Chapter 42 - Careful Distance

Day One Six Days Until Freedom

Footsteps echoed as I spotted him near the door of Professor Carter's room. The hall was quiet except for the hum of lockers closing down the stretch.

Facing away, Daniel spoke with someone from the department, yet those shoulders - impossible to mistake. I knew every line. My hands had followed each one that evening inside his place.

My eyes turned aside, stiff with effort. Moving forward, I passed close but said nothing.

Every bit of me was used up.

A vibration came through later. It was that secure messaging tool we got right after speaking with the dean.

Daniel: "Saw you today. Blue sweater. You looked beautiful."

Me: "You're not supposed to be looking."

Daniel: "Try not breathing. It's about as easy."

Me: "Six days."

Daniel: "Five days, twenty-three hours, forty-seven minutes. But who's counting?"

Day 2 Five Days Left

Up I looked. Stares came my way. My answer hung there while Professor Carter waited.
