Chapter 1 - The fracture of origin

Chapter 1: The Discovery

The sun barely filtered through the grey clouds blanketing the village of Rivenwood as Liam climbed into the dusty attic of his grandfather's old house. Every floorboard creaked beneath his feet, as if the house itself were whispering warnings. He ignored the murmurs of the wood, however, and headed toward an old wooden chest that hadn't been opened in years. The dust stirred by the touch of his fingers formed tiny clouds that shimmered in the first rays of sunlight peeking through a broken window.

"Investigating old junk again, Liam?" asked Kael, who had followed him up and was now leaning against the ladder. His voice was a mix of curiosity and exasperation.

Liam looked up and smiled with that spark that always seemed to get him into trouble.

"It's not 'old junk,' Kael. This is history... real history."

Kael rolled his eyes, just as he did every time Liam spoke of his "heroic investigations."

"Right, history that ends in dust and cobwebs," he replied, slowly stepping closer to peer inside the box.

Liam pulled the lid back with a groan of wood. Inside, amidst yellowed papers and strange trinkets, lay an ancient map. It was no ordinary map; the parchment seemed to vibrate softly, as if it possessed a life of its own, and golden lines traced routes and symbols Liam had never seen before.

"Look at this..." Liam whispered, pointing to the symbols that seemed to shift under the sunlight. "Do you see those lines? They aren't just roads. This... this is something else."

Kael tilted his head and frowned.

"It looks... magical. But Liam, couldn't it just be old paint?" he asked cautiously, though the excitement of seeing something extraordinary was reflected in his eyes.

Liam shook his head firmly. His instinct told him this was no mere map. He picked it up carefully, noticing a faint warmth emanating from the parchment.

"It's not paint, Kael... and it's not just any map. This... this could lead us to something no one has seen in centuries."

The air in the attic grew heavy. The floating dust began to move strangely, as if the map were whispering secrets to the wind. Liam traced a line with his finger, and a small golden spark jumped from the parchment, illuminating his eyes with a mysterious flash.

Kael took a step back, startling even Liam.

"That was—!" Kael couldn't finish his sentence, for a soft voice, almost a sigh, seemed to surround them.

"Do not ignore what you find, young seeker..." the voice whispered. Liam spun around sharply toward the shadows of the attic. There was no one there—only the map, glowing faintly.

Liam's heart hammered in his chest, a cocktail of fear and exhilaration. The idea of adventure, which until that moment had felt distant and make-believe, was now right in front of him.

"Kael..." Liam said, his voice barely a thread. "This... this is real."

Kael swallowed hard and stepped toward him, staring at the map with awe and a touch of disbelief.

"If this is what I think it is... then we're about to get into huge trouble."

Liam smiled—that reckless grin that always appeared when he faced the unknown.

"Great adventures require great risks, my friend. Let's see where this takes us."

With a decisive gesture, Liam rolled up the map and tucked it carefully into his backpack. Kael followed him cautiously, trying his best not to show that he was just as intrigued as he was afraid.

The sun had already vanished behind the hills of Rivenwood, and the village was beginning to fall into shadow. But for Liam and Kael, the true adventure was only just beginning.

A slight tremor ran through the house. A draft of cold air blew through the attic, as if the very world within the map were calling out. Liam felt it in his bones: something extraordinary was about to happen. Something that would change his life forever.

And then, just as he was about to head down from the attic, a golden spark rose from the map and formed a small floating point in the air, shining like a beacon. Liam stepped forward, mesmerized.

"It... it can't be..." Kael murmured, his voice a blend of dread and wonder.

The point of light began to drift toward the forest, as if marking a secret path that only they could follow.

"Liam... it's... it's calling to us," Kael said in a hushed voice, unable to look away.

"Then there's no time to waste," Liam replied, tightening the straps of his pack. "Let's go find out what's hiding out there."

The forest beyond Rivenwood had never looked so mysterious, so alive. And as the two friends prepared to step into the unknown, a strange sensation washed over Liam: the map wasn't just showing a path... it seemed to know them, anticipating every step they would take.

And so, with the first spark of magic lighting their way, Liam and Kael took their first step toward a world that no one—not even his grandfather—had ever seen.

The forest of Rivenwood stretched out before them, its dense, whispering shadows enveloping every tree. Each branch creaked in the wind, and the birds seemed to watch the newcomers with invisible eyes. Liam gripped his backpack with the map inside, while Kael moved forward with cautious steps.

—"Are you sure this path is safe?" Kael whispered, barely moving his lips so as not to break the forest's silence.

