Chapter 31 - Final Chapter: Where Nothing Chases You

Haru had no intention of going anywhere.

He simply left… because the room had grown smaller than his thoughts.

The street was unusually quiet.

People passed by him — some looked, others quickly lowered their eyes.

Faces… familiar ones.

Faces that once feared him.

Faces that once mocked him.

One of them approached.

He stopped in front of Haru and bowed slightly.

"I'm… sorry."

Then another.

And another.

Apologies came one after another, as if time itself was trying — far too late — to correct its mistakes.

Haru felt no anger.

Nor joy.

He only noticed something strange…

Their faces.

They resembled the monsters he had once fought inside that long dream.

And in that moment, he understood.

He had never truly been fighting them…

but what lived inside them — and inside himself.

He kept walking.

Until someone passed beside him.

A familiar jacket…

different colors, yet the same presence.

Haru stopped.

The person did not look at him.

He simply continued walking calmly.

In that brief instant, Haru realized the truth.

Fear.

The creature that had always fled from him…

was no longer running.

Tears fell without permission.

He did not know whether they came from relief…

or from finally understanding.

He left the street behind without noticing.

He walked… and walked…

until he reached a place he had not chosen.

A vast field.

Purple flowers stretching endlessly toward the horizon.

The air felt light… as though it refused to disturb anyone.

Haru stood there for a long time.

Then, with the hesitation of a child who has never known safety…

he sat down.

And slowly, he lay back among the flowers.

They did not hurt him.

They did not vanish.

They simply held him.

He closed his eyes.

He waited for a dream.

A memory.

A voice.

But…

nothing came.

For the first time in a very long time…

nothing was chasing him.

His breathing slowed.

Softer.

Gentler.

A single violet petal drifted down and landed on his chest.

It glowed faintly for a moment… then dimmed.

Haru fell asleep.

In true peace.

Seconds of silence passed.

The flowers around him moved slowly.

All of them bent in one direction…

toward him.

As if the world itself…

had finally stopped resisting him.

For the first time… Haru was not dreaming.

— The End —

Final Shot (the very last frame):

After a long moment of absolute stillness,

a single leg appeared in the far left edge of the frame.

A simple black shoe, old yet clean, standing right beside Haru's motionless body.

Then, slowly, a small portion of an arm came into view — the sleeve of a long green jacket.

The exact same green jacket Haru had worn throughout his entire journey.

In that hand… the same axe.

The very axe he had carried through every inner battle.

The figure did not move.

Did not take a single step forward.

No face appeared. No shoulders. No chest.

It simply stood there…

beside the one who had finally stopped breathing.

The wind stirred once more,

carrying a single violet petal…

it brushed past the black shoe and the green sleeve…

then vanished into the horizon.

The camera slowly pulled back.

The image widened…

flowers… field… purple sky…

until all color gradually faded.

The screen became completely black.

No sound.

No music.

Only… silence.
