Chapter 71 - Chapter 70 – When the Sun Returned

Timeline: Four years before the main story

Age: Akira — 16

Location: Ubuyashiki Estate

POV: Split (Akira / Hashira)

---

Akira

The stone beneath his knees was cold.

Akira knelt straight-backed in the inner courtyard of the Ubuyashiki estate, hands resting calmly on his thighs. His uniform was clean but worn — not ceremonial, not new. Bandages were hidden beneath the fabric, stitched wounds still warm.

He did not feel young.

He felt… finished.

Before him stood the Hashira.

Not idols.

Not heroes.

Survivors.

---

Those Present

Gyomei Himejima — Stone

Giyu Tomioka — Water

Sanemi Shinazugawa — Wind

Tengen Uzui — Sound

Shinjuro Rengoku — Flame

Kanae Kocho — Flower (alive)

Akira kept his gaze lowered, but his breathing never changed.

Total Concentration: Constant.

Not forced.

Not displayed.

Simply there.

---

Kagaya Ubuyashiki

"You entered an Upper Rank battlefield without orders," Kagaya said softly.

No anger.

No judgment.

"You fought Upper Moon Two alone."

The air tightened.

"You killed forty-five demons," Kagaya continued. "And you prevented the death of Kanae Kocho."

Akira bowed his head a fraction deeper.

"I acted because delay meant death."

Kanae's fingers curled slightly in her sleeves.

---

"The Corps' formal requirement for Hashira rank is fifty demon kills," Kagaya said.

Silence.

Akira did not speak.

Then Kagaya smiled — gentle, tired, unbreakable.

"Rules exist to guide us," he said, "not to deny truth."

He raised his voice, just enough.

"Akira. I acknowledge you as Sun Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps."

The title settled like gravity.

---

Reactions

Gyomei Himejima

Prayer beads trembled.

"…So young," Gyomei whispered, tears flowing freely.

"And already bearing the breath closest to the divine."

He pressed his palms together and bowed deeply.

"May your light endure longer than ours."

---

Giyu Tomioka

Giyu said nothing at first.

His eyes never left Akira.

"…So this is the origin," he murmured finally.

Water had met the source.

---

Sanemi Shinazugawa

Sanemi scoffed sharply.

"Tch."

But his jaw was tight.

"So that wasn't Flame," he muttered.

"…That was something worse."

He did not look away.

---

Tengen Uzui

Tengen let out a low whistle.

"Well, damn," he said. "That explains why the night felt wrong."

He crossed his arms.

"No wasted movement. No excess flair," he added.

"…Terrifyingly unflashy."

For Tengen, that was praise.

---

Shinjuro Rengoku

Shinjuro stepped forward.

His eyes burned — not with anger, but with grief sharpened into reverence.

"So it still exists," he said hoarsely.

"The flame that predates mine."

He bowed deeply.

"Carry it better than we did."

Akira returned the bow — equal depth.

---

Kanae Kocho

Kanae watched him quietly.

She remembered ice closing around her lungs.

A smiling demon.

And the sudden, overwhelming heat that tore the world apart.

"…Sun Breathing," she said softly.

"It doesn't dominate," she continued.

"It corrects."

She bowed.

Alive.

---

The Sun Revealed

Kagaya spoke again.

"If you are willing," he said gently, "demonstrate."

Akira rose.

Pain flared — acknowledged, dismissed.

He stepped into the courtyard and drew his blade.

The air changed.

---

Hinokami Kagura — Clear Blue Sky

No explosion.

No roar.

Just rightness.

Heat moved inward, not outward.

The slash parted the air so cleanly the trees did not sway — yet every Hashira felt it.

Breaths caught.

---

Hinokami Kagura — Fake Rainbow

Akira vanished.

Not speed.

Refraction.

Sunlight bent around him, afterimages splitting like light through glass.

Sanemi swore under his breath.

Giyu's pupils shrank.

Tengen's grin disappeared.

---

Hinokami Kagura — Sun Halo Dragon Head Dance

The blade stopped inches from the stone.

The ground cracked anyway.

Silence followed.

---

Akira's Question

Akira sheathed his sword and knelt once more.

"I have a question," he said calmly.

Every Hashira focused.

"Why do we not employ firearms using wisteria-based toxins," he asked, "or coat blades more aggressively with wisteria poison for suppression and crowd control?"

No arrogance.

No challenge.

Just logic.

Kagaya listened carefully.

For once—

No one interrupted.

Because the Sun Hashira had spoken.