—"There is no safe path where something extraordinary is happening," Liam replied, with a mixture of determination and excitement that made his heart race.

A faint golden glow appeared among the trees, flickering like a giant firefly. Liam took a step forward and leaned in to follow the light.

—"That… that must be the map," he murmured, pointing to a thread of light that seemed to float in the air, guiding them.

Suddenly, a soft rustle came from behind a nearby bush. Liam spun around quickly, ready to face whatever creature might appear. Kael stared with wide eyes, paralyzed by fear and surprise.

—"Who's there?" Liam asked, trying to make his voice sound steady.

A figure slowly emerged from the bushes. It was a young woman with silver hair that shimmered under the filtered forest light, and green eyes that seemed to hold centuries of secrets. Her dark blue tunic appeared to move with a life of its own, and a golden medallion hung from her neck, glowing with the same light emanating from the map.

—"Do not fear," the girl said in a soft but firm voice. "I know who you are, and I know why you are here."

Kael swallowed hard and took a step back.

—"Who are you?" he asked, his tone full of caution and distrust.

—"My name is Elyra," she replied. "And that map you hold… it is more dangerous than you imagine."

Liam frowned, but he couldn't hide the curiosity consuming him.

—"Dangerous?" he said. "It's just an ancient map… how dangerous can it be?"

Elyra stepped forward and held out her hand, revealing a blue glow in her palm that illuminated the darkness between the trees.

—"That map belongs to the Hidden Kingdom. Many have searched for it, but few have found it, and even fewer have survived. Mordren…" her voice grew grave. "He is searching for it too."

The name sent a shiver down Liam's spine. The sense of adventure was now laced with a deep, instinctive fear.

—"Mordren?" Kael asked, his voice trembling. "Who is he?"

Elyra looked down, as if the mere mention of the name carried too heavy a burden.

—"An ancient mage who was banished from the Kingdom. His ambition knows no bounds, and he will do anything to seize the power that resides within that map."

Liam exchanged a look with Kael. The excitement and adrenaline he felt were now mingled with a newfound responsibility. They couldn't simply run away; the map had chosen them, and something inside told him the Hidden Kingdom depended on their choices.

—"So… what should we do?" Liam asked, adjusting his pack.

Elyra watched them intensely, weighing their expressions. Finally, she took a deep breath and said:

—"First, you must learn the rules of the Realm. Every creature, every shadow, and every whisper can be a test. And more importantly… you must learn to trust each other, because Mordren feeds on doubt and betrayal."

A soft wind swept through the forest, making the leaves rustle as if the woods themselves were confirming Elyra's words.

—"We have no time to waste," she continued. "If we follow the map, it will lead us to a portal that appears only under the light of the full moon. Tonight will be our first test."

Kael swallowed, looking at Liam with a mix of fear and exhilaration.

—"Well… I guess there's no turning back, right?" he said, trying to force a smile.

Liam nodded. His heart was pounding, but his resolve was clear.

—"Let's go, then. This is our adventure. And I trust that we can face whatever comes… together."

Elyra smiled faintly, a spark of hope in her eyes.

—"Then prepare yourselves. Because what you are going to see tonight… will change your lives forever."

And as the sun vanished completely behind the hills, the three of them moved deeper into the forest, following the flickering golden light that guided their way toward the mystery waiting for them.

The forest air grew colder as the sun vanished completely behind the hills. The shadows of the trees lengthened, and the map's golden light flickered like a beacon, pointing the way toward a clearing that seemed to glow with an ethereal radiance.

—"I've never seen anything like this," Kael whispered, his eyes wide as saucers. "This forest… it doesn't feel natural."

—"It is part of the Realm," Elyra replied, moving forward with steady steps. "Here, everything has intent. Every leaf, every shadow, every whisper is part of a trial."

Liam looked around, feeling a mixture of wonder and tension. Excitement pushed him forward, but a part of him remained alert, aware that any false step could be dangerous.

Suddenly, a whisper rose from between the trees, as if the breeze itself were speaking. Liam stepped back, and Kael tripped over a root. The map's golden light shifted restlessly, pointing to the right, guiding them away from a path that now seemed… wrong.

—"Follow the light," Elyra commanded. "But be careful; the forest does not always reveal everything at once."

The group moved forward with caution. Each step made the dry leaves crunch beneath their feet, echoing through the silence. The trees seemed to close in around them, as if they wanted to protect the path they were taking.

