Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: The Morning After… and the Dog Who Is Not a Dog

Warm sunlight slid through the broken window like an uninvited guest.

Bai Lingling sat straight up with a gasp so violent she nearly headbutted her own soul out of her body.

Her face turned red instantly. Her heart was beating too fast. Her fingers trembled slightly as she pressed them against her cheeks.

What… what was THAT dream?

Her lashes fluttered wildly.

"Calm down… calm down… you are a dignified snake demon… calm down…" she whispered to herself, though her soul clearly ran ten laps around the courtyard in panic.

She pressed her palms over her burning cheeks.

Her mind replayed the warmth of that man's hand on her waist, his voice brushing against her ear, his breath, his—

"AHHHH!" Bai Lingling grabbed her pillow and screamed directly into it like a dying goose. "WHO WAS THAT?!"

She looked around frantically.

Only her "pet" lay curled up nearby on the floor, breathing deeply, tail lazily swaying in his sleep. Absolutely no regard for her emotional collapse.
