Chapter 14 - Chapter 14 — The Body Remembers First

Month: Late April

Year: Taishō 13

Age: Akira — 7

Location: Azabu District (clinic, residential paths, dawn clearing)

Combat Strength: ★★½☆☆ → ★★½☆☆ (stability refined)

---

The morning air had softened.

Late April carried warmth without weight, the kind that lingered on skin instead of biting it. Akira stood in the clearing before dawn, barefoot on cool earth, eyes half-lidded.

No sword yet.

Just breathing.

In through the nose—slow.

Down, not up.

The breath filled his abdomen, expanded his back.

Hold—just long enough.

Out through the mouth, controlled, silent.

> "Breathing efficiency increased. Heart rate stable. Oxygen utilization improving."

Akira didn't respond.

He placed one hand lightly over his stomach, feeling the motion.

This was not Hinokami Kagura.

This was not Sun Breathing.

This was preparation—the kind Youriichi had once done without knowing it would become legend.

When his breathing settled, Akira picked up the practice sword.

One form.

Not fast.

Not powerful.

Just correct.

The blade traced the air as the sun's first light crested the horizon.

---

Later that day, the clinic was crowded.

Spring sickness had come—not severe, but persistent. Fevers that lingered. Coughs that refused to clear. Children tired more easily.

Akira moved quietly between tasks—fetching water, grinding herbs, steadying patients while the doctor worked.

One boy struggled to breathe through a coughing fit, panic rising faster than the illness.

"Slow," Akira said gently, kneeling beside him. "Look at me."

The boy's eyes darted, unfocused.

"Breathe with me," Akira continued—not commanding, not teaching. Just sharing.

In.

Out.

The boy followed without thinking.

His shoulders lowered.

The coughing eased.

The doctor glanced over sharply—but said nothing.

Later, while washing his hands, the doctor spoke.

"You didn't tell him how to breathe," he said.

Akira shook his head. "I just breathed."

The doctor studied him for a long moment.

"…That's often better."

Akira felt something click inside.

Breathing wasn't just for fighting.

It was for living.

> "Connection established: controlled breathing improves medical intervention outcomes."

"I know," Akira whispered internally.

---

Mitsuri felt restless again.

Not unhappy.

Just… unsettled.

That afternoon, while alone in the yard, she found herself moving without thinking.

One step.

A turn.

Her arms followed—not stiff, not precise.

Loose.

Flowing.

She stopped suddenly, heart pounding.

"…What was that?"

She tried again.

This time, she added a breath.

In—

Out—

Her body swayed naturally, like silk caught in wind.

It felt right.

She laughed softly, embarrassed even though no one was watching.

"I'm being silly," she murmured.

But the feeling stayed.

---

That evening, Mitsuri joined Akira on the path home.

She watched him walk—steady, balanced, unhurried.

"…Akira," she said, "do you ever feel like your body knows something you don't?"

He considered.

"…Yes," he said. "Most of the time."

She smiled, relieved. "Good. I thought I was strange."

Akira glanced at her.

> "Physiological observation: Mitsuri Kanroji displays abnormal muscle elasticity and joint flexibility. Potential latent trait detected."

He said nothing.

Not because he was hiding it—

But because it wasn't his place.

---

That night, Mitsuri ate more than usual.

She was hungry—really hungry.

Her mother noticed. "You're growing again, aren't you?"

Mitsuri nodded, cheeks full. "I think so!"

She slept deeply.

Dreamed of colors moving through air.

---

Before dawn, Akira returned to the clearing.

Breathing first.

Sword second.

Always in that order now.

> "Sun Breathing reconstruction remains theoretical. Current body adapting successfully."

He lowered the sword as the sun rose.

Akira didn't feel stronger.

He felt ready.

And somewhere nearby, without realizing it, a girl's body was learning how to move like a ribbon—long before she would ever name it.
