A few days later, Caitlyn and Vi conducted a secret investigation into the growing reports of Hextech mass production. When they returned, they found Lady Kiramman waiting in the parlor, her expression unreadable behind a veil of steam rising from her black tea.
"Didn't I tell you not to run around?" Lady Kiramman asked, her tone sharp as a razor. "Do you still want to be Sheriff, Caitlyn?"
"Of course I do!" Caitlyn replied, but she noted the way her mother's fingers trembled slightly on the porcelain cup. "Mother, what are you hiding?"
Lady Kiramman didn't answer directly. Instead, she placed a transfer order on the table.
"Kiramman Caitlyn, transferred to Stillwater Prison. Position: Warden."
Caitlyn's jaw dropped. "Warden? Mom, why? You're sending me away while the city is on the brink of war!"
"The current Warden, Jikegar, is... unwell," Lady Kiramman lied, her voice steady. "And you are suspended. At least at Stillwater, you can be productive until this 'unrest' passes."
Caitlyn didn't see the truth: that the Council was bringing in Jikegar, the ruthless former Captain who had crushed the bridge riots years ago, to lead the new Hextech-armed Enforcer squads. Lady Kiramman was protecting her daughter by exiling her to a fortress on the water, far from the coming slaughter.
Vi, seeing the iron gates of Stillwater once more, covered her face. "Ah! Why am I back in this wretched place? Little Cupcake, tell me I'm dreaming."
"You're my adjutant now, Vi," Caitlyn said, trying to sound official despite her own confusion. "I need someone who knows these halls."
Vi sighed, but she reached out and pinched Caitlyn's cheek. "Fine. Little Cupcake calls the shots."
In Zaun, Chen was reaching a breaking point. Through Boss Fishhead, he had confirmed the worst: Piltover was mass-producing Hextech Rifles.
The industrial disparity was staggering. While Powder was a genius, Zaun lacked the raw materials to produce high-yield ammunition at the same scale as the Piltover Guard. The Wildfire Squad was elite, but they were outnumbered ten to one by regular troops.
"This won't do," Chen gritted his teeth, looking at the "Super Mega Death Rocket" in the corner of the lab. "We need more than one big boom. We need an army that scares them back to their towers."
Jinx, perched on a ceiling beam like a cat, twirled her blue braids. "So, who are we looking for, Chen? More little kids with pink hair?"
Chen looked up, his expression grim. "No. We're going to find Urgot."
Meanwhile, in a hidden laboratory in the Sump, Ekko and Heimerdinger were staring at a fingernail-sized fragment of a primal magic crystal.
"Chen told me that an explosion of this magnitude can trigger a temporal vortex," Ekko said.
Heimerdinger's ears twitched. "My mechanical ancestor! It's true. At Jayce's house years ago, I found traces of chronal residue. If we can harness this... we aren't just talking about science, Ekko. We're talking about the essence of time itself."
They began the experiment. High-voltage current surged through the shard.
POP.
A blinding blue light—the same light that had shattered their lives as children—erupted, turning the crystal into a swirling cloud of iridescent dust. The laboratory suddenly became weightless. Heimerdinger and Ekko floated in the air, drifting toward a captivating blue vortex at the center of the room.
"The temporal vortex," Heimerdinger whispered. "Be careful, Ekko!"
But the pull was too strong. Ekko was sucked into the distortion. He felt a sensation of drowning in air, his vision fracturing into a thousand reflections of himself. He saw his past, his future, and branches of reality that shouldn't exist.
To Ekko, he spent a century in that void. He watched himself grow old; he watched himself being born. He studied the "parallel wires" of time until he understood the circuit.
With a scream of effort, Ekko reached out and "tapped" into one of his reflections. He tore a rift in the fabric of reality and jumped.
Ekko gasped, his lungs burning as he felt the cold floor of the lab beneath him.
"My mechanical ancestor! This might actually be possible!" Heimerdinger's voice rang out beside him.
Ekko froze. The Professor was repeating the exact words he had said before the explosion. The clock on the wall had moved back five minutes.
"Was all of this a dream?" Ekko whispered.
He opened his hand. In his palm sat the fingernail-sized crystal, whole and unburnt. He had rewritten the last five minutes of history. He had achieved the Z-Drive.
Ekko looked at the Professor, a wide, triumphant grin breaking across his face. "Chen was right, Professor. We just found our sword."
