Chapter 54 - Chapter 54: Clarity of Will

Aside from Hermione, who couldn't exactly help her physical limitations, everyone's eyes followed Basil's words and landed on her fuzzy little head.

Then, they all looked at the mess splattered on the wall.

"Mr. Granger, I..." Professor McGonagall's face was filled with shame.

Snape looked at Harry's stupid face and wanted to make a snide remark.

But looking at Basil and Hermione—a perfect pair in his eyes—and the corpse of the Troll that had nearly barged into his office...

He kept his mouth shut.

Only the culprit behind all this—Quirrell, who had used the opportunity to figure out everything about the room in the third-floor corridor and what lay beneath the trapdoor—could offer an evaluation as an outsider.

"The children must be terrified. Let them go back first. The students are all enjoying the Halloween feast in their common rooms."

Professor McGonagall nodded repeatedly, her eyes full of concern. "Quirinus, you're right. You all should go back. Oh, and for eliminating a hidden danger to the school and saving a fellow student... 50 points to Gryffindor!"

Snape finally couldn't help himself. "50 points? Mr. Granger certainly did well. But entering the girls' bathroom? Although I'm sure this was Potter's idea... they still committed a minor infraction. I think, shouldn't we deduct 10 points? I mean, 5 points each from Potter and Weasley."

"We were just bringing food!" Ron complained indignantly.

"Who eats in a bathroom?" Snape retorted without thinking.

Ron grinned, opened his pocket, and revealed the meat pies and the pumpkin juice in the potion bottle.

He also waved the half-eaten chicken leg.

Snape stared deathly at the potion bottle.

He was so angry he couldn't speak.

He hadn't expected someone would actually dare use a potion bottle for a drink!

"Enough, Severus," said Dumbledore, stepping out from around the corner. "I see no reason to deduct points from these children."

After speaking, he even winked at Basil and the other three.

Basil just wanted to throw up.

But the other three looked at Dumbledore with gratitude.

Until they had almost climbed to the eighth floor and returned to the common room, they were still filled with thanks for Dumbledore.

That old fox!

If Basil hadn't been able to see everything happening in the Headmaster's office...

And known the original plot...

He probably wouldn't have known Dumbledore was watching from behind the scenes, testing him.

When Dumbledore appeared just now, he hadn't given Basil a second glance.

He even ignored the light-resistant Devil's Snare.

He acted completely incurious about the student's secrets, showing full respect.

But in reality, it was because he already knew.

Through so-called coincidences, he had let them be exposed to him.

However, Basil didn't have time to complain about Dumbledore right now.

What he urgently needed was to review everything that had just happened.

Power outside your control, outside your understanding, is not truly your power.

Just like how Harry could have bursts of power against Voldemort, but later couldn't even cast a complete spell when dueling Snape.

As for Harry, Ron, and Hermione...

After experiencing being trapped by a sixteen-foot Troll and witnessing Basil blow its head off, the atmosphere between the three of them had become much friendlier.

They led the distracted Basil to the portrait of the Fat Lady.

"Pig snout."

After saying the password, they crawled in.

The common room was packed and noisy.

Everyone was eating the food that had been sent up.

The three of them smiled at each other and pounced on their plates.

Except everyone carefully avoided the meat dishes.

Also, Hermione grabbed two plates.

First, she piled one high with food for Basil.

While enjoying the five-star service provided by Hermione, Basil started a conversation with Riddle in his mind.

"So, I hid the Killing Curse within a Basic Attack? And because of the Red Dragon power from [Dragon Knight], it didn't show? But I clearly didn't chant, nor did I recite it silently. That means it wasn't a Non-Verbal Spell either. This doesn't fit the logic of how a spell is born at all!"

"Something like that. Let me give you a hint: Where do spells come from?"

"Where do they come from?"

"My Lord, in fact, the 'Intent' Flitwick mentioned is the source of all spells. When your heart is filled with a floating sensation, your Magic Field carries that will, and things around you float up; when your heart is cheering with joy, the happiness in your heart spreads..."

"You mean—"

"When your heart is filled with Killing Intent, your Magic Field is also saturated with it, creating the corresponding phenomenon. Just like the supernatural phenomena young wizards create before they have wands—without the need for wands, incantations, or other standard mandatory steps."

"Then why do we still learn spells? Do wands limit us?"

"No, a wand is an amplifier and a stabilizer. It stabilizes our own chaotic Magic Fields, allowing us to grow faster. Our fields and the wand's field grind against each other and grow through repeated casting."

"Then why? I remember you could use power consciously even before you had a wand, right?"

"Yes. Premature mental maturity tends to stabilize the Magic Field. At that point, you only need a tiny bit of talent to create supernatural phenomena through will. But even I could only make a rabbit hang itself from the rafters or create invisible shields to win in a fistfight. But to do that requires extremely high demands on the will. To do what you did, embedding the power of [Killing Intent] within the field... even I couldn't do that."

"Even you couldn't do it? How is that possible? You mean you at this current age?" Basil was incredulous.

When it came to the Killing Curse, he couldn't think of anyone more skilled than Voldemort.

In the original books, what took Voldemort's life was his own Killing Curse rebounding.

"To create phenomena without a wand, incantation, wand movement, or gestures requires an extremely clear, pure, and powerful intent. A child's world is simple. Their intent is also relatively clean. Thus, it's easier to break away from standard steps and create supernatural phenomena. And me? I was too eager for success. I didn't polish myself in the introductory stage like you. I relied directly on talent to force myself to learn the Killing Curse. The reason 'my' Killing Curse is so strong is because 'I' killed myself multiple times—splitting the soul to make Horcruxes, and undergoing magical transformations close to death."

"So, my Killing Intent just now was clear enough to meet the requirements for a wandless, incantation-less Killing Curse? So much so that in a [Basic Attack]... wait, Dumbledore won't discover this, will he?"

"No. The Killing Curse is just one form, a framework, for using Killing Intent. It relies on Killing Intent to directly attack the Health Bar. Your [Basic Attack] combined with [Killing Intent]. The [Killing Intent] directly increased the damage, becoming the source of the [Dragon Knight]'s fiery explosive power. In fact, you can infuse this power into any spell. Just like how any of Dumbledore's spells are filled with his compassionate, saint-like high-minded intent. It's just that [Killing Intent] is probably more suitable for offensive spells. If used on a defensive spell, it would likely be twice the effort for half the result."

"I know. This is the 'power of ignorance' you mentioned before. Are you warning me to use the corresponding, appropriate Intent when using a spell?"

"Not entirely. I just want to tell you that sometimes, being a little slower might be better. Just like you learning the Killing Curse."

"That doesn't sound like a conclusion Voldemort would reach."

"Knowledge from Salazar Slytherin's manuscripts. I simply picked it up while teaching you."
