Chapter 59 - Bearable

Lucian's POV...

I left immediately.

Not the building. Just the stupid conference room. The voices. Her.

My footsteps echoed down the corridor—sharp, quick, desperate. I didn't know where I was going. Didn't care. Anywhere but there. Anywhere but those faces. Anywhere but the memory of her standing in that doorway, confused, kissed on the cheek, abandoned.

I found an old office—one of the directors. The nameplate on the door meant nothing to me.

Some man.Some soul I'd hired years ago and forgotten.

I pushed the door open without knocking.

"Mr. Lucian... sir?"

He shot up from his chair like I'd set him on fire. His eyes went wide. His hands trembled. He bowed so fast I thought he might crack his skull on the desk.

"Sir? Is everything alright? Do you need something? I can get coffee, documents, whatever you—"

"I'll be taking your office today."

My voice was flat. Dead. The voice I use when there's nothing left to feel.

"Yes, sir. Of course, sir. Whatever you need, sir."
