Chapter 19 - What is Rose Hiding?

Scene — Outer Roads

"Sister… where are you…"

His breath tore out of him as he ran through the dim forest path. Branches scraped against his cloak. His vision blurred.

"I'm sorry," he whispered. "Sorry for not coming sooner."

His hands trembled.

"Just… stay alive."

Then his pace slowed.

Aethelgard.

The Colosseum.

If the world was gathering—

Information would gather with it.

Power would gather with it.

"If I can't find her alone…" he muttered, jaw tightening, "then I'll force the world to look."

The fighters had already been announced.

Only one authority could change that.

And he knew her.

Scene — Palace Chamber

The door closed with a soft, final sound.

Silence lingered.

Rose stood alone in the dim chamber, hands resting against the cold stone table. The Beacon's pulse echoed faintly through the walls—steady, distant, indifferent.

She did not look shaken.

She did not look afraid.

But her fingers were trembling.

Footsteps approached.

She didn't turn.

"Did you find him?" she asked.

A pause.

The boy who had begged her earlier now stood straighter. His voice was no longer breaking.

Itsuki.

Itsuki lowered his gaze.

"That person…" he said quietly, "lived as a hero."

Rose's eyes shifted slightly.

"And now?"

"He disappeared," Itsuki replied. "As if he never existed."

Silence.

"I searched the capital. The outskirts. The underground routes." His jaw tightened. "Even beyond the mapped regions."

"Nothing?" Rose asked.

"Not even a trace."

The Beacon pulsed once.

Rose closed her eyes briefly.

"So he erased himself," she murmured.

Itsuki's expression darkened. "No records. No mana residue. No spatial distortion. It's like reality adjusted to remove him."

That made her fingers press harder against the stone.

Not panic.

Recognition.

"I see," she whispered.

Itsuki stepped forward slightly. "Your Majesty… about the battle—"

"You'll survive," Rose said calmly.

He froze.

There was no doubt in her voice.

No comfort either.

"I wouldn't have allowed it otherwise."

Itsuki's fists tightened.

Not fear.

Resolve.

Rose finally turned to face him.

Her expression was composed.

Imperial.

"And if you encounter the masked man," she continued softly, "do not hesitate."

Itsuki's eyes sharpened.

"Understood."

A beat of silence passed between them.

Then Rose asked quietly,

"Tell me one thing."

Itsuki lifted his head.

"When you searched… did you feel watched?"

He hesitated.

"…Yes."

The Beacon pulsed again.

Slow.

Heavy.

Rose exhaled softly.

"So it's moving again."

Itsuki didn't ask what "it" was.

He already knew better than to.

"Prepare yourself," Rose said.

"For the battle?"

"For what comes after."

Itsuki bowed once.

Deep.

Then left.

The chamber fell silent again.

Rose stared at her reflection in the polished stone.

The Empress looked calm.

Her eyes were not.

Somewhere beyond maps.

Beyond memory.

Something that once wore the title of hero…

was still watching.

"You believe entering the Colosseum will help you find her?"Rose Say

"It will force movement," he said. "It will force attention. Whoever touched her won't ignore me."

That was logical.

Strategic.

Dangerous.

Rose exhaled slowly.

"Replacing a fighter two days before the arena destabilizes politics."

"I don't care."

"I do."

A long pause.

Then—

"I will not remove a chosen fighter," she said.

His shoulders stiffened.

"But," she continued, "I can invoke Clause Seven."

His eyes lifted.

"A provisional challenger slot," Rose said. "Unranked. Unrewarded. You will fight outside the formal bracket."

A dangerous solution.

But legal.

"Itsuki," she said firmly, "if you step into that arena, you represent no Kingdom."

"I understand."

"You will not use the tournament for vengeance."

A pause.

"…I will use it for truth."

Rose studied him for several seconds.

Then nodded once.

"Prepare."

He bowed—not in desperation.

In gratitude.

After He Leaves

The chamber door closed.

The Beacon pulsed distantly in the walls.

Rose remained still.

"…Clause Seven," she murmured.

A law meant for anomalies.

She pressed her hand against the cold quartz table.

Not again.

The memory flickered.

A classified report.

A missing anomaly.

A pattern she had hoped ended three years ago.

The Beacon pulsed once more.

Steady.

Uncaring.

"It's moving again," she whispered.

She straightened.

The Empress returned.

But doubt remained.

Scene Shift — Village on the Edge

Shura, Zenkyou, Orin, Yura, and Ren arrived at dusk.

The village was silent.

Not peaceful.

Strained.

Then they heard screaming.

A boy sat in the dirt, nails digging into his own arms, eyes unfocused.

"I see it!" he shrieked. "I SEE PAST IT! I KNOW THE END!"

Yura stiffened. "That's not normal."

His parents stood nearby, exhausted.

"He started after sunset," his mother said weakly. "He says something is whispering."

Orin crouched slowly, studying the boy's pupils.

They were dilated unevenly.

"Do you hear something?" Orin asked calmly.

The boy laughed violently.

"It knows you're here."

The air shifted.

Zenkyou's expression darkened.

"This isn't illness."

Ren's hand rested on his sword.

"Possession?" Yura asked quietly.

Orin shook his head slowly.

"No."

He looked toward the horizon.

"It feels… external."

The boy suddenly stopped laughing.

His head snapped toward the Deep ceiling.

And for one split second—

His voice changed.

"It watches the arena too."

Then he collapsed.

Silence.

Heavy.

Shura's smile was gone.

"Take him to the hospital," he said quietly.

They lifted him carefully.

As they stepped outside—

Village children still approached them.

Still laughed.

Still tugged at Shura's sleeves.

Life refusing to stop.

Shura forced a small smile.

Yura tried to lighten the air.

Ren and Zenkyou watched the horizon.

Orin didn't smile at all.

Because something had just confirmed it.

The Colosseum was not just spectacle.

It was bait.

And something in the Deep had started paying attention.

Chapter End

Laughter echoed in the village.

But beneath it—

Whispers moved.

The world was gathering in Aethelgard.

And something unseen was counting.
