"The CEOs are demanding for you."
For a moment, I genuinely thought my brain misfired.
Like I heard the words, but they didn't land. They just floated there in the air between us, light and harmless, like they weren't capable of ruining my peace in under three seconds.
Then my fingers froze over the file in front of me.
Completely still.
Mid-movement.
Like someone hit pause on my body while my mind kept running.
"What?" I asked slowly, lifting my head, my voice dragging slightly like I was waking from something heavy. "Wait… what did you just say?"
Rose blinked at me.
Not confused. Just mildly surprised.
Like she expected sass. A joke. Maybe a dramatic sigh and an eye roll. Not this… stillness.
"You're needed in the executive room," she repeated, softer this time, like adjusting her tone might make the words easier to swallow.
The executive room.
And there it was.
That drop.
