," she said gently, "you've been holding something in all afternoon."
Mitsuri tilted her head. "You're thinking-face is on."
Shinobu narrowed her eyes slightly. "And you only get that quiet when it's serious."
Kai stared at the water.
The river flowed on, uncaring.
"…I need to tell you something," he said.
The air shifted.

Kai's POV — The Truth
"I'm going to join the Demon Slayers."
No dramatics.
No buildup.
Just the truth, laid bare.
Mitsuri froze.
Kanae inhaled slowly.
Shinobu's expression sharpened—not in surprise, but calculation.
Kai continued, voice steady.
"Demons exist. Stronger than anything most people can imagine. I've known for a long time." He clenched his hands slightly. "And people like me—people with this kind of strength, this kind of breathing—they get noticed."
He finally looked at them.
"At some point… someone will connect the dots."
Sun Breathing.
His face.
His growth.
"A legend," he said quietly. "If they realize what I am—or who I resemble—then everyone around me becomes a target."
The river whispered against stone.
"I won't let that happen," Kai said. "So I'll move first. I'll draw their attention away. I'll fight."
Resolve—not reckless.
Protective. Absolute.

Girls' Reactions — POVs
Mitsuri
Her chest hurt.
Not because she didn't understand.
But because she did.
"…You're planning to go where it's dangerous," she said softly, hands curling into her skirt. "So we'll be safe."
That was Kai.
Always that.
Her voice wobbled—then steadied.
"…You're not wrong," she admitted. "But you don't get to decide alone."
She looked up at him, eyes fierce.
"I won't be left behind."
Kanae
Kanae felt pride—and fear—braided together.
This is the man he's becoming, she realized.
Not chasing glory.
Choosing burden.
"Kai," she said gently, "do you think we haven't already noticed the world changing around us?"
She smiled, calm but unyielding.
"If you walk into the fire, we will walk beside it. That is not weakness."
Her eyes softened.
"That is trust."
Shinobu
Shinobu was quiet longest.
Then she spoke.
"…You think distance will protect us," she said. "That if you shoulder everything, we'll stay untouched."
She stepped closer, gaze sharp and emotional in a way she usually hid.
"That's not how bonds work."
Her voice dropped.
"And for the record—if demons come because of you—then they'll regret it."
A pause.
"…Because we are not fragile."
---
The Unspoken Pact
Kai looked at them—really looked.
Not girls he needed to shield.
But equals.
Fighters.
Family.
"…I didn't want to drag you into this," he said honestly.
Kanae reached out and placed her hand over his.
"You didn't," she replied. "We stepped in ourselves."
Mitsuri nodded fiercely.
"Besides—you're not the only one with a calling."
Shinobu smirked faintly.
"And if you think we'd let you go alone—"
She let the sentence end.
The river flowed on.
Witness.
---
Ending
They sat together until the sun dipped low, shadows stretching long across the water.
No final decisions spoken.
None needed.
Some paths were chosen the moment people stopped walking alone.
And as the first stars appeared above Azabu—
Four figures sat by the river,
strong enough to change fate,
and finally honest enough to face it—
Together.
