Chapter 33: Shinra's Declaration
"And now," the examiner boomed from the center of the ring, "we call upon the Third Hokage, Lord Sarutobi Hiruzen, to present the Chief Student badge to our champion, Shinra!"
From the shadows at the edge of the arena, Hiruzen stepped into the light, a benevolent smile gracing his aged face. He first walked to where Minato stood, placing a comforting hand on the boy's shoulder.
"Don't be disheartened. Your strength is exceptional. Use this as motivation. Set your sights on surpassing him. Konoha's future rests on shoulders like yours."
Minato, who had been wrestling with the sting of defeat, looked up. The Hokage's words weren't empty praise; they were a challenge. Set him as the goal. Surpass him. His blue eyes, clouded for a moment, cleared and reignited with a fierce, determined light. He looked across at Shinra and, surprisingly, a genuine, competitive smile touched his lips.
"Understood, Hokage-sama!"
Seeing Minato's spirit rekindled, Hiruzen's smile deepened with genuine relief. He gave a final, approving nod before turning and walking to the very center of the stage.
He raised his hands, and the roaring crowd gradually quieted.
"Today," Hiruzen's voice, amplified by chakra, carried warmth and authority, "we have witnessed the future of Konoha!"
"Namikaze Minato! Hyuga Tensho! Uchiha Shota! They are our geniuses! The pride of Konoha!"
He paused, letting the cheers for each name rise and fall before his gaze settled finally on Shinra.
"And Shinra… he is a genius among geniuses."
"I believe that with young shinobi like these carrying the Will of Fire, its light will not only endure—it will blaze across the entire shinobi world!"
The master orator worked his magic. The arena erupted once more, the atmosphere electric with pride and hope.
"SHINRA! SHINRA!"
"SO HANDSOME! AHHH!"
"MARRY ME, SHINRA-SAMA! LET'S HAVE A WHOLE CLAN!"
As the fervor peaked, Hiruzen turned to Shinra, his eyes twinkling. "Come, Shinra. Say a few words to your village."
Shinra blinked, caught off guard. Public speaking in front of thousands wasn't in his training regimen. He felt uncharacteristically… exposed.
"Ahem… Hello, everyone. My name is Wang—ahem! I mean, Shinra. My name is Shinra."
He cleared his throat, forcing a look of heartfelt sincerity. "The reason I stand here today is, first of all, thanks to my parents…"
Who I never actually had in this world…
"And finally," he continued, his voice gaining strength, "I want to thank my sensei… and my dearest friends, Uchiha Mikoto and Uzumaki Kushina!"
At the mention of their names, Takekawa-sensei beamed, accepting the congratulatory slaps on his back from fellow instructors. Mikoto and Kushina, sitting together, blushed a matching shade of deep pink, their faces alight with happiness and shy pride.
"It is their unwavering support and companionship that brought me to this moment," Shinra said, his tone softening with apparent genuine emotion. Then, he drew himself up, his expression shifting to one of grave, solemn intensity.
He took a deep, visible breath and shouted, his voice ringing with what sounded like pure conviction.
"My original home… is gone. It was Konoha that saved me! Without Konoha, there would be no Shinra standing before you today!"
The crowd hushed, drawn in by his passion.
"So, from the very first day I arrived here, I made a vow to myself!"
He paused, letting the silence build.
"I am a man of Konoha! Born under its leaves, I will die as its loyal spirit!"
His voice cracked with raw emotion.
"My greatest wish—my ninja way—is to use everything I have, every last bit of my strength, to protect Konoha! To ensure its glory shines for a hundred years, a thousand years!"
"This is my path as a shinobi!"
"It is the dream and the purpose of my entire life!"
He finished, chest heaving slightly as if the declaration had drained him.
A profound silence blanketed the stadium. Then, it broke into a wave of murmurs, sniffles, and thunderous applause. Sensitive spectators had tears in their eyes. The clan heads and elders in the stands watched, their earlier assessments softening into nods of deep approval and gratification.
Beside him, Hiruzen Sarutobi stared, momentarily stunned. He hadn't expected such a profound, deeply-rooted sense of loyalty from the outsider boy. A surge of pure, unadulterated delight washed over him. This was better than he could have hoped for.
And this… was exactly Shinra's goal.
This was his Declaration.
He was acutely aware of the reality. He had just humiliated an Uchiha heir and eclipsed the village's golden boy. He was an outsider with terrifying, unexplained power. In the shadows of Konoha, such a combination was a recipe for being "dealt with"—neutralized or turned into a puppet.
These words had to be said. They had to be broadcast here, now, in front of the entire village hierarchy.
By tomorrow, every man, woman, and child in Konoha would know: the village had saved a genius, and that genius had pledged his very soul to Konoha in return. He wasn't a threat; he was the ultimate loyal asset.
Every eye was on him now, filled with respect, admiration, and acceptance.
Hiruzen's gaze held a new layer of appreciation, his old eyes sharp with satisfaction.
And Shinra?
Inside, he was ice cold.
He knew the darkness festering within Konoha's roots. He knew about Danzo, about Root, about the countless sacrifices made in the name of the "greater good."
Giving his life for this village? Not a chance.
This speech was a shield. A brilliantly crafted piece of theater for self-preservation.
Because until he grew strong enough to become an unshakeable giant in his own right…
…the mighty tree of Konoha was the perfect, most fertile place for a sapling to thrive in the shadows, gathering strength unseen.
