….

It was almost 1:00 PM. I scanned the crowd, wondering if she was actually going to show, when I spotted a flash of blue hair.

Kalawarner, or "Hikari," as she had introduced herself, was walking toward me.

She was wearing a beautiful, knee-length white dress that flowed perfectly with her steps, paired with a light cardigan.

Her disguise was flawless. She looked stunning, a soft, nervous smile playing on her lips.

My heart actually skipped a beat. If I didn't know for a fact that she was a Fallen Angel planning to run me through with a spear of light, I would have been completely captivated.

It's a shame, I thought. I really would have loved to get to know her normally.

"I'm so sorry for making you wait," she said, giving a small, apologetic bow as she reached me.

"No, it's alright," I said, putting on my best, most genuine smile. "I just got here a few minutes ago myself."

She smiled back, a little of the tension leaving her shoulders.

"Well," I said, holding my hand out to her. "I think it's about time we have that date I promised."

For the next four hours, I actually had the most fun I'd had all week. It was surreal. Even knowing she was an enemy, the date was genuinely great.

We started at the bowling alley. I figured my boosted stats would give me an edge, but to my absolute shock, Hikari completely destroyed me.

She won three games straight, beating me by over 50 points each time. She actually giggled at my frustrated expression, looking surprisingly cute doing it.

After that, we headed to the theater. Now, standard dating logic says you pick a horror thriller so the girl gets scared and clings to your arm.

But this was a Fallen Angel. She had probably seen centuries of actual horrors; a guy in a rubber mask wasn't going to make her flinch.

Instead, I bought tickets for a high-octane action movie. And to my surprise, she was totally engrossed in it.

She didn't just watch it; she geeks out over it.

She whispered to me during the movie, pointing out specific camera angles and guessing where the real-world filming locations were. I never would have pegged Kalawarner as a film buff.

Following the movie, we did some window shopping. I bought her a few small accessories she liked, and when we finally stopped for an early dinner, I pulled out the small velvet box.

I handed her the silver necklace I'd forged. Her cyan eyes went wide. She traced the metal with her fingers, looking genuinely touched.

"It's beautiful," she murmured.

I helped her put it on, and over dinner, we just talked. We talked about hobbies, likes, dislikes. I learned she loved painting just as much as movies.

For a couple of hours, the supernatural world didn't exist. She wasn't Kalawarner the Fallen Angel, and I wasn't Shiro the Gamer.

But as the sun started to set, reality crept back in.

We took a walk through the local park, eventually ending up in a secluded area near an empty skate park, surrounded by tall trees. The ambient noise of the city faded away. The lighting was dim.

Alright, get ready, my mind whispered. She's going to make her move any second now.

I stopped walking and turned to her, keeping up my cheerful facade. But when I looked at her, she didn't look like a killer preparing to strike.

She looked entirely depressed. Her shoulders were slumped, and her fingers were anxiously playing with the silver necklace I'd given her.

"Hey," I said, letting the fake smile drop just a fraction. I reached out and gently held her hand. "Is everything alright?"

She stopped and looked away, refusing to meet my eyes. She seemed genuinely upset, her voice trembling slightly.

"No," Hikari whispered. "The date was great. It was wonderful, really. I'm just... I'm not ready for this part."

I played dumb, tilting my head in confusion. She took a step back, pulling her hand from mine and looking down at the concrete.

"I'm sorry," she said, her voice tightening with regret. "But I need to…"

Warning: Two targets detected behind you. Hostility level: Lethal.

My spine went ice cold. My Gamer's Mind instantly suppressed my panic, shifting my brain into combat mode. I didn't even think.

I lunged forward, grabbing Hikari by the waist and throwing us both hard to the side.

A split second later, a brilliant, crackling spear of yellow light shot through the exact space my chest had just occupied, missing us by inches and scorching the pavement.

We both spun around.

Hovering just a few feet above us was a man with pitch-black, feathered wings protruding from his back.

He was dressed like a trench-coat inspector, complete with a fedora casting a shadow over his face.

Leaning against a nearby tree was another guy, a human with red hair, casually tossing a short sword up into the air and catching it by the hilt.

Before I could even pretend to act like a panicked civilian, Hikari broke free from my grip. She didn't run away; she ran toward them.

"What are you idiots doing here?" she snapped, glaring up at the floating man. "I was going to do it! You just ruined the timing!"

I quickly focused my eyes, triggering my skill.

….

Level 24 and 17, I noted internally. Their physical stats are way lower than mine.

"You were supposed to kill him three hours ago," Dohnaseek sneered, his voice dripping with condescension.

"When you didn't return to the hideout, we decided to track you down. And lo and behold, you still haven't finished the job."

Hikari gritted her teeth. A pulse of magical energy washed over her, and her disguise melted away.

Her white dress and cardigan shredded into black feathers, instantly replaced by her true attire, a highly revealing, burgundy-and-black outfit that left very little to the imagination.

Her own pair of black wings erupted from her back.

She looked dangerous. But honestly? My high stats didn't do anything to filter my mouth.

"How can something so deadly be so beautiful?" I murmured.

I hadn't meant to say it out loud.
