Chapter 92 - The White Peacocks, The Golden Jubilee, and The King's Proposal

The Golden Jubilee of the Sun-Throne was not a celebration; it was a financial hemorrhage disguised as a party.

For three days, Kaia watched in a state of suspended disbelief as the Emperor's vanity projects consumed the palace. Three tons of gold leaf were applied to the architectural moldings of the Grand Ballroom. A literal river of expensive champagne flowed from a newly constructed, tiered crystal fountain.

And then, there were the peacocks.

Fifty thousand white peacocks had been imported from the Eastern Isles. They roamed the gardens, the terraces, and occasionally the hallways, screeching at all hours of the day and night.

"They are aggressive," Prince Beckett noted, side-stepping a particularly territorial bird that had taken up residence on the main staircase. "One of them tried to eat my shoelaces this morning."
