The door shut behind me with a dull thud, the sound echoing through the apartment like it was too loud for such a small space.

I stood there for a second longer than necessary, keys still dangling from my fingers, heels still on, coat still clinging to my shoulders like it didn't want to let me go. The silence hit differently here. At work, silence was sharp, expectant. Here, it was heavy. Soft. Smothering.

I exhaled.

A long, tired sigh slipped out of me before I even realized I was holding my breath.

I dropped my bag by the door. It landed with a quiet thump, collapsing in on itself like it was just as exhausted as I was. My shoes followed, kicked off carelessly, one skidding farther than the other. I didn't bother fixing it.
