Chapter 51 - Chapter 51

MORNING SUNSHINE

The morning sun peeked through the curtains, hitting Kei's eyes. She blinked, feeling a bit weak but much better than the night before. The heavy weight in her chest was gone, and her skin no longer felt like it was on fire.

She looked around the room. It was clean, white and smelled exactly like Fay a mix of expensive soap and medicine. Then, she saw her.

Fay was asleep in a chair next to the bed. Her head was tilted to the side, and she looked exhausted. Her hair was a bit messy, and she was still wearing the clothes from last night. Even while sleeping, she looked a little grumpy.

Kei felt a rush of warmth in her heart. She stayed with me all night, Kei thought. A mischievous spark lit up her eyes. She couldn't help herself; the "Ghost" was back to her old ways.

Kei reached out and gently poked Fay's cheek. "Doctor… oh, Doctor…" she whispered.

Fay stirred, her eyes snapping open. She looked confused for a second before her face hardened back into its usual serious expression. She quickly sat up and felt Kei's forehead with the back of her hand.

"Your fever is gone," Fay said, her voice cold and professional. "You should get dressed and leave after breakfast."

Kei didn't move. Instead, she pouted. "Is that all? No 'Good morning, Kei'? No 'I'm so glad you didn't die'?"

"I'm a doctor, Kei. I don't get happy when patients don't die; I just expect it," Fay replied, standing up to stretch her stiff back.

"But you held my hand all night," Kei teased, a wide grin spreading across her face. "I remember. You were holding it so tight, like you were afraid I'd disappear again and you were crying! You were so worried about me~"

Fay's face turned pink. "I was not crying. It was just… leftover rain and I only held your hand so you wouldn't fall out of bed and sue me for medical malpractice."

"Oh, really?" Kei leaned forward, ignoring her shaky legs. "Then why is there a bowl of water and a cloth right here? And why do you have dark circles under your eyes? Admit it, Fay. You still care about me."

Fay turned her back, walking toward the door. "Eat the porridge I left in the kitchen. Then go home."

"Wait!" Kei called out, laughing. "If I eat the porridge, do I get a sticker for being a good patient? Or maybe a kiss on the cheek?"

Fay stopped at the door, her hand on the knob. She looked back over her shoulder, her eyes narrowing. "You get a bill for the professional nursing services I provided. It's very expensive."

"I'll pay in hugs!" Kei chirped.
