Chapter 2 - The Visible Part of the Iceberg

Nora

The moment I stepped through the door, I was struck by a huge shock. The ground was filled with rotten apples, pears, and horse manure, and everyone around was in a rush, running about in panic. My family and I were extremely surprised by what we encountered. This campus, which in the school brochure was wonderful—spotlessly clean, full of rainbows and smiling people—now reeked, was in a disgusting filth, and people were extremely angry.

Not wanting to be prejudiced, my family and I asked a pink–transparent-winged fairy for the location of the dormitory, but if the fairy hadn't had wings, they would have called her a devil; the fairy was extremely angry, had completely lost her temper, and her face had gone pale. She must not have been having a good day, and she instantly poured all the anger she had been accumulating for days onto us—and literally so!

We were suddenly covered with a vomit-like substance; it was bright yellow and had particles in it, looking just like mucus. All our fabric bags, clothes, and my suitcase were smeared with this mucus–vomit mixture. No matter how much we tried to clean it, it was useless; in the end, it would require washing.

Without making a fuss, by looking at the signs and the map in the brochure we had, we managed to find the dormitory. A total of 4 people would be staying in the room, and since I was the last to arrive, the bed closest to the door was mine. I placed my belongings with my mother and said goodbye to my family. Although my roommates had placed their things, they were nowhere to be seen, so I decided to tour the campus.

First, I went to the school building. The East wing was for 1st graders; inside there was one medicine and potion-making laboratory, one examination laboratory, and three regular classrooms. The classrooms had wooden interiors and colored glass, one blackboard, and a total of nine double desks arranged in a square-like formation. The teacher's desk was on the side with the window, and behind the teacher's desk there was a cabinet. Behind the desks were student lockers.

The laboratory for potions and magic had a semicircular seating arrangement like in old-style theaters. For each seat, there was a wand, a cauldron, and a spellbook. There were windows behind the student desks. In front of the desks were the teacher's desk, the teacher's cauldron, and their own special wand and spellbook. The materials were in cabinets arranged in a U-shape around the teacher's desk.

In the examination laboratory, there were three different long rectangular tables arranged one after another, and all of them were surrounded by a U-shaped counter. On the counters were cabinets arranged in the same order, and in these cabinets there was every kind of material, element, substance, and equipment you could think of that might be needed for a scientific study.

The West wing was for 2nd and 3rd graders, and 1st graders were not allowed to enter. In the North wing, 4th graders and interns received training; again, lower classes did not have access to this area. In the South wing, there were the cafeteria and the canteen. In the cafeteria, many students could sit at many long tables arranged lengthwise.

Feeling tired, I went to the cafeteria to eat; chicken, salad, and hot soup felt good and warmed me up. After finishing the meal, I returned to the dormitory to both wait for my new roommates and take a hot shower. Finally, my roommates had arrived—I can't wait to meet them.

Lena had come from Thailand, and she might have been the friendliest person I had seen at this school. She had very cute freckles and two distinct dimples, and she was also very helpful. She was tall, her hair was long like herself, and it was brown and very shiny. She had violet-colored eyes, which are very rare in the world.

Elisa was someone who had been my enemy in middle school—blonde, short, thin, and someone who had tormented me for years. She still had the same pathetic grin on her face, as if she were about to cause trouble again at any moment and create a scandal where she would blame me in front of everyone.

Louise, on the other hand, was shy but kind-hearted. She had short hair with bangs, loved reading books, and was a Harry Potter fan. Although she didn't talk much at first, over time she wanted to get to know and bond as well—and she succeeded.

The fact that Elisa was still here and kept giving me the same nasty grin made me very uncomfortable, so just to get out of the room and relax a bit, I went into the shower. The water would heat up and then instantly go cold; taking a shower was really difficult, but I managed it. When I returned to the room, since Elisa was nowhere to be seen, I told Louise and Lena about what I had experienced with Elisa in the past and warned them to be cautious around her. At 23:00, before sleeping, I set an alarm for 06:30 and drifted off to sleep, unaware of what would happen tomorrow.
