Chapter 42 - Chapter- 42: Central City

The train ride itself was surprisingly smooth, though far from quiet. As the urban landscape of New York faded into rolling green countryside and suburbs, the rhythmic clack-clack of the tracks provided a steady backdrop to the chaos unfolding inside their compartment.

Spud spent the first hour passionately detailing his elaborate theories regarding subterranean mole-people living beneath the state borders, complete with hand-drawn diagrams scrawled furiously onto a greasy paper napkin.

Meanwhile, Trixie sat with her headphones resting around her neck, rhythmically tapping her foot while quizzing Haley on track numbers, hidden features, and chorus lyrics from Shaniqua's latest platinum-selling album.

Yet, their passenger car was far from an isolated bubble. It was packed to the absolute brim with excited, loud, and energetic concertgoers. The train was effectively a moving pre-show party.

Fans wore oversized early-2000s hip-hop gear, neon-pink Shaniqua t-shirts, and custom leather jackets bearing her iconic stylized logo in bold silver thread. Interspersed among the music lovers were clear locals from Central City returning home, easily recognizable by their crimson caps, scarlet hoodies, and shirts bearing the iconic yellow lightning-bolt insignia of the Scarlet Speedster.

It seemed like the entire tri-state area was traveling toward the exact same destination.

After a few hours of rapid travel, the train's high-tech magnetic brakes engaged with a soft, satisfying hiss. The automated overhead chime sounded, followed by a crisp, polite voice echoing over the speakers:

"Now arriving at Central City Union Station. Please check for all personal belongings. Thank you very much."

"Finally!" Spud declared, popping his knuckles and rolling his shoulders. "My legs were starting to fuse to the upholstery. I think my left foot went completely off to another dimension."

The doors slid open with a pneumatic swoosh, releasing a tidal wave of fans onto the platform. The moment Jake, Haley, Trixie, and Spud stepped off the train and navigated through the grand terminal, crossing the massive archway into the open air of the city streets, all four of them stopped dead in their tracks.

Their mouths collectively fell open.

The contrast between their hometown and this new metropolis was immediate, stark, and utterly jarring. Calling it a cultural shock would be a massive understatement.

Unlike the gritty, chaotic, traffic-choked, and trash-strewn streets of New York City, Central City was strikingly, almost unnaturally clean. The modern glass-and-steel skyscrapers caught the bright mid-day sun, reflecting light like polished diamonds against a clear blue sky. The sidewalks were wide, pristine, and crafted from smooth light-gray concrete, completely free of the usual dark gum stains or mysterious puddles. Even the air smelled remarkably crisp and fresh—almost entirely devoid of heavy diesel smog, hot asphalt fumes, or stale street food exhaust.

Of course they had seen flashes of the city in phone videos and televised news clips. But experiencing it in person was a whole different language.

"Woah," Spud muttered, pushing his beanie back up his forehead as he rotated in a slow circle, staring upward until his neck cracked. "Where's all the trash? Where are the alley rats? Where's the guy screaming at a mailbox? This place feels like a giant, budget-heavy sci-fi movie set."

"No kidding," Jake agreed, taking a deep breath and looking around at the gleaming architecture. "New York's got its own rugged charm, no doubt... but Central City feels like an entirely different planet."

"And why is it so... shiny?" Trixie added, squinting at a perfectly polished bus stop shelter that reflected her reflection like a pristine mirror. "I feel like if I drop a single potato chip on the ground here, a robot's gonna burst out of the wall and fine me twenty bucks on the spot."

The local authorities, city council, and event organizers had clearly gone all out for the big weekend. Massive vinyl banners featuring Shaniqua's fierce, glamorous portrait dangled gracefully from light posts, skybridges, and overpasses.

High-definition digital billboards mounted on the sides of skyscrapers flickered with live countdown timers ticking down to the exact minute the concert doors would open. Giant, high-fidelity wireless speakers mounted along the pedestrian walkways pumped out low, rhythmic basslines and smooth synth loops, setting an infectious energy throughout the downtown core.

Everywhere you looked, street vendors operating sleek, regulated silver carts were selling glowing LED wristbands, commemorative posters, limited-edition vinyl, and bright red Flash-themed energy drinks packed in bolt-shaped cans. The entire city was vibrating with a rare, electric, and utterly contagious anticipation.

"Look! Look at the banner!" Haley squealed, hopping up and down on her toes and pointing toward a massive holographic display hanging over the main avenue. The projection flickered rhythmically between Shaniqua's face and a glowing yellow lightning bolt. "We're actually here! We're really in Central City!"

