Chapter 47 - Chapter 47: Stunned

The Bear Tribe had been preparing for two days.

Scouts rotated in pairs instead of alone. The outer perimeter had been widened. Sentries were stationed higher along the cliff ledges. Even the younger warriors had been kept close instead of sent to forage. Furs were secured. Weapons were inspected twice. The elders had met long into the night discussing protocol.

They knew he was coming.

Word had reached them ahead of time.

Still, knowing something and witnessing it were two very different experiences.

The first sign was not sight. It was pressure.

The air shifted.

Birds took flight all at once from the tree line. A low tremor rolled through the ground beneath the snow. Warriors along the outer ridge stiffened, claws sliding free from instinct rather than order.

"He is here," one of the scouts breathed.

The sky darkened briefly as a massive shadow passed over the treetops.

Several bears who had sworn they would not flinch took an involuntary step back.

The shape descended beyond the clearing in a controlled, deliberate arc. When it landed, snow exploded outward in a wide spray. The impact cracked the frozen surface of the ground.

The tribe saw him fully then ash did not approach in half measure.

He arrived in his beast form.

Scaled hide gleamed dark and metallic under the pale morning light. His wings, vast and heavy, folded slowly against his back. Horns curved backward along his skull, and his eyes burned molten gold as they swept over the assembled bears.

He did not roar he did not posture.

He simply stood there.

That was enough.

Warriors poured from the main cave entrance and from smaller side dens carved into the rock face. They formed a loose defensive line without being told. Their bodies angled protectively toward the inner chambers where their mates and children rested.

Growls rumbled low and uncertain in several chests.

They had prepared for this moment.

Preparation did not stop instinct.

A tall figure stepped forward from the center of the gathering.

The silver eyed bear.

He was larger than most, his fur thick and pale silver across his forearms and shoulders. His gaze was steady, calculating. Authority rested on him naturally, without the need for volume.

The murmuring quieted when he moved he stopped several paces from Ash.

For a long second, neither spoke.

The silver bear studied him carefully. Not just the size. Not just the obvious power.

He assessed posture. Scent. Intention.

Ash did not lower his head he simply held the other male's gaze.

The silver bear inhaled slowly.

Then again.

Recognition shifted his expression.

Subtle, but unmistakable.

He looked at Ash differently "You are mated," the silver bear said.

"Yes."

Ash's voice in that form was deeper, almost resonant against the rock walls.

"To her," the bear continued.

"Yes."

There it was.

The scent was woven into Ash's skin, unmistakable and layered. The silver bear could detect Luna's presence on him as clearly as if she stood at his side.

A few of the younger warriors glanced at one another in confusion.

One started to step forward as if to question further.

Ash moved before the thought could become sound he reached behind him and dropped a heavy bundle onto the frozen stone.

It hit with a sharp crack.

The wrapping split open, and gems spilled across the clearing in a cascade of color and light. Deep sapphires. Rubies the color of fresh blood. Clear stones that fractured the pale sunlight into shards.

The clearing went silent every eye shifted downward the silver bear looked at the offering, then back at Ash "For the disturbance," Ash said calmly.

A few bears swallowed.

This was not a bribe offered in desperation.

It was a gesture made by someone who considered such wealth inconsequential "You come unchallenged," the silver bear said slowly, "and throw treasure at my tribe."

Ash's gaze did not waver. "I do not need to challenge you."

The statement could have sparked a fight.

The silver bear studied him one last time.

Then he stepped back.

"Stand down," he ordered quietly.

The line of warriors hesitated they obeyed.

Ash shifted then.

Scales withdrew into skin. Horns receded. Wings folded and vanished. His form condensed into something more familiar.

Human.

Tall. Broad. Dark haired. The heat of his power still radiated faintly from his skin, visible in the way the air around him shimmered subtly.

His eyes remained molten gold.

The bears felt it more clearly this way.

Contained power pressed heavier than displayed power.

Ash did not waste time.

He inhaled.

The scent of his mate threaded through stone and fur and smoke. Warm. Sweet. Familiar.

His expression softened.

Without another word to the tribe, he began walking toward the inner cave.

No one blocked him.

Even those who bristled earlier found their bodies unwilling to move in opposition.

