Chapter 6 - The Ground-Work

Let me check my stats in order to have a better chance of being in the starting eleven. I want to focus on my speed, attacking position, finishing, shooting, dribbling, and ball control.

I wonder if I can choose these skills from the categories separately.

Ding!

Winston Daley Stats

Acceleration: 68

Sprint Speed: 69

Att. Position: 67

Finishing: 57

Shot Power: 66

Long Shots: 67

Agility: 45

Balance: 55

Ball Control: 66

Wow, it worked so the system can let me choose the skills I want to focus on. That's fantastic now that changes everything.

In this system, a user can choose at least five skills from different categories and place them into their own designated category.

"Since it is late at night, my parents won't let me go for a night run. The only thing I can do right now is push-ups." After fifty push ups Winston checked his stats, and he saw that. It rose a little, but not a lot.

I should wake up early and go to the training ground and start doing drills.

Waking up early in the morning, Winston didn't waste time. He skipped breakfast and shuffled his training clothes into his training bag, and started jogging to the training ground. Four grounds comprised the training ground, and people training and playing packed each ground. After Winston placed the training equipment. Lucky for Winston, he has been coming here for months when he needed to train. That he ended up making friends with the groundskeeper. So getting inside the training ground was not a challenge for him, unlike people who came to use the training ground. And the groundkeeper always put spare equipment for him. When he came back wearing his training gear. He started by doing 10 kilometers around the field as a warm-up.

Mmmm, that amazing my speed and agility got boosted by two points. I should boost them all to 70.

Unbeknownst to him, Winson glanced around and saw that it was late at night. Checking his phone, it was full of messages from his mother. When Winston looked over the fence, he saw his father's car parked on the sidewalk. Winston jogged to his father. "You left without saying goodbye. Why didn't you write a message?" His father added, "Any progress with your training?"

"I am sorry, dad I lost track of time. I feel like I am making significant progress. In the next match, I want to be in the starting eleven." Winston said, heavy-breathing, peeking inside the car window. "Proud of you, almost forgot your mother said I should give you this lunch box. She was worried about you," his father added, ''Call your mom back; she was going to look for you. Ever since that accident, your mother has been worried about you, so am I."

"I'll call her, and I'm sorry. How did you know I'd be here?"

"Your sister said something about GPS or location, or something like that."

"Hehehe, oh you mean location finder."

"Since you are safe, I need to go to work and call your mother. She will pick you up. I left her pacing the house."

"Will do, drive-safe, Dad."

Watching his father peeling out of the sidewalk parking space, Winston went back to the training ground and sat on the bench before calling his mother. He opened his stats to check his progress.

[User reward point: 05]

Wow, I finally received a point. And some of my skills have reached 70 at least some are now boosted from 50 to now 60. With this system, things have been a lot clearer. For now, I am satisfied, but I need to boost the ones that are stuck on 60. I should call my mom.

After done packing everything and waiting for his mother to pick him up, Winston eavesdropped on the couple of youths who were also in the training ground now going home. "Are you going to the under twenty-one match this coming Saturday?" One other youth replied with an enthusiastic voice. "Of course, are you kidding me? I will be there?"

"Hehehe, I forgot you like that player who plays central defense. What is the name again?"

"Lukas Hickman, he has been in the best form as of late, the best defender in our under twenty-one league, man, I want to play with him."

The other youth smirked, asking, "Is that why you changed your position to defense?" As the two youths passed Winston, who was leaning on the streetlight pole.

I hope Lukas Hickman doesn't become a threat on the field.

"Okay boys, the bus will arrive in about an hour, before that will go through the formation and the roster again," as the coach named all the first eleven players. Oswin interrupted Winston, who was trying to hear if his name would be called out.

"Hey man, after the game I wanna hang with me and my friends will be at the arcade later today." Winston, who was leaning over trying to hear Oswin.

The coach, holding a page, announced, "Oswin, you're the attacking midfielder. Maximilian, you're starting. Winston, you're on the bench." "Since the team we are playing with has one of the best defenses, I want defenders to hold an aggressive defensive line and I want midfielders and attack to play quick counter. Boys don't disappoint me and play like you want to in the championship. All team, make sure you prepare while we wait for the bus."

"Don't worry, man, at least you are in the subs; I am sure you will sub in the second half," said Oswin, who was patting Winston back.

"Don't worry about it, we got you–you got the best dribbling skills in our youth squad."

"Hehehe, hey say it louder now. I will score one for you since you are my fan."

"Hehehe."

When the youth formed a line to the bus, Winston tapped Maximilian on the shoulder to congratulate him on being in the first eleven. "Congrats, man, for being in the first eleven; I hope you have a great game."

"I don't need you to congratulate me; I was playing better than you in the training ground; we even beat you in the training. And I am the best player in this squid. Fucken loser."

"What with him," said Oswin, who was shaking and leaning on Winston's shoulder.

Winston shrugged, too confused. He guessed that perhaps Maximilian was nervous, being the only striker out there.

The league's popularity surprised Winston. He remembered playing in the under nineteen league. There was never this much attention then. The under twenty-one league was close to the lower leagues in terms of popularity. When he looked over the other team, he saw that the team they were playing with was under 21 Bush Hill Rangers F.C. Among the team he saw the player the youths in the training ground were talking about, Lukas Hickman.

He must be the player, the best defender in the Under twenty-one league.
