Elias held the paper in his hands for a long time. He didn't need to read it twice to understand what it meant. This was the move he had felt coming. Cassian was pulling him out of the dark corners and placing him directly in the light of the court.
He prepared neatly. He straightened his brooch so it was perfectly leveled—the act from yesterday would not work in a room full of high lords. He brushed every speck of dust from his grey tunic. He made sure his expression was flat and unreadable.
He had to be human enough to avoid looking like a mindless tool, but controlled enough that no one could see the gears turning in his head.
