Chapter 14 - The Path Beneath

Meanwhile a subic, the survivors gathered in a loose circle, the ruins of Subic towering around them like jagged tombstones. The sea air was thick with salt, but it carried something else too—possibility.

Zen scanned the group. Nurses huddled together, whispering. The four young students sat against a cracked wall, exhaustion written in their faces. The police stood at attention even though their eyes betrayed fatigue.

Paulo, tall and broad-shouldered, lingered at the edge of the group, his hand resting protectively with his wife Dra. Mae.

Zen lifted his rifle, slinging it over his shoulder, then spoke firmly:

"Anthony, open the supply crate. Hand out weapons. Everyone here who can fight—we need you armed and ready."

Anthony popped the latch and began pulling rifles, pistols, and spare magazines from their stash. He handed the first to Engr. Paulo, who accepted it with surprising ease. His grip was steady, professional.

"You've held a rifle before," Anthony noted.

Engr. Paulo gave a faint, grim smile. "Once upon a time. Security contractor, then engineering." He loaded the rifle with practiced hands. "Bullets ran out months ago. Feels good to hold one with firepower again."

Zen nodded approvingly. "Good. You'll need it."

"Give one also to my wife," Engr Paulo requested. "She was a shooting champion before," he added. Anthony gave a pistol to Dra.

Mae and some extra bullets.

Anthony passed more rifles and magazines to Edrian and his fellow policemen. The officers checked the chambers with quick efficiency, their relief palpable as they cradled real weapons again.

Edrian met Zen's eyes. "We'll cover you. No hesitation."

"Then cover each other too," Zen said firmly. "No heroics. We win by staying alive."

When Anthony gave a pistol with Vic but rejects it and said "I only handle make up's," which makes the group smile.

Then Rizz takes the pistol and said let me have it. Anthony was surprise and look at Zen which he approves. "Don't hurt yourself young lady," Anthony said to Rizz. "No worries. I knew how to use this," was her simply reply.

The Hidden Path

As weapons were distributed, Engr. Paulo stepped closer to Zen, lowering his voice. "Commander… I know a way in."

Zen tilted his head. "Into the bunker?"

Paulo nodded. "When I was still working construction, we built more than just the main gates. There are maintenance shafts. Ventilation, cooling systems, hidden pathways for servicing the air conditioners. Small, but wide enough for three men to crawl through. It leads straight into the secondary control room."

Anthony's brows shot up. "And you're only telling us this now?"

Paulo shrugged. "Because I wasn't sure until I saw the structure. But yes… I know where the access point should be."

Zen's eyes sharpened, a flicker of hope sparking. "Show me."

Turning to the group, he gave orders crisply:

"Anthony, you take command here. Gave granades to Edrian, and keep everyone sharp."

"Joey, Gino and the police hold the perimeter. Nothing gets past. If drones appear, hold until we're back."

"Nalren, you're with me. Rngr. Paulo leads the way. We find that passage."

Anthony gave a mock salute. "Copy that. Don't get stuck in a vent, boss."

Zen allowed a faint smirk before his face hardened again. "Keep them safe, Anthony. If we fail, they'll need you more than me."

Anthony's jaw clenched but he nodded. "I'll keep them breathing."

When Zen together with Nalren and Engr . Paulo left the group, Rizz follow them with her eyes and wisper, "be careful Doc."

Into the Vents

The three men broke away, Engr. Paulo leading with a flashlight. They crossed a collapsed courtyard, climbed over rusted girders, and squeezed past rubble until they reached the back of a decaying warehouse.

Engr.Paulo crouched beside a wall half-swallowed by vines and stone. He brushed away debris, revealing a steel grate bolted into the concrete.

"There," he said, tapping it. "Air-conditioning intake. Leads to the guts of the facility."

Zen ran his hand along the cold metal. "Looks untouched."

Nalren crouched beside him, already pulling tools from his pack. "Give me two minutes."

Sparks flew as Nalren worked. His hands were steady, eyes narrowed in concentration. Finally, the grate screeched loose. A gust of stale, cold air rushed out, carrying the scent of rust and dust.

Engr. Paulo lifted the grate away and peered inside. The tunnel yawned dark and narrow, just wide enough for a man to crawl.

"Not comfortable," he muttered, "but it'll get us in."

Zen adjusted his rifle strap and nodded. "Lead the way. Nalren, you're second. I'll cover from the rear."

Perimeter Watch

Back at the Subic camp perimeter, Anthony paced slowly, checking sightlines. The survivors looked more alive now with weapons in their hands, even if their hands shook.

Rizz sat on a broken wall, hugging her knees, her eyes flicking often toward the direction Zen had gone. Vic, Maricar and Ruth huddled close, whispering nervously.

Edrian and his men stood like statues, rifles at the ready, though their eyes betrayed the weight of responsibility.

Anthony paused near Rizz. "He'll come back," he said, his tone softer than usual.

Rizz startled slightly, then frowned. "I didn't ask."

Anthony smirked faintly. "Didn't need to. The way you keep staring after him says it all."

Rizz flushed, turning away sharply.

Maricar held her best friend Rizz hands and ask "what's the problem?"

"I knew him... I knew Zen. He is a very good person. We we're online friends before. He supported me so much and gave advices. Then one day he opened his heart to me that he love me but I reject it... because I was still young that time. Inspite of it he never leaves me., I needed help badly he is the only one who help me. I ask him why? He told me he loves me so much and he wanted to feel the pain till he lost Then he disappreared after I... broke his heart," with so much sadness in Rizz eye. He's… different. Not like the others we lost. He feels like… hope."

Anthony's smirk faded. He understood. Hope was dangerous, but it was also what kept people moving.

He looked back toward the shadows where Zen had vanished. "Yeah," he said quietly. "That's exactly who he is."

The Crawl

Inside the vent, every scrape of their knees echoed like thunder. The metal walls were slick with condensation, the air heavy and stale.

Paulo led, muttering directions as he crawled. "Left fork ahead. Leads down to the cooling chamber. From there, ladder up to the control access."

Nalren grunted. "Remind me to never complain about trenches again."

Zen crawled in silence, his mind focused, but his heart hammering with the weight of responsibility. Behind him, families waited. Survivors clung to life because of decisions he made. And ahead… ahead could be salvation—or damnation.

At last, Paulo stopped, shining his light on a vertical shaft. A steel ladder vanished upward into darkness.

"There," he whispered. "That should bring us right behind the secondary control."

Zen nodded. "Then let's see what this bunker is hiding."

One by one, they began to climb.