The silver bear watched him go but did not interfere he understood hierarchy.

He understood power.

Inside, the cave was dimmer. The air held warmth from the central hearth and the layered furs that lined the walls. Voices from deeper chambers were hushed, cautious.

Ash did not ask for direction he did not need it he followed her scent unerringly.

He passed one chamber where older females whispered among themselves. He passed another where cubs were being hushed and pulled close. The tension inside the cave was not hostile.

It was stunned.

They had prepared.

They were still stunned.

Ash reached the chamber where Luna rested the woven curtain covering the entrance stirred slightly as he pushed it aside.

She lay on her side, curled slightly into the furs. One hand rested over the curve of her belly. Her breathing was slow and even for a moment, he simply looked at her.

The sharpness in his posture dissolved.

He stepped closer.

Carefully, he slid one arm beneath her knees and the other behind her back.

He lifted her as though she weighed nothing.

She stirred almost immediately.

Her lashes fluttered. Her brows knit faintly in confusion before recognition washed over her face.

"Ash," she murmured.

His mouth curved.

He lowered his head and pressed his face against her neck, inhaling deeply "I said I would come," he murmured.

She giggled softly, still half asleep, and cupped his face between her hands "You're warm," she said.

"You like that."

"I do."

He kissed her cheek. Her temple. The corner of her mouth. Slow, deliberate kisses that lingered just enough to make her smile widen.

Her fingers slid into his hair, holding him close.

Behind them, two figures stood rigid near the chamber wall.

Alo had arrived first.

Theo stood beside him.

Neither had announced themselves.

They had entered the moment they sensed the shift in air and Luna's waking scent.

Now they watched.

Alo's shoulders were tight.

Theo's expression was controlled but sharp.

Ash felt them without turning.

He lifted his head slightly and met their gaze.

Silence stretched between the three males.

There was no need for words.

Rank was clear.

Power was obvious.

Ash's presence filled the small chamber easily. It did not strain. It did not flex.

It simply was.

Theo straightened.

Alo exhaled slowly through his nose.

They stood down.

Not out of fear.

Out of understanding.

Luna glanced between them, amusement flickering across her face "You're all glaring again," she said.

"We are not glaring," Theo replied.

"You are."

Ash shifted her slightly higher in his arms, securing his hold around her back "She smells tired," he observed quietly.

"I am not tired," Luna protested weakly.

"You were napping," Alo pointed out.

She frowned at him. "That was strategic resting."

Ash huffed a quiet breath of laughter against her hair he pressed another kiss to her mouth, longer this time. She leaned into it without hesitation.

Theo's jaw tightened briefly before he forced it to relax.

The tension in the room was not explosive.

It was possessive.

Protective.

Ash pulled back just enough to rest his forehead against Luna's "I could feel you," he said softly.

She smiled. "I knew you would."

He glanced briefly at her stomach, his expression shifting with something deeper. Reverent.

Outside the chamber, the tribe buzzed in low, urgent conversation.

Word was spreading quickly.

The Dragon had arrived.

Inside, the air felt different.

Heavier.

Safer.

Alo finally stepped forward a single pace. "It only took you two days."

Ash's eyes flicked to him. "I said I would come."

Theo crossed his arms. "The tribe is unsettled."

"They will adjust."

There was no arrogance in the statement.

Just certainty.

Luna tugged gently at Ash's hair until he looked at her again "You caused a scene," she said lightly.

"They needed reassurance."

"With jewels."

"Yes."

She shook her head, smiling.

From the entrance of the chamber, the silver eyed bear appeared briefly. He did not intrude fully.

He observed.

Ash met his gaze once more.

A silent exchange passed between them.

The silver bear inclined his head slightly.

Acknowledgment.

Respect.

Then he withdrew.

The tribe would not challenge what they had just witnessed they had prepared for his arrival.

They had still been stunned.

Now they were adapting.

Inside the chamber, Luna shifted in Ash's arms and sighed contentedly "You smell like smoke and sky," she murmured.

"You smell like home," he replied.

Theo looked away at that.

Alo's fingers flexed once at his side.

They would always be protective.

They would always bristle.

But they understood something fundamental.

In rank.

Ash stood above them.

And for now, that meant Luna was safer than she had ever been.
