There was no way I could convince him to let me go alone. He had already made up his mind, and I knew pushing further would only make things worse. Even though it was not what I wanted, I swallowed my protest and let it be.

Outside the fourth wing dome, the cold wrapped itself around me. I wore a shirt, yet it felt useless. The breeze brushed against my skin, sharp and cruel, making me feel almost naked as we stepped out.

No one had warned me that the weather at the Academy of Sixth changed so much at night.

Ash locked the main door behind us and joined me. "Let's go."

I waited for him to move ahead, but he did not. Instead, he stayed behind me. He wanted to walk there, watching my back, and I hated it more than I wanted to admit.

How was I supposed to get rid of him and do what I came out here to do tonight?
