Young Master Huai stepped out of the tent and, seeing the person standing in the garden, slowly approached.

"Second Miss Song."

The young woman, who had been lost in thought, turned around abruptly. In her eyes was the shimmer of tears she hadn't had time to hide.

Young Master Huai was taken aback.

Song Lianhe reacted a moment later, quickly turning away and raising a hand to wipe the corner of her eye. "The sun is too bright. Staring at it for a while made my eyes hurt."

Young Master Huai understood.

He naturally wouldn't pry, especially not with a young lady.

He sized her up. This Second Miss from the General Mansion was infamous—spoiled and domineering. Anyone who spoke of her bemoaned her lack of ambition, considering her a disgrace to her father, General Li Hua.

But the woman before him now was like a startled fawn in the woods—timid and helpless. Her lively eyes were veiled in a watery mist.

His direct gaze seemed to see straight into the depths of her lonely heart.