—"What kind of trials?" Liam asked, unable to contain his curiosity.

—"All kinds," Elyra replied. "Some measure courage, others cleverness, and others… the heart. If you doubt yourselves, the forest will find a way to show you what you fear to face."

As they walked, the map's light came to a halt in front of a circle of stones covered in glowing runes. The atmosphere grew denser, and Liam could feel a prickle on the back of his neck, as if someone were watching them.

—"This… this looks like some kind of barrier," Kael murmured, approaching slowly.

Elyra extended her hands and muttered words Liam didn't understand, while a soft blue light emerged from her palms. The runes began to glow intensely, and the ground trembled slightly beneath their feet.

—"A test of faith and courage," Elyra said. "To cross, you must trust in yourselves and in each other. I cannot protect you from what this circle decides to reveal."

Liam took a deep breath. Kael looked at him, nervous.

—"Well… I guess this is what we call 'adventure,'" Liam said with a reckless smile, though his heart was pounding.

Elyra nodded and pointed to a path that seemed to open up beyond the circle.

—"If you hesitate, the forest will stop you. Keep your minds clear and your hearts strong."

With measured steps, Liam moved first, followed by Kael and then Elyra. As he stepped on the first symbol of the circle, a golden radiance enveloped them, and the forest seemed to breathe around them.

A rising murmur filled the air, and dancing shadows began to form strange figures among the trees. Liam felt a chill run down his spine.

—"What… what are those things?" Kael asked, his voice trembling.

—"Manifestations of fear," Elyra replied. "Only those who accept their doubts and face their fears can move forward."

The shadows began to move faster, taking the shapes of humans, animals, and beasts Liam had never seen. Some seemed harmless; others, dangerously close.

—"Stay calm!" Liam shouted, grabbing Kael's hand as they pushed forward. "We can't turn back."

The map's light flashed with more intensity, illuminating a safe path through the closing shadows. Every step became a challenge: they were not just facing creatures and forest shapes, but also their own internal fears, reflected in those shifting shadows.

Elyra walked with serenity, murmuring incantations that kept the more aggressive manifestations at bay.

—"Trust yourselves," she told them. "Do not let your doubts control you."

A deep roar echoed through the air, shaking the tree branches and causing Kael to stumble. Liam pulled him up quickly while the shadows temporarily retreated, as if waiting for them to prove their courage.

—"Together!" Liam shouted, taking the lead. "We won't let anything stop us."

As they moved toward the other side of the runic circle, Liam could feel that every step brought them closer to the heart of the Hidden Kingdom, where secrets, magic, and true challenges awaited.

The forest fell into an unsettling silence. Glowing eyes within the shadows seemed to move with intelligence, watching every step they took. Liam pressed the backpack against his chest, while Kael couldn't stop looking in every direction, fearing every crunch of the dry leaves beneath his feet.

—"That thing... it's following us," Kael whispered, barely audible. "I'm sorry, but I don't like this at all."

Elyra stepped forward, her gaze fixed on the glowing eyes. A blue aura emanated from her hands, partially illuminating the path.

—"It is no ordinary creature," she said. "It is a guardian of the forest. It will only attack if it senses fear or a lack of trust."

—"Then we must stand firm," Liam replied, taking a deep breath and trying to calm his racing heart.

As they moved forward, the eyes seemed to multiply, forming increasingly defined figures: humanoid silhouettes moving between the trees, barely visible in the gloom. Each shadow seemed to measure their pace, weighing their courage and determination.

Suddenly, a figure leaped between them, quick and agile, forcing Kael to recoil. Liam reacted instinctively, steadying his friend and taking the lead.

—"Stay calm!" Liam shouted. "We can't let them intimidate us."

Elyra muttered a spell, and the blue light from her hands intensified, creating a protective circle around them. The shadows retreated slightly, but the eyes watching them remained fixed, full of curiosity and threat.

—"This forest tests both the mind and the heart," Elyra explained. "The creatures here are not enemies unless we give them reason to be."

Kael swallowed hard and looked at Liam with anxiety.

—"So... we just keep moving and hope they don't attack?" he asked.

—"Exactly," Elyra said. "But remember: every fear you face is reflected here. If you doubt yourselves or each other, the forest will know."

Liam spat through gritted teeth and took the lead again, guiding Kael and Elyra along a barely lit trail. Each shadow seemed to try and block their path, moving like shifting, elusive currents of water.

Suddenly, an earth-shattering roar shook the forest, followed by a tremor in the ground. Kael stumbled, but Liam quickly hauled him up. Elyra raised her hands, and an expanding wave of blue light swept through the woods, temporarily driving back the shadows.

