Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 8

Chapter 8: Silent Harvest

Li Chen stood among the herbs longer than he should have.

The faint fragrance drifting through the Azure Cloud Sect's herb garden was gentle, almost soothing—sweet and clean, like dew-kissed leaves under morning sunlight. It clung to his robes, seeped into his lungs, and for a fleeting moment, dulled the soreness still lingering in his bones.

He stared at the empty spot where the herb had once been.

Gone.

Absorbed.

Converted into strength.

"…So it wasn't a hallucination," Li Chen murmured under his breath.

"Oh please," the system scoffed lazily inside his mind. "If this were a hallucination, it would be far more flattering to you. Less dirt. More dignity."

Li Chen ignored the jab, eyes sharp as he scanned the surrounding plots. Rows upon rows of herbs stretched across the gentle slopes—some common and dull, others shimmering faintly with Qi-rich vitality. Outer disciples moved about the garden in scattered groups, heads lowered, baskets hanging from their arms as they harvested obediently.

They were careful. Methodical. Afraid.

Li Chen, however, felt something else stirring in his chest.

Opportunity.

If absorbing a single low-grade herb could grant him ten experience points…

His fingers curled slowly.

Then why should I sell my future for a few miserable coins?

A plan formed—quick, ruthless, efficient.

"I'll absorb the good ones," Li Chen thought calmly, "and submit only the scraps."

The system fell silent for a heartbeat.

Then—

"Well, well," it said, voice tinged with mock approval. "Look at that. The brain finally decided to participate. I was beginning to think it was decorative."

Li Chen's lips twitched faintly.

He crouched, pretending to inspect a patch of pale green herbs while subtly placing his palm against a leaf veined with faint Qi.

Ding.

His breath hitched.

He didn't hesitate again.

A small cluster of jade-tinted berries clung to a vine nearby, their surfaces faintly glossy.

Li Chen's heart pounded, but his face remained calm. He reached for another fruit, darker this time, its surface rough and unremarkable.

A sharp sensation rippled through his body.

Level Up!

A warm surge coursed through his limbs, subtle but unmistakable. His breathing steadied. His muscles felt denser—coiled tighter beneath his skin.

A translucent panel bloomed before his eyes.

Li Chen's pulse spiked.

A speed-based combat skill.

For the first time since entering the sect, genuine excitement surged through him—hot, electric, dangerous.

"System," he thought carefully, "this skill—"

"Oh no," the system cut in dryly. "Don't finish that sentence with something embarrassing like thank you. Control yourself. You look like a child who's just discovered fire."

Li Chen clenched his jaw, forcing his expression back into neutrality.

He noticed it then.

The calm.

Normally, he would have been grinning like an idiot—or panicking. Instead, his emotions felt… organized. Controlled.

Is this because of the system? he wondered.

Then he shook his head subtly. No. Focus.

He glanced around. Other disciples were still busy harvesting, unaware of what he was doing just a few steps away.

Testing the skill here would be suicidal.

"Wise decision," the system said smugly, as if reading his thoughts. "Restraint. Rare. Unexpected. Almost admirable."

Li Chen moved deeper into the garden.

The herbs here were denser, richer. Qi lingered in the air like mist, brushing against his senses.

A quiet thrill spread through him.

Level three.

In a single morning.

If I keep this up…

He reached toward another low-grade fruit—

WARNING.

---

Low-Level Herbs are no longer effective for the user.

---

Li Chen froze.

"…What?"

The system sighed theatrically. "And there it is. The end of your brilliant 'infinite experience farming' theory. Growth requires challenge, not scavenging."

Li Chen's mood plummeted. "You couldn't have warned me earlier?"

"And deprive myself of witnessing your disappointment? Unthinkable."

He exhaled sharply, irritation bubbling—but it didn't last long.

Because reality hit him a second later.

"…I still need to submit herbs."

His eyes widened slightly.

If he turned in an empty basket, questions would follow. Accusations. Punishment.

He mentally slapped himself.

"Idiot."

The system chuckled. "At least you're self-aware."

Li Chen straightened, finally beginning to harvest properly—selecting common, low-quality herbs, placing them carefully into his basket.

As he worked, his mind raced.

Power hidden.

Resources secured.

Timing controlled.

Around him, the garden rustled peacefully.

No one noticed the quiet shift that had occurred.

No one realized that the weakest outer disciple had just taken his first real step forward.

And Li Chen, face calm and eyes clear, continued harvesting—already planning his next move.
