Chapter 18 - I Figured

It hit me all at once.

I was halfway down the corridor when I realized I had not replied to my dad's last message.

I stopped and pulled my phone out.

His name sat there.

I typed before I could talk myself out of it.

Hi Daddy. Sorry I am just seeing this now. Today got really hectic.

The reply came almost immediately.

Hey my girl. I figured.

Is your phone all fixed now?

I exhaled.

Yeah. It is back.

Thought so. I was guessing practice swallowed you whole.

I smiled.

It did. It was good.

That makes me happy.

I should be home soon. Tell Liam to get the car ready. I do not trust him to remember unless he is reminded.

I laughed under my breath.

I will.

The bell rang then. I slipped my phone into my bag and stepped back into the current of bodies moving toward the stairs.

Someone bumped into me.

Sorry, he said, stepping back.

It is okay.

He hesitated. You have a nice smile.

Oh. Thanks.

He nodded and moved on.

I stood there a second longer than I needed to.

That was when I noticed Akari.

He was a few steps away, phone in hand. When he looked up and saw me, his smile came late.

Then he turned down another hallway.

I did not call after him.

At home, the house sounded lived in. Aisling's voice carried from the living room. A cupboard closed upstairs.

I dropped my bag in my room and sat on the bed, phone still in my hand.

Dad was coming home.

Practice was real.

The day had already happened.

I set my phone down and lay back.