—"That was close!" Kael exclaimed, breathing heavily. "This is... too intense."

—"It is only the beginning," Elyra said serenely. "You must learn to trust yourselves. If you show fear or distrust, the guardian will perceive it."

Liam looked at Kael and then at Elyra. He could feel that their decisions affected not only their safety but also the outcome of the trial the forest was imposing on them.

—"Then..." he said with a firm voice. "We must stay together and face this. Together."

As he spoke, he felt the golden light of the map intensify, pointing toward a clearing further ahead. The glowing eyes drew closer, but not with the intent to attack; rather, it was as if they were evaluating whether the three were ready to continue.

—"There it is," Elyra whispered. "The first true step toward the Kingdom. Beyond that clearing, the next part of the map—and your destiny—will be revealed."

A cold wind swept through the forest, kicking up leaves and causing the shadows to flicker as if the woods themselves were breathing. Liam felt a mixture of dread and excitement. For the first time, he understood that the adventure wasn't just about what they would find, but about who they would become while facing the unknown.

A shadow larger and more imposing than the rest separates from the group and slowly approaches them, with eyes that glow like fire and movements that are silent yet lethal...

The heart of the forest was shrouded in gloom, and the giant shadow watching them finally emerged from the dark mantle of the trees. Its size was imposing, and its eyes burned with an intense fire that reflected not only power, but intelligence and malice. Liam, Kael, and Elyra stood still, paralyzed by the creature's magnitude.

—"Stay together," Elyra commanded, her voice firm and resonant, even though her own heart was racing. "We cannot show fear."

The shadow advanced silently, and every step made the ground seem to vibrate beneath them. Kael gripped Liam's hand tightly, his teeth clenched, as they tried to maintain their composure.

Suddenly, the golden map emitted an intense glow, forming a path that opened between them and the creature. The light seemed to push the shadow back, forcing it to keep its distance.

—"Follow the light!" Liam shouted, leading Kael and Elyra along the illuminated trail.

As they moved forward, the shadows began to multiply, but none dared to cross the barrier of the map's radiance. The giant creature watched them, analyzing every movement, until a deep roar echoed through the entire forest and it vanished among the treetops.

Elyra took a deep breath and lowered her hands slightly, though the blue light still shimmered faintly around them.

—"You have passed the first trial," she whispered, her voice heavy with relief. "The guardian only wanted to measure your courage and your capacity for trust."

Kael let out a long sigh and fell to his knees on the damp forest earth.

—"I've never been so scared in my life!" he exclaimed, though a nervous smile flickered across his face.

—"And yet, we made it," Liam said, looking at him with pride. "This is only the beginning."

Elyra led them to a clearing where the moonlight fell directly upon an ancient stone pedestal covered in runes. Resting atop the pedestal was a glowing blue crystal, which seemed to contain a small whirlwind of light and magic.

—"That crystal," Elyra explained, "is the first key to accessing the Hidden Kingdom. You must touch it together. Only if your hearts and your wills are aligned will the portal open."

Liam and Kael exchanged glances. The fear was still there, but now determination burned more brightly. Holding hands, they moved toward the pedestal. Elyra followed, murmuring ancient words that made the crystal's light vibrate even more intensely.

When the three of them placed their hands on the crystal, a wave of energy enveloped them. Liam felt a warmth surging from his feet to his head, while a soft but powerful voice seemed to resonate in his mind:

—"Brave ones, you have proven your heart. The Kingdom awaits you."

The crystal erupted in a flash of blue and gold light, and before them appeared a shimmering portal, spinning slowly as if time itself were bending around it. The forest fell silent; the giant shadow was gone.

—"We're ready," Liam said, with a mix of excitement and nerves.

Kael nodded, his fear transformed into anticipation.

—"Yeah... let's go discover this Kingdom."

Elyra smiled, for the first time without a trace of dread in her expression.

—"Remember," she said, "this is just the start. Everything you see and face there will test your hearts, your friendship, and your bravery. But I trust that together, you will be capable of overcoming any obstacle."

With one last look at the forest that had tested them, the three friends stepped toward the portal, venturing into the unknown. The light enveloped them completely, and the night of the Hidden Kingdom welcomed them with a brilliant and dangerous mystery that promised even greater adventures.

As they crossed through, the portal's light revealed the silhouette of Mordren watching them from a distance, his dark smile reflecting that the real challenges had only just begun...
