Chapter 48 - Chapter 49 Extortion Letter

Miss Elizabeth Swann was in a very bad mood at the moment.

She was locked in a small storage room next to the Captain's Cabin.

Although Roger kept his promise and didn't make her live with those stinky pirates, this small room wasn't much better.

The space was cramped, and the air was filled with a strange smell of dried fish mixed with tar.

What she found most unbearable was that she was actually forced to scrub that damned velvet toilet!

Just thinking about herself, a noble Governor's daughter, reduced to such menial work, Elizabeth trembled with anger.

She swore that when Commodore Norrington arrived with the fleet, she would personally watch that bastard pirate named Roger be hanged on the tallest gallows!

Just as she was gritting her teeth and cursing Roger, the door to the storage room opened.

Gibbs's face, with its eye patch, peered in.

"Miss Swann, our Captain requests your presence."

Gibbs tried to make his tone sound as polite as possible.

"Hmph! What does that ruffian want now?" Elizabeth said grumpily.

"Uh... I don't know either." Gibbs scratched his head.

"But I advise you to cooperate; our Captain's temper... sometimes isn't very good."

Elizabeth, of course, knew Roger had a bad temper.

What kind of good temper could a man have who, at the slightest disagreement, pressed her against the railing, violently snatched her necklace, and even forced her to scrub a toilet?

Although she was a hundred times unwilling, she still stood up and followed Gibbs into the Captain's Cabin.

Inside the Captain's Cabin, the group of pirates who had been feasting were gone.

Only Roger was there, sitting in the large Captain's chair, holding a quill pen and writing something on a piece of parchment.

"Miss Swann, please sit." Roger said without lifting his head.

Elizabeth glanced at the chair next to her, clearly prepared for her, and snorted, remaining standing.

"I have nothing to say to a pirate like you."

"Is that so?" Roger finally finished writing the last word.

He looked up, blew on the parchment in his hand, and then handed it to Elizabeth.

"I was going to ask you to look over this letter I wrote to your father, to see if the wording was appropriate."

"After all, it's my first time writing a ransom note, so I don't have much experience."

Ransom note?!

Elizabeth was stunned for a moment and subconsciously took the parchment.

With just one glance, her eyes widened.

"To the esteemed Governor of Port Royal, Mr. Weatherby Swann:"

"Your beautiful and captivating daughter, Miss Elizabeth Swann, a pearl of the Caribbean Sea, is currently a guest on my ship."

"She is doing well, scrubbing toilets daily, eating fresh salted fish, and has a group of dirty little pirates to play with her, so please do not worry."

"To express my fondness for Miss Swann and my respect for Your Excellency the Governor, I have decided to give her an opportunity to return to you."

"Please prepare ten thousand gold coins as her ticket home."

"Remember, I only want gold coins, including Spanish, British, and French gold coins; I want them all."

"But I do not want silver coins, nor those gaudy jewels; they are difficult to divide."

"Within three days, deliver the gold coins to my messenger."

"If after three days I do not see the gold coins, or if I see Royal Navy ships, then I cannot guarantee that Miss Swann will have the chance to see the sun rise the next day."

At the end of the letter, a crooked, spread-winged albatross was drawn in ink.

Elizabeth trembled with rage after reading the letter.

This... this was no ransom note!

This was simply a blatant letter of humiliation!

What did he mean by'scrubbing toilets daily'?

What did he mean by 'fresh salted fish'?

What did he mean by 'a group of pirates to play with her'?

And, ten thousand gold coins?!

Why doesn't he just rob someone?!

Oh, he was already robbing someone.

"You... you lunatic!"

"Do you know! You are declaring war on the entire Royal Navy!"

Elizabeth pointed at the letter, her voice trembling.

"Ten thousand gold coins, my father can't possibly come up with that!"

"You're forcing him to his death!"

Roger shrugged, looking indifferent.

"Whether he can come up with it or not, that's not my problem to consider."

"That's something your father, the Governor of Port Royal, should be worrying about."

"I believe, for his beloved daughter, a mere ten thousand gold coins shouldn't be a problem."
