Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: When the Debt Comes Due

Varent did not sleep anymore.

He lay in silk sheets, beneath a ceiling painted with golden victories and divine blessings, yet his eyes never fully closed. Every time he drifted off, the same image returned.

Men kneeling.

Not in prayer.

In silence.

Watching him.

He sat up abruptly, breath shallow.

The room was empty.

No shadows.

No whispers.

Still—

He felt observed.

"Report," Varent said, voice tight.

The hunter stood before him, silent as a statue. The ash-gray cloak didn't move, even when the air shifted.

"The slum network is unstable," the hunter said.

"Primary anchor remains active. Secondary anchor unconfirmed."

Varent clenched his jaw.

"Then kill them both."

"Impossible," the hunter replied.

Varent's head snapped up. "Impossible?"

"The signal has diffused," the hunter explained. "Killing the host now would increase propagation."

Varent's fingers dug into the armrest of his chair.

"Then what do you suggest?"

The hunter tilted its masked face.

"We starve the god."

Varent blinked. "Explain."

"No hosts," the hunter said.

"No growth.

No influence.

No future."

Varent's lips curled into a thin smile.

"Yes," he whispered. "Yes… that's better."

Far beneath the city, Kael staggered.

He dropped to one knee, breath ragged.

The god's presence flickered violently inside him—like a storm trying to stay contained in a glass bottle.

"What's happening?" Kael demanded.

No answer.

"God."

Still nothing.

Panic rose.

"Don't you dare go silent now," Kael growled.

Finally—

"The debt," the god said faintly.

"It's collecting."

Kael's stomach tightened. "From the hunters?"

"No. From me."

Kael frowned. "Explain."

Silence stretched.

Then—

"When I protected you both," the god said slowly,

"I broke a rule."

Kael's expression hardened.

"And now?"

"Now something has to pay the balance."

The system flickered violently.

❝System Alert❞

❝Divine Core Instability Detected❞

❝Growth Reversal in Progress❞

Kael's eyes widened.

"You're losing power?"

"Yes."

Elsewhere, Mirel felt it too.

Her system dimmed slightly, the glow less sharp, less certain.

❝Ledger Efficiency Reduced: 12%❞

She frowned.

"That's new."

The god's voice reached her, distant and strained.

"Don't panic.

It's temporary… I think."

"Not exactly comforting," she muttered.

Kael slammed his fist against the wall.

"There has to be a way to stop it."

"There is."

Kael looked up.

"What is it?"

A long pause.

"A new host."

Kael stared into the darkness.

"You're serious."

"Growth offsets loss," the god replied.

"More anchors. More stability."

Kael clenched his teeth.

"That just makes us louder."

"Yes."

"Hunters will find them faster."

"Yes."

Kael let out a humorless laugh.

"So the only way to survive… is to become more dangerous."

The god didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

In the palace, Varent stood before a map.

Red pins marked slums, tunnels, abandoned districts—places where the signal had appeared.

He picked one.

Then another.

Then another.

"Burn them," he ordered.

The aide hesitated. "My lord… those are civilian zones."

Varent's eyes were empty.

"Exactly."

Hours later, smoke rose across the city.

Not from war.

From cleansing.

Buildings torched.

Tunnels collapsed.

People driven out or dragged away.

Fear spread faster than any signal.

Mirel watched from a rooftop, eyes cold.

"They're not even hiding it anymore."

"Desperation," the god said quietly.

"Power reveals its true face when threatened."

She looked at the flames.

"And us?"

"We do the same."

Kael stood at the edge of a burning district.

Children cried.

Guards pushed people into the streets.

Homes turned to ash behind them.

Kael's hands trembled.

"Varent did this."

"Yes."

Kael's eyes darkened.

"Good."

The god felt the shift.

Cold.

Focused.

Dangerous.

"Why good?" the god asked.

Kael looked at the chaos.

"Because now," he said softly,

"no one will defend him."

The system flared.

❝System Update❞

❝Public Oppression Detected❞

❝Influence Growth Condition Met❞

Kael blinked.

"Read it."

❝New Rule Generated❞

❝Oppression Breeds Signal❞

❝For every act of unjust control, passive influence increases❞

Kael smiled slowly.

"He just fed us."

High above, in a realm of silent watchers—

A god stirred.

Another followed.

"They've begun to notice," one said.

"The fallen one grows again," another whispered.

A third voice, deeper, colder, spoke last.

"Then let him grow," it said.

"So we can see how far he dares to climb."

Back in the burning district, Kael turned away from the flames.

"Find me someone," he said quietly.

"Another host?" the god asked.

Kael nodded.

"Not just anyone," he said.

"Someone the world already gave up on."

The god's presence flickered, then steadied slightly.

"Very well," he said.

"Let's go shopping for despair."

Behind them, the city burned.

Ahead of them—

Another life was about to change.

And somewhere in the chaos, someone on the edge of death was about to see a screen appear in front of their eyes.

The debt wasn't paid.

It had only been delayed.
