Chapter 86 - Chapter 85 — When the Web Burned and the Night Fell Silent

Meiji 45 (1911)

Kai — Age 16

Multiple Locations

---

I. Three Years of Silence

For three years, Kai hunted without announcement.

No proclamations.

No dramatic entrances.

No witnesses left alive to spread his name.

Just records.

Hidden ledgers. Whispered Kakushi reports. Fragments of demon hierarchy stitched together patiently.

The Twelve Kizuki were not myths to him.

They were a system.

And systems could be dismantled—if one waited long enough.

Kai sat beneath a lantern at the Butterfly Estate one night, parchment spread before him. Names, locations, movement patterns.

Shinobu knelt beside him, eyes sharp behind her glasses.

"…This one," she said, tapping a mark. "Lower Moons move erratically. But the Upper Moons—especially Six—are territorial."

Kai nodded. "And Rui?"

Shinobu's fingers stilled.

"…Mount Natagumo," she said quietly. "He's been there for years. Obsessed with 'family.'"

Kai rolled the parchment closed.

"Then we start there."

---

II. Mount Natagumo — The Web That Thought It Ruled

The mountain smelled wrong.

Not rot.

Not blood.

Control.

Threads stretched between trees, vibrating faintly as if the forest itself were alive.

Shinobu adjusted her grip on her blade, breath steady—but her eyes burned with focus.

"This is not training," she said softly.

Kai glanced at her. "I know."

They stepped forward.

---

The Spider Family Died First

The "Father" charged.

Kai didn't draw his blade fully.

One step. One flash. One soundless collapse.

The "Mother" screamed.

The forest burned—not with flame, but with precision.

Threads fell like dead veins. Demons didn't even have time to comprehend fear.

Kai moved through them like daylight cutting fog.

By the time Rui sensed danger—

It was already too late.

---

Shinobu vs Rui

Rui descended from his perch, pale eyes sharp.

"…You're not part of my family," he hissed.

Shinobu smiled.

"No," she said lightly. "I'm here to end it."

Rui attacked.

Fast.

Precise.

Deadly—by normal standards.

But Shinobu was not normal anymore.

Her footwork was perfect. Her breath sharp. Her blade flashed—not to cut, but to pierce.

Poison flooded Rui's system in seconds.

He staggered. Screamed. Tried to regenerate.

Shinobu stood close, eyes cold and unwavering.

"This poison," she whispered, "was made for you."

Rui disintegrated.

Silence followed.

Kai watched her carefully.

Not assessing power.

Assessing resolve.

She exhaled slowly, shoulders relaxing.

"…It's done," she said.

Kai nodded once.

That night, the Corps received confirmation.

Lower Moon Five — Eliminated.

And with it—

Shinobu Kocho was formally recognized.

---

Hashira Appointment

Ubuyashiki's voice had been warm. Proud.

"Your mastery, intellect, and courage are unquestionable," he said gently.

"From this day forward—Insect Hashira."

Shinobu bowed.

Kai stood beside her, quiet—but something like pride flickered in his chest.

---

III. Yoshiwara — Lights That Hid Rot

The Entertainment District glittered.

Laughter. Music. Silk and illusion.

Kai hated it instantly.

"Flashy place," Tengen Uzui said, cracking his neck. "Perfect for flashy kills."

Kai glanced sideways. "I will burn it down quietly."

Tengen laughed. "I like you."

---

The Split

Daki revealed herself first.

Beautiful. Cruel. Loud.

Tengen took her without hesitation.

Meanwhile—

The ground shifted.

Gyutaro emerged from the shadows like a curse given form.

"…You stink of the sun," Gyutaro snarled.

Kai stepped forward.

"Yes."

That was all he said.

---

Kai vs Gyutaro

It wasn't a fight.

It was an execution.

Gyutaro's sickles shattered on contact with Kai's blade. His regeneration lagged—confused, panicked.

"What—what are you—"

Sun Breathing flowed effortlessly.

Not pushed. Not forced.

Just present.

Gyutaro's head hit the ground before his sentence ended.

Across the district, Daki screamed—

And then fell silent.

Upper Moon Six—Gone.

---

IV. Muzan Kibutsuji — Rage Without Precedent

The Infinity Castle shook.

Two names vanished from the board.

Muzan stood still.

Too still.

"…Impossible," he whispered.

Lower Moon. Upper Moon.

In the same era.

His fingers dug into flesh.

"…Sun Hashira," he snarled.

The name echoed like a curse he thought erased.

"…Find him," Muzan commanded, voice shaking with fury.

"Erase him. Tear apart anyone who walks near his light."

For the first time in decades—

Fear crawled beneath his rage.

---

V. The Corps Reacts

The Demon Slayer Corps did not cheer.

They went silent.

Reports circulated.

Two Kizuki.

Two Hashira-level victories.

No casualties.

Sanemi scoffed. "…This is getting ridiculous."

Giyu said nothing—but his grip tightened.

Kanae closed her eyes in relief.

Mitsuri covered her mouth, heart racing—not with fear, but pride.

Shinobu sat quietly, blade resting across her knees.

"…We're changing the world," she said softly.

Kai stood near the window.

"…No," he replied.

"We're reminding it what it forgot."

Outside, the night seemed thinner.

As if darkness itself was retreating.
