Angelina couldn't move.
Her own whimper echoed through the hallway.
But she wasn't making the sound.
It was coming from somewhere behind her.
The shadow between Mara and the Listener stretched across the floor.
Slowly.
Quietly.
Until it reached Angelina's feet.
She stepped backward.
The shadow stopped.
Mara raised one hand.
"Don't move."
Angelina froze.
The Listener stood completely still.
For the first time, it wasn't looking at Angelina.
It was looking at the shadow.
Mara whispered:
"It's awake."
Angelina swallowed.
"What is it?"
Mara didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she looked at the walls.
The drawings had begun disappearing one by one.
Then Mara finally whispered:
"It has no name."
The shadow shifted.
"And that's why it can't be controlled."
A cold breeze passed through the hallway.
Angelina's reflection appeared in every picture frame around her.
But none of the reflections were moving with her.
They were all staring at the shadow.
Then one reflection smiled.
Angelina's heart dropped.
The reflection lifted its finger and pointed toward Mara.
A message appeared across the wall.
SHE KNOWS.
Angelina looked at Mara.
"What do you know?"
Mara's face changed.
She looked guilty.
"I know how this started."
The Listener moved.
Mara immediately stepped backward.
Angelina stared at her.
"Tell me."
Mara shook her head.
"If I tell you, it will hear."
The shadow suddenly grew taller.
The walls began whispering.
Not one voice.
Hundreds.
All repeating the same words:
Tell her.
Tell her.
Tell her.
Mara covered her ears.
"It wants me to speak."
Angelina's heart raced.
The Listener finally turned toward Mara.
Its hollow face seemed darker than before.
Then it spoke:
"You promised."
Mara looked terrified.
Angelina stared between them.
"Promised what?"
Mara's eyes filled with fear.
"That I would never tell anyone."
The shadow moved closer.
"But I broke that promise when I warned you."
Angelina's breath caught.
Mara looked directly at her.
"The Whimpering Girl isn't one girl."
Angelina stared at her.
"What?"
Mara whispered:
"There have been many."
The hallway fell silent.
Mara continued.
"Every person who became trapped here eventually became part of the whimper."
Angelina looked around.
The doors.
The drawings.
The endless hallway.
Suddenly, everything made sense.
The voices weren't coming from one girl.
They were coming from everyone who had ever been trapped.
Mara was only the latest one.
And now Angelina had heard them too.
Mara reached toward her.
"That's why you must leave."
Angelina shook her head.
"But how?"
Mara looked toward the far end of the hallway.
A tiny door had appeared there.
Unlike the others, it was covered in sunlight.
"The first door."
Angelina stared at it.
"The first?"
Mara nodded.
"The door that started everything."
Behind them, the Listener took a step forward.
The floor trembled.
Mara grabbed Angelina's hand.
"Run."
They raced down the hallway.
Behind them, the shadow followed.
The doors began slamming open.
Voices cried out.
The lights flickered.
Angelina could hear the Listener approaching.
Closer.
Closer.
They reached the small door.
Mara pushed it open.
Bright light flooded the hallway.
Angelina stepped through—
and suddenly stopped.
On the other side was her house.
But it wasn't her house from today.
It was her house from years ago.
A little girl sat on the floor in the living room.
She was holding a small toy.
Angelina stared at her.
She knew that face.
It was Mara.
But Mara looked alive.
A woman stood nearby.
Angelina recognized her immediately.
Her grandmother.
Young.
Terrified.
And standing between them was the shadow.
Angelina's heart pounded.
She had finally found the beginning.
But then young Mara looked directly at her.
Her eyes widened.
And she whispered:
"You're too late."
The door slammed shut behind Angelina.
Mara was gone.
The Listener was gone.
Angelina was alone.
And young Mara slowly stood up.
Then she pointed toward the kitchen.
Someone was crying inside.
Angelina heard the familiar sound.
A soft, broken whimper.
But this time...
it wasn't Mara.
