Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Whispers in the Dark

Chapter 18: Whispers in the Dark

The clearing was a charnel house. The coppery stench of fresh blood and the colder, fouler smell of exposed viscera hung thick in the air.

Shinra paid it no mind. The inherited memories of Whitebeard held vistas of battlefields that made this look like a skirmish. Death, on this scale, was just arithmetic.

He knelt, his movements gentle now, and gathered Kushina's unconscious form into his arms. She was a slight, warm weight against the night's chill. In a flicker of movement, he was gone, leaving only the silent dead and the creeping blood.

Seconds after he vanished, three shadows detached themselves from the deeper darkness under the trees. They wore the standard uniform and animal masks of Konoha's Anbu.

"What's the origin of that boy?" one murmured, his voice filtered and flat behind the mask. "To take out two Kumo chunin and three genin alone… and with that kind of efficiency."

"Unknown," another replied. "But his actions posed no threat to the Jinchuriki. If anything, he was the asset. You two, maintain covert surveillance on the Jinchuriki. I will report directly to the Hokage."

Without another word, the three shadows dissolved back into the night, leaving the grisly scene untouched. The forest returned to its moonlit quiet, the peace broken only by the dark stains and still forms on the ground.

Inside the Hokage Tower, beneath the carved face of the First Hokage, Sarutobi Hiruzen worked through a stack of mission reports and border dispatches by lamplight. Sleep was a luxury with the drums of war beating ever closer.

An Anbu operative knelt silently before his desk.

"The subject has been identified, Hokage-sama," the faceless voice reported. "Shinra. The orphan from the minor village we rescued some time ago."

"Hm?" Hiruzen looked up, his pipe pausing halfway to his lips. "That boy? The one recorded as having negligible chakra affinity? How did he develop such… decisive capability?"

"Unknown, sir. We can confirm that yesterday, at the academy, he defeated Uchiha Masaki in a sparring match. A single-strike victory."

Even through the emotionless report, Hiruzen caught the faintest hint of surprise. He leaned back, steepling his fingers. A boy with no recorded talent suddenly overpowering an Uchiha prodigy and then single-handedly dismantling a Kumo infiltration squad? The pieces didn't fit.

"Understood. Classify this incident. No public disclosure. Dispose of the Kumo operatives' remains discreetly." He paused, thinking. "And increase the Anbu detail assigned to protect Uzumaki Kushina. Subtly."

"Hai."

The Anbu vanished with a soft shush of displaced air.

Hiruzen rose and walked to the window, looking out over the sleeping village, its rooftakes silvered by the moon. The glow from his pipe cast flickering shadows on his lined face.

"Another genius emerging from the shadows?" he mused to himself, the smoke curling into the quiet room. After a long moment, a slow, knowing smile touched his lips. The village always found a way to produce remarkable shinobi in its hour of need.

"Shinra," he whispered to the night. "Let's see what you show me at the academy evaluations tomorrow. I am… expecting something interesting."

Shinra was aware of the Anbu. His rudimentary Observation Haki wasn't sophisticated enough to pinpoint them, but he could feel the weight of their attention, like faint pressure on his senses. He showed no sign of it. For now, it served his purpose. Let Konoha see a suddenly-awakened talent, a weapon to be honed. He would accept their resources, their training. It was a mutually beneficial arrangement.

He moved swiftly through the night, Kushina a gentle burden in his arms. The cool night air finally stirred her, and her eyelids fluttered open.

Her vision swam, then focused on a face above her—sharp features softened by concern, dark eyes reflecting shards of moonlight.

"Sh… Shinra…?"

A genuine smile, the first unguarded one in hours, finally broke through Shinra's stoic mask. "Yeah. You're okay. I've got you."

The simple words, the gentle smile bathed in moonlight, made Kushina's mind go momentarily blank. Then her gaze drifted to the strand of vibrant red hair clutched loosely in his other hand.

"That's…"

"Oh, this?" He glanced at it. "Very distinctive hair. It made you easy to track."

The blatant, casual compliment—disguised as practicality—flustered her completely. A blush, hot and fierce, raced up her neck to her cheeks. And then she became acutely, overwhelmingly aware of her position. Cradled in his arms. Her head against his chest.

"I… I… thank you…" she stammered, her voice a tiny, mortified squeak. She carefully, shyly, turned her face, pressing her burning cheek against the fabric of his shirt, hiding her expression.

Shinra's smile widened. Seeing the normally boisterous, fiery Kushina reduced to a blushing, stammering mess was a novel and oddly charming sight.

"Since when are you polite with me, dummy?" he said, his voice warm with amusement.

"I-I'm not!" she protested, but the words were muffled against his chest, barely audible.

He felt the faint tremor that ran through her, the slight loss of tension that indicated she was on the verge of complete meltdown. Teasing time was over.

"Right, right," he said softly, tightening his hold just slightly. "Let's get you home."

He poured on a burst of speed, becoming a blur through the empty streets. Kushina, buried in the scent of clean sweat, night air, and him, felt the solid strength of his body, the rhythm of his movements. The world outside became a smear of dark shapes and distant lights.

Her head spun, but it wasn't from the speed. It was from something else entirely, something warm and confusing and thrilling that had nothing to do with kidnapping or battles, and everything to do with the steady heartbeat under her ear.