Jake draped a protective arm over his sister's shoulder, a confident, genuine smile spreading across his face as he adjusted the collar of his jacket.

"Yeah, squirt," Jake said, looking down the booming, energy-packed street with a spark in his eyes. "We're finally here. Now let's go find this concert—and maybe, if we're lucky, that super-speed superhero too."

*************

While the gang was busy adjusting to the sudden culture shock and taking in the bright sights of the downtown avenue, they were completely unaware that they were being watched from the shadows.

Diente stood tucked just inside a narrow, shaded alleyway between two polished towers. Dressed in his formal clothing—a sharply tailored yet unsettling suit—he fixated on the group. His gleaming, predatory eyes locked specifically onto Haley, widening with an unhinged satisfaction, as if he had finally uncovered a legendary treasure he had been hunting his entire life.

"There you are, my precious... hehehehe," Diente purred beneath his breath. The wet, gravelly giggles echoed softly off the brick walls in a tone so deeply unsettling it would make even a pedophile shiver.

Even the small pixies hovering nervously behind his shoulders turned to look at him with visible disgust and a collective grimace, their glowing wings fluttering with anxious energy.

Diente snapped out of his trance and spun around toward the hovering creatures, his eerie grin vanishing as his face hardened into a bitter, menacing scowl.

"Alright, you pesky, non-profitable wenches. Here is what you will be doing," Diente growled, his voice laced with venomous irritation. "You will use those powers of yours to lure that little runt over here..." He gestured sharply with a gloved thumb back toward Haley. "...and then I will capture her and extract that tooth once and for all. And make sure that bigger dragon doesn't get a single hint of your presence, or so help me, I will clip your wings right off your backs. Do you understand?"

The pixies hovered in place, exchanging desperate, hesitant glances. They shifted back and forth in the air, clearly shrinking away from the task. They detested these kinds of wicked jobs, their small faces filled with reluctance.

"Oh? Showing resistance again? Unbelievable." Diente shrugged with mock disappointment, slipping his hand into his inner jacket pocket and pulling out a slender, ornate wand.

This wand had once belonged to the Tooth Fairy—the previous master of the pixies, who had been unfailingly kind, gentle, and caring toward them. She had never once raised her voice, let alone used her magic against her loyal companions.

But Diente had ambushed her, stripping her of her authority. Now, that once-pure wand was thoroughly corrupted, pulsing with dark, jagged magic. It was the very same artifact Diente was currently using to conceal his dark aura and hide from Jake's sharp dragon senses.

The moment Diente channelled his cruel intent through the corrupted wood, dark ethereal slave collars materialized out of thin air around the pixies' necks. Jagged strands of dark magic ignited, shocking the tiny creatures with bursts of dark lightning.

The pixies shrieked in unison, their small bodies twisting as they tumbled out of the air and hit the pavement, writhing in pain and anguish. They raised their tiny hands, pleading desperately in their high-pitched, melodic voices for him to stop the torturous shock.

"What's that? You want me to raise the voltage?" Diente taunted. He cupped a hand over his ear with a twisted smirk, pretending he couldn't hear them over their cries. "If you insist!"

With a sharp flick of his wrist, he amplified the dark spell. The black lightning flared brighter, crackling aggressively as the pixies wept on the cold stone. This merciless torment continued for several long seconds until Diente finally lowered the wand, thoroughly satisfied with their submission.

"Now... make sure you know your place and do my bidding without another word. Is that clear?" he demanded coldly.

The trembling pixies pushed themselves up off the ground, nodding their heads frantically and painfully, their spirits completely crushed.

"Good." Diente nodded, admiring his own handiwork before sliding the wand back into his suit. He turned back toward the busy street, his grin returning—only for his jaw to drop instantly.

The sidewalk where the kids had been standing just moments ago was completely empty. The bustling crowd of music fans and locals had swallowed them up, leaving no trace of the group.

"Oh, butter biscuits! Look at what you've done!" Diente snarled, wheeling around to glare at the cowering pixies and placing the blame entirely on them. "I lost sight of my precious because of your pathetic little performance!"

The pixies flinched, curling into tight balls to shield themselves from another attack. But Diente merely huffed, adjusting his collar and smoothing down his formal coat.

"No matter. No worries at all," he giggled again, the low, wet sound bubbling up from his throat as a wide, unnerving grin spread from ear to ear across his face. "I will have her... hehehehe."

With a swirl of dark energy, he slipped back into the shadows of the alley, vanishing without a sound to stalk his target.
