Timeline: Three years before the main story
Locations: Demon Slayer Corps routes / Butterfly Estate
POV: Split (Mitsuri / Iguro)

Mitsuri
Forest Road — Dusk
The demon didn't even have time to scream.
Mitsuri landed lightly, blade curving in a pink arc before the body collapsed into ash. She exhaled, steady and controlled.
Third mission this month, she thought. No injuries.
Her breathing settled naturally—Total Concentration: Constant, something she'd learned years ago and refined through endless practice.
She cleaned her blade, humming softly.
"Another one?" a voice asked.
Mitsuri turned, smiling brightly.
"Shinobu-chan! Kanae-san!"
The Kocho sisters approached, their movements calm and practiced.
"You're climbing fast," Kanae said gently. "Your reports are… impressive."
Mitsuri laughed, rubbing the back of her head. "Ahh, I just do my best!"
Shinobu's eyes narrowed playfully. "You always say that when you're underselling yourself."

Butterfly Estate — Evening
They sat together on the veranda, tea steaming softly between them.
"Mitsuri," Kanae said after a pause, "you mentioned someone before. The one who inspired you."
Mitsuri froze for half a second.
Then she smiled—soft, almost shy.
"…Yes."
Shinobu leaned forward immediately. "Oh? A crush?"
"Not—! I mean—!" Mitsuri flustered, cheeks pink. She lowered her voice.
"Please don't tell him. Or anyone."
Kanae's expression turned warm and understanding.
"We won't," she promised.
Shinobu tilted her head. "Is he a Demon Slayer?"
"…Yes," Mitsuri admitted. "But he doesn't know I'm here. Or that I've been doing missions."
She clenched her hands in her lap.
"I want to stand beside him as an equal one day. Not someone he has to protect."
Kanae nodded slowly. "That's a strong wish."
Shinobu smirked. "Dangerous too. Secrets have sharp edges."
Mitsuri smiled faintly. "I know. I'll be careful."

Iguro
Training Grounds — Night
Iguro Obanai watched from the shadows.
Mitsuri moved beautifully—fluid, powerful, precise.
Her strength wasn't loud.
It endured.
Every mission report with her name climbed higher. Every return without injury made something twist painfully in his chest.
She's getting farther, he thought. Ahead of me.
He hated that thought.
Not because of pride—
—but because the distance scared him.

Iguro
Later
He approached her cautiously.
"Mitsuri," he said. "Your breathing—has it changed?"
She turned, smiling brightly. "Oh! A little! I've been refining my footwork."
Of course she had.
"You shouldn't push yourself alone," Iguro said quietly.
She blinked. "But… I'm not alone. Everyone here helps."
That wasn't what he meant.
He looked away, jaw tight beneath his bandages.
"…If you need someone on missions," he added stiffly, "I'm available."
Mitsuri's smile softened. "Thank you, Iguro. That means a lot."
She meant it sincerely.
That hurt more than rejection would have.

Iguro
Internal
He watched her walk away.
Her laugh lingered longer than it should have.
I don't want to protect her from behind, he realized suddenly.
I want to stand where she can see me.
The realization settled heavily in his chest.
Love, he understood now, wasn't loud.
It was restraint.
Fear.
And the aching hope that someday—
she might turn around and choose you.
---
Closing
Mitsuri climbed steadily, petals unfolding with each step forward.
Iguro followed carefully, afraid to tread too close—
yet terrified of falling behind.
And somewhere far away,
the Sun remained unaware
that two hearts were quietly orbiting his light.
